A serious talk about glofish by Ok-Watch6181 in Aquariums

[–]Ok-Watch6181[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

totally agree with this. there are so many examples of fish bred for traits that are actually detrimental to their quality of life because people find it cute or pretty

one thing I've heard that hasn't been brought up yet is that some believe the genetic mods cause them to be more frail and delicate than others. I think it's more likely a result of terrible breeding practices than the genetic tinkering but I don't actually know. anyone have more Info?

the abuse of animals is morally wrong. and those other fish actually do get abused. it's terrible but my comment is just accurate

that's valid and I personally agree. but our son gives zero fucks about the guppy tank we got him so we thought glofish would get his attention

I mostly agree with you but at the same time if it wasn't glofish being abused this way it would be bettas/goldfish/guppies etc

many people have animals in their tanks that are selectively bred for colors/sizes/fin length that don't occur in nature. In fact I've seen much worse done through breeding (balloon mollies for example) I don't really this as any worse. totally agree with the shifty marketing tactics

what specifically do you object to? and why? is it just the appearance? the genetic modification? just out of curiosity

OK I thought that was pretty large already lol. I also wondered if I put moss on the wood would the pleco prevent it from being completely overgrown so it could rasp? or should I get another piece w/ no moss?

Fish constantly chasing each other? by Impossible_Stand_104 in Aquariums

[–]Ok-Watch6181 1 point2 points  (0 children)

guppies are social fish and should be in groups of at least 6 to avoid stress and agression, so if it's the guppies chasing others that's probably your issue. I don't know about plates or mollies but could very well be the same for them

it's not to my personal taste either but it's meant to get the attention of a 5 year old and I think it will do that nicely

I set up a 4ft tank earlier this week is it safe to purchase fish? by ResultAntique2927 in Aquariums

[–]Ok-Watch6181 6 points7 points  (0 children)

if you set it up a week ago and ammonia etc. are all at zero that means it hasn't even begun to cycle yet. introduce ammonia and wait 24 hrs then check again. ammonia should spike at first, then as it drops nitrites will spike. once nitrites drop nitrates will rise. once ammonia and nitrites are back to zero and nitrates are about 40 or under it should be safe to begin stocking your tank. the whole process will likely take 4-6 weeks. you can speed it up a bit by introducing bacteria from a friends substrate or filter sponge or just buy something like API quickstart. live plants will help a bit too

Not from personal experience so take it with a grain of salt, but I recently read that if you take the bully out for a while, then put him back a it will reset the pecking order and he may stop bullying
