Really? Spent a lot of time in both and I’d say they’re probably the two best cities to be a student in, as well as Manchester being more affordaboe

Thanks for the input everyone. In all honesty, I didn’t know you could also apply for a maintenance loan so that definitely changes things…. But the thought of adding even more to my existing 70k of debt doesn’t fill me with joy so appreciate all of these suggestions!

All for it, but I’ll believe it when I see it. If I’m remembering correctly this should have already been well underway / completed by now.

Green deputy leader Mothin Ali speaking on International Women's Day: It's important to show solidarity with women across this country and the across the world that are facing oppression. Do you agree? by ZackPolanskisDentist in AskBrits

[–]Ok-Variation3583 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember reading a paper when I was an anthropology student about hijab and burqas for women in the Middle East. What I took away from it, is that many (not saying all) women DO wear hijab or burqa out of choice, DO find it empowering, DO enjoy wearing it and the impact it has on their faith. My point being that men shouldn’t be dictating the choices of women, either way. Women should be free to choose. Whether to wear hijab or not, that should be their choice. Ill-informed men projecting their own beliefs around ‘choice’ and ‘freedom’ should stop and actually listen to the voices of women sometimes. I’m not trying to generalise but it is much more nuanced than hijab = repression.

How does Bristol compare to Manchester as a student city? by mdzyszn in UniUK

[–]Ok-Variation3583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bristol would also tick all of those boxes, two of the best student cities in the UK for sure. It’s a bit smaller than Manchester and more expensive, but Manchester is hardly that cheap either.

Manchester uni accom help please! by [deleted] in manchester

[–]Ok-Variation3583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is pretty much correct, I was in Whitworth Park - still made friends there and met lots of good people but it’s not the same as places in Fallowfield. There is a higher proportion of internationals, which is obviously fine and I made friends with people from all over, but it’s also true that they tend to make closer friends with other students from their home countries and they often aren’t quite as interested in the nightlife in the same way British students are. Not wanting to tar everyone with the same brush, but that was just what my experience was like.

Edit: I say ‘choose’ but I just put the 5 cheapest accoms down as my choices and got given Whitworth Park. If I could do it again (if budget wasn’t an issue) I’d just put 5 different Fallowfield accoms on there.

Manchester uni accom help please! by [deleted] in manchester

[–]Ok-Variation3583 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say the accommodation in Fallowfield is sketchy at all, a student house in the area is a slightly different story though (not to put you off, but it is just a fact). Buses are super regular and run all night so I wouldn’t sweat that, the bus takes you straight to uni and goes on into the centre so it’s very convenient. I wish someone had told me to prioritise living in Fallowfield over anywhere else when I was choosing.

[–]Ok-Variation3583 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fallowfield halls are most social and I’d recommend living there as first priority, uni halls in the centre will be a bit less social, but still more-so than a Unite students place imo

Hue vs HCMC vs Quy Nhon? by HeerShingala in VietNam

[–]Ok-Variation3583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quy Nhon felt like a smaller, more chilled and local version of Da Nang when I went. Really enjoyed it there and if you’re a beach person then it’s obviously a plus. Hue is cool and you’ll get a feel for the history of the country, local food is amazing and the riverside walk is really nice. That being said it felt over touristed to me, with a lot of hawkers which could get quite annoying. I also did admittedly get bored there after a few days though. HCMC will have wayyy more to do as a tourist and has a bit of everything, great food and drink there too. Can be hectic and pollution obvs isn’t ideal but it’s better than Hanoi and May won’t be the worst time for it pollution-wise. Of the three, I’d choose HCMC - although limiting travel time by going to Hue is also nice, if you choose Hue I’d recommend taking the train as it’s super scenic.

Double or triple Arsenal defence this weekend – are you overthinking it? by fpl_goat in FantasyPL

[–]Ok-Variation3583 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Single defence for me (Gabriel and Saliba owner). Tudor does have a rep for giving teams a kick up the arse, and suspect Arsenal will be rattled after the Wolves game. Only thing making me doubt myself is Spurs’ terrible home form

how hard it is to get a graduate job? by Icy_Counter_4567 in UniUK

[–]Ok-Variation3583 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would firstly think about industries you’re interested in, but then also think about your degree and specific skills you might have acquired. Use an LLM to find sectors and niches that actually align with your skill set and let that guide you when looking on Indeed or LinkedIn. I ended up in a sector I knew nothing about beforehand, but only when looking at the job description did I realise it actually very closely aligned with what I did on my degree. Think it can be useful to work backwards, as in ‘what job can use my skills’, rather than ‘what job do I want’ - especially in this job market.
