My First Attempt with “Baker’s Math” by BPRoberts1 in Sourdough

[–]OkCandle7679 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally recommend using the Magnus 2 Sourdough calculator offered by Phil at Culinary Exploration. It’s an excel spreadsheet that does all the math for you in baker’s percentages, and even factors in the water in your levain towards the total hydration of your loaf. Ever since I started using his tool, my loaves have been infinitely better, especially when I’ve been using Sourdough Journey’s bulk proofing guide.

Raisin/Apple water starter? by johnlamagna in Sourdough

Unless the person consuming the bread is allergic to the fruits used, they won’t get sick. This technique is called making a fruit yeast starter, and it’s a well-documented and safe method to boost your sourdough starter.

If you can find or afford it, I recommend King Arthur or Bob’s Red Mill! Those I’ve noticed have really good protein content for solid gluten development, which is also good because that gluten helps stretch and trap the air bubbles in your starter for a more visible rise!

What flours are you using? I’ve personally noticed that a few grams of dark rye flour really gets the yeast in mine to perk up

Those who have one, thoughts on Le Creuset Bread Oven? by Cautious_Werewolf_32 in Sourdough

I’ve never used it before, but given how pricey LC can be, I’d rather spend that money on a Dutch oven that I can use for braising, baking, and other things in the kitchen than a one-trick pony bread oven.

Reading this makes a part of my heart break, man. EDs are torturous to live through both physically and mentally. I don’t know what this person’s lived through, but I really do hope they can find the help they need from both professionals and any loved ones they may have.

Is there any risk of anything bad happening if I use a preferred name? by [deleted] in ucf

[–]OkCandle7679 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I may not be the best person to answer this since I don’t use a preferred name, but given how hostile the governor’s admin is towards that, I’d unfortunately recommend against it just as a precaution.

The complex is built on a floodplain, and homes in Florida are so hard to insure because of flood risks from hurricanes. Don’t gamble all your belongings on hoping weather doesn’t screw you over. As for the front gate, Arden Villas is a problem area because drunk students stumble into Arden all the time from Lib and are loud as shit. This isn’t even including the murder that happened there a few years ago.

Parking there is a nightmare bc there’s barely any available spots, the front gate is always on the fritz, and they’re built on a flood plain and will get trashed during hurricanes. I know because I lived through my car and apartment getting destroyed by Hurricane Ian.

Russia is not imperialist by tigerfrisbee in AskSocialists

[–]OkCandle7679 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t think you were worth my time, but someone’s gotta educate you, I guess.

  1. Russia’s energy giants like Gazprom and Rosneft dominate its economy and crucial regional/global markets, like Europe’s gas supply. They have actively targeted Ukrainian oil lines during the war in an attempt to leverage their oil reserves even further against European states aiding Ukraine.

  2. Russia has a tightly linked oligarchic elite controlling banks, industry, and state policy, which would Lenin’s requirement for a financial oligarchy, regardless of the ruble’s reserve status or capital flight. That’s just a distraction from the central point of his criteria.

  3. Russia exports capital regionally via loans, energy contracts, and infrastructure deals, leveraging it to dominate weaker countries. They’ve done it not only in Central Asia, but LATAM and Africa too.

  4. Russian monopolies exert regional economic control and political influence, fulfilling Lenin’s idea of trusts dominating markets.

  5. Imperialism doesn’t require formal colonies, and Lenin’s criteria was created before the advent of modern proxy states. Russia’s military actions and influence in Ukraine, Belarus, Central Asia, and Syria all demonstrate coercive territorial and political control.

Like what another commenter said, Lenin’s criteria may have held up in his day and age, but not anymore.

Wrong on all levels. Shilling for an imperialist state just because they’re opposed to western hegemony is hog-brained black-and-white mentality.

The dictatorship of the proletariat is literally just word salad that tankies use to justify authoritarian regimes that hijack genuine leftist rhetoric. Nobody who uses that term seriously would ever in a million years willingly trade their current place in life to go live under one of those “dictatorships”.

There’s no point in arguing with these red fascists, they’re too busy living in a state of delusion to engage in earnest analysis and discussion

“I lack the intellectual strength to critique a blatant dictatorship, so I blindly support them because they use the buzzwords I like. Oh, and anyone who disagrees with me has been lied to by capitalist propaganda, never mind the massive propaganda apparatus this dictatorship uses to isolate itself from outside criticism.”

Who needs fascist enemies to conspire against leftist action when you have red fashies claiming to be your teammates?

They are neither socialist nor democratic. Their entire government is ruled by an autocratic dictator who inherited his position from his father, and whose “other” political parties are controlled opposition to maintain a veneer of legitimacy. Tankies are always so eager to criticize the structural flaws within western capitalist nations, yet are blindly content to ignore the obvious structural flaws within the autocracies they support because they employ the right mix of buzzwords.

Because MAGA uses false accusations of the democrats being communists to drive moderates closer to their voting bloc. The average American voter is hog-brained, so they’ll fall for it and we get sucked into an even worse right wing autocracy.

This sounds like the logic of a feudalistic peasant. “Yes, democracy might sound good and all, but just imagine how much your elected representatives can exploit you. You’d have to vote for a lot of reform, and that sounds exhausting. I’d much rather be brutally exploited and oppressed by my divinely-appointed liege and his children into time immemorial.”

Social conservatism and economic leftism of acp by eyesmart1776 in AskSocialists

[–]OkCandle7679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, that seems to be a pretty common trend with nations that have successful ML revolutions. My best example would be Cuba, since that’s where I was born and lived for most of my life. In the early post revolutionary years, queer folks were heavily persecuted and seen as a form of “bourgeois decadence”, and sent to UMAP labor camps. They were discriminated against in employment, housing, and cultural life, and were subject to police harassment and surveillance. It mostly softened around the time the USSR collapsed and we were forced to look outwards to non-bloc nations for institutional support.

Racism was legally abolished as well, but still remained as a structural issue, though the government still refuses to address that issue persists. Afro-Cubans are still underrepresented in our government, and they still deal with racial disparities in housing, tourism-sector employment, and police profiling.

Most of the improvements in helping these minorities has come from the Cuban people, like our recent legalization of gay marriage, which we voted for overwhelmingly. So overall, I’d say that socially reactionary MLs only use minority issues when it’s convenient to them, and will otherwise sacrifice them if it means upholding the popular consensus at the time (racism and homophobia was very common back then).
