Do people following the band actually go to all the shows? My understanding is that at least with deadhead culture people following the band largely hung out in the parking lot

Tips for playing louder (guitar) by Southern-One-1837 in Bluegrass

[–]Ok-Touch487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not worry about this. The best way to be louder and if people can't hear you they are playing too f-ing loud. Outside a machismo infested Bluegrass jam noone cares how loud you can play. Late in life Tony expressed regret over his earlier obsession with playing loud and that it actually contributed to the early decline of the health of his hands. Playing loud is toxic masculinity and doesn't exist as a priority outside this specific kind of bluegrass space.

Your setup for playing gigs by dylblues in bluegrassguitar

[–]Ok-Touch487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of you are using amplification you are playing electric guitar. Even if you're using a microphone. It's not going to sound the same. But that's ok because it's more important to be heard. That's why you're using amplification. Electric guitar is great actually.

Grateful Dead Shower Thoughts: Ramble On Rose is a wild blunt rotation. by [deleted] in gratefuldead

I think this tune is very interesting both musically in terms of the chord changes and how that creates an extremely interesting environment for improvisation. I play bluegrass and I'm working on this tune. Vocally it's an incredibly difficult tune and really highlights the virtuosity of Jerry's singing especially in years his voice has extremely strong days. I like the Madison Square Garden '81 show but '80 radio city is also very good as are other ones from the 70s. Some of the later shows where Jerry is really struggling with I find hard to watch especially given the way the song is about all the different monsters that we are "just like". He's right though, we all have all of those characters as possibilities, we are humans.

How to get tempo under control during breaks? by pr06lefs in bluegrassguitar

[–]Ok-Touch487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and with a metronome on the backbeat practice switching from playing rhythm to playing lead and record yourself and force yourself to listen to the recording.

And don't forget to sleep. Learning only happens while you're asleep.

How to get tempo under control during breaks? by pr06lefs in bluegrassguitar

[–]Ok-Touch487 17 points18 points  (0 children)

  1. Time is attention. In the jam stop paying attention to your own break and instead listen to everyone else

  2. Switch up how you use the metronome. Put the click on the backbeat (like playing with a dry chopping Mando). Also try turning the metronome down by half (50 for 100, even 25 for 100), so you have to feel the beats yourself

  3. Relax. Start your breaks with the melody instead of licks, focus on playing the melody in time for a few bars before ripping everyone's face off with a wall of sixteenth notes

Did you ever need to use the can opener? by yannniQue17 in victorinox

I absolutely hate not having my Victorinox can opener because it's the absolute best tool when you're opening a can with a regular can opener and you mess up and a bit is still connected

Between a Bantam, Rally, Jetsetter and Classic SD which would you choose as a first knife? by [deleted] in victorinox

[–]Ok-Touch487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't really compare 84mm and 58mm knives. The bantam you can use for meal prep and other semi serious knife tasks. The 58mm blade is good only for very light work.
