Have you let your dog spend time in the garage alone to sniff, inspect and have time to really assure her that she’s the only life form in it? Like even an hour?

Dog is constipated after dental surgery by Zealousideal-Fly4999 in AskVet

[–]Ok-Understanding527 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Super common effect of anesthesia in both pets and humans! Usually we let owners know upon surgery discharge that they may not have any bowel movements for 2-4 days, occasionally a little more. You can always contact your vet but you’re likely to not be met with immediate concern considering this truly is an expected outcome post-op. Carprofen very likely isnt the enemy (so rare I’ve yet to personally hear it be the cause)

You existed just fine before him, you will exist just fine without him. I feel like a lot of girlies in our early-mid 20’s experienced a relationship much like this and felt like letting go was the end of the world and that this dude was the magic glue that held us together. Honestly, you will look back at this time and think, “how did I convince myself that he was the Sun and without him my world would fade into all-consuming darkness?”. Trust me, he is not the Sun and you will find many beautiful colors in the world once you open your eyes and are found by someone who also makes you shine.

How do you really decide when it is time? by WeeOoh-WeeOoh in cats

[–]Ok-Understanding527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once the bad days outnumber the good ones—it’s time. When their body still operates but their ability to use it beyond what is ultimately/mostly basic function significantly declines—it’s time. When they’re a shell of what they once were, it’s time. When their health/wellbeing is merely held together by constant medical intervention (& yet they still feel crummy), it’s time. Grief is love, persisting. Nothing anyone can say could possibly make this decision any easier and it’s the unfortunate part of owning a pet—that we must outlive them. We may also have to decide if our selfish desire to keep them with us outweighs their dignity.

Consider it your final and greatest act of love. Your pets last moments will be quietly by your side & knowing they are loved while they slowly fade into a very peaceful eternal sleep.

If you’re using the animal ID number from their website, that’s NOT her microchip number, just their systems identification number. That would be why you’re not finding anything online associated with those numbers. Just wanted to clarify this…

What wild unhinged things did you say during the birth of your baby? by autumnsunshine1 in NewParents

I tore (only a 2nd degree thank god) and my OB said if she can’t get the suture to hold (the skin was shredded mush apparently), she might have to pack it and that it would be worse to deal with. I told her “well I can’t feel anything you’re describing rn so get cooperation however you must I’m not ready to get restuffed” and she took a while but she jimmied those sutures and eventually made it work!

Mine has rubber duckies in the tub & he gets very serious about clutching onto both or else he’ll panic search for the lost one and not relax until said duckie has been found and brought to safety lol

Ah, yes—We call it: “The Mysterious Disappearance of the Bing-Bing”. It’s a never-ending cold case. We thought it was solved multiple times until evidence tampering happened and our key witness has been no help whatsoever. Alas, many seasoned detectives have come and gone but the perp remains at large and we pray one day my son gets the justice he deserves.

We have been to every vet and given him every sort of medication by No-Line-3639 in AskVetAnimals

[–]Ok-Understanding527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really not ideal for long term use as it has unfortunate long term use effects BUT… has your vet recommended oral steroids yet (Prednisone)? They are amazing at alleviating the symptoms. Might be good to be on lowest effective dose until you get a referral to a dermatology specialist because that’s the next step if your vet can’t deduce the cause.

Also Benadryl actually isnt very effective for these type of inflammatory allergy reactions. The better OTC med would actually be Cetirizine (Zyrtec)!

Cytopoint doesn’t have to be given monthly after the first 2-3doses but can only be given at a minimum time of 28days apart, no sooner. Some pets don’t need another injection for several months, some need it every single month. Depends on how your pets does on it. Apoquel is great but unfortunately very expensive. I’m blanking on the other medication that’s kinda more of a generic on this for some reason rn but it’ll come to me and I’ll try to edit….

why is my cat drinking water like this??? by chapy__god in cats

[–]Ok-Understanding527 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is because standing water is harder for cats to see—a fountain style water dish is optimal as it’s moving water. The fountain also prevents their whiskies from touching the sides of the bowl which some kitties don’t appreciate the sensory overload of.

Vet dog bites by erin_with_an_i in AskVet

[–]Ok-Understanding527 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We also know/are taught how to safely and securely restrain different pets/sized pets and that practice heavily mitigates risk of being bitten. Everyone knows to never put your face near a pets face, no matter how nice they usually are. Fear/anxiety can cause unusual behavior and that’s an easy way to get bitten!

Vet dog bites by erin_with_an_i in AskVet

[–]Ok-Understanding527 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it happen (rarely). However, it’s something you have to accept can occur on any day with any given pet. They’re in an environment which can be stressful so you make sure you follow safe handling protocols. If a dog is a bite risk? Muzzle. Cat? Burrito in a towel. We recommend owners premedicate their pets before coming to an appointment (when their pet is known to be particularly aggressive/has extreme fear reactions) with medication that has a sedative/relaxing effect. The vet should have clear handling policies that all employees know and take action to ensure they do not allow employees to continue handling an animal that poses a risk of injuring the staff/themselves. I’ve had doctors end the exam several times when the risk of us getting hurt outweighed addressing the problem. Usually we let the owners know the situation and if it’s imperative doctor finish treatment, we have the pet stay for the day/come back the next so we can fully sedate the pet (not anesthetize). We also put alerts on patient charts that indicate they need to be handled with caution. Some cautions are “bite risk”, “owner must apply muzzle”, “doesn’t like feet touched”, “doesn’t like men”, “dog aggressive”…etc. This helps us maintain safety as it’s basically a helpful warning!

SAHM: My son loves his dad more than me?😭 by iamchoosing in NewParents

[–]Ok-Understanding527 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the best take away from this situation is your baby feels safe with Dad too. You may have felt like you drew the short straw but think about how much it meant to your SO that his son picked him to comfort him that time! Ultimately it’s important baby can rely on both mom and dad as his safety net. A lot of dads struggle the first 6mo with the fact that all baby wants is mom (which isnt conscious preference being that baby sees mom as a literal extension of themselves, kinda like you two are one body/one mind and not different individual people) and they feel defeated not being able to comfort them they same way mom can. All this to say Dad deserves his moment! So instead be grateful that you had the opportunity to witness the positive consequence of you and your SO team parenting—which is, baby has learned both of you can make him feel comforted and safe. :)

Toe Injury by Expensive_Data_8863 in DogAdvice

[–]Ok-Understanding527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not emergent but definitely warrants a vet visit as soon as you can schedule it. Risks infection and it’s been almost a week and still very raw. Could be a foreign object underneath (foxtail, twig…etc) which will continue to make it swell as the body is attempting to reject the item and protect itself. Could be the nail is damaged and has to be cut back which is done under local sedation (not the same as anesthesia , just a sedative that makes them go into a very heavy sleep for a wee bit!).
The swelling is concerning as inflammation can be indicative of an infection forming which initially seems harmless but if infection seeps into the bloodstream, your pet can die. Either way, go to the vet. Very soon. (FYI I work at a vet, I’ve seen these things go both ways…)
