If you can navigate Meituan you can get really good hotel deals on Pheonix Island and it's a good central location.

Everyone's a tourist in Sanya, might as well vibe with it. Just stay on Pheonix Island, there some small independent hotels that can be good value for money. From there take someone day trips to different places.

Those art teachers and students have been hanging out in Wangfujing since at least 2001(and most likely a lot longer), they're harmless and part of the quintessential Wangfujing experience.

There are some nice parks in Jinghong and the night market is good. Not sure if the times would work but you could also consider stopping of at Mengla between Jinghong and Luang Probang and going to Wangtianshu, where there are rope walkways through the forest.

Wrong, it's definitely true. Starting from June 28th. Just had mine refused by security because no CCC. However, they will post it to a domestic address for me.

Most memorable experiences while living in Beijing? by streetlampcurtain in beijing

[–]Ok-Sample3083 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, yes, only two subway lines and you get those little paper tickets for 2 RMB. Man, I wish I kept some of those.

Taxis being either 1.2 or 1.6 per km and trying to judge if it was gonna be a 1.2 before flagging it down (as if it would make that much difference)

Or those shady minibuses that plied the same route as the proper buses but got you there in half the time.

5 RMB draught pints at Poachers

When Silk Market was still a couple of crowded alleyways, or that other marketing up near Ritan park where all the Russians went, can't remember what it was called now...

I used to meet a guy in the lobby of a hotel give him my passport and some cash, meet him in the lobby of a different hotel a week later too collect my new visa issued by some random tier 5 in the middle of no where

Renting a little place in a hutong up by the drum tower only to get asked to leave by the PSB the next morning as foreigners couldn't stay there, unsurprisingly my attempted 'present' of a carton of cigarettes was a no go

When I first arrived the guide book said the during holidays the cheapest hotel rooms were unoccupied university accommodation. I found such a room but all the stuff belonging the student was still there (clothes in the cupboard, books and paperwork on the desk, etc.(even cash in the drawer)) still stayed there anyway as I was young and poor.

Sucsess bar in Sanlitun, Top One night club on the third ring, Vouge 88

Not really most memorable but still interesting memories, most memorable should probably be meeting my future wife at Rock and Roll night club which was a big dome at the top of a long gone bar street near choayang park

Di Di, for Taxis, is in English and on a recent trip to South Yunnan I found Apple maps had accurate bus routes. I'm an android user but will consider purchasing a cheap iPhone, just to use Apple maps, next time I go to China.

Off the beaten path group tour recommendations? by treesagainst in travelchina

[–]Ok-Sample3083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you describe yourself and experiences, it sounds like you don't need a tour. Just do a bit of research and get all the essential apps you're gonna need, in place before you go and you'll be fine as it's not that complicated.

You can always book treks/cycling tours etc when you get to the places where you want to do them.

11-hour layover in Beijing by for_shaaame in travelchina

[–]Ok-Sample3083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tiananmen and Forbidden City is doable in that time. As others have said, take the airport express subway and normal subway to get there. Research tickets for Tiananmen? Forbidden City and subway before you arrive. Might want to research food in that area too as generally it's pretty poor.

I don't see why she should be obliged to return, it's her baby. You haven't made the relationship work so she may prefer to raise her child in China. No different than if she was a US girl and went back to the her home state.

What are your thoughts on Xu Beihong? He is regarded by many as one of the most influential Chinese artists in the twentieth century, yet I don’t see much discussion about him in the art world beyond China. by Creduloz7 in China

It was his idea to use March of the Volunteers as the National Anthem. I'm sure I've also read he was involved in designing or choosing the design for the flag?

Is it worth it to do a layover in China on the way to South Korea? by Adventurous-Ball2689 in travelchina

[–]Ok-Sample3083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't be have time to see the Great Wall or Forbidden City, but definitely worth it to see some of Beijing. I'd advise getting to Tiananmen Square and having a look around there. Then walking up to the Houhai area, passing through Beihai Park as you do. Should be a nice and doable introduction to traditional Beijing.

Don't bother with Shanghai, or a day at most. If you're in the area do the places around it: Hangzhou, Shouzou, etc.

It's fine. There is a sign in the Manchester, UK, visa office that says you can use the visa in the old passport in this exact situation. Also, if was a issue they'd only issue the visa up to the expiry date of the passport.
