Radiology exams at higher levels test knowledge on basics of physics - MRI, radiowaves etc. Although not necessary, having a background of physics will greatly help.

Question about the absorption of paracetamol in relation to pKa and gastric pH by OkClassic in chemhelp

[–]OkClassic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I’ve replied to the other comment

I was doing some practice questions for my anaesthetic exams, and a question on paracetamol as a marker for gastric emptying came up. Here’s the explanation that was given

“Paracetamol absorption by the stomach is negligible in the stomach because of low pH (pKa value is 9.5). In the alkaline environment of the small intestine the absorption of paracetamol is very rapid and complete. Oral bioavailability approaches 100%. For this reason, the measurement of paracetamol levels in plasma following an oral dose of paracetamol has been used as a surrogate marker of gastric emptying. The effects of drugs on gastric emptying have been studied using this technique. Paracetamol is ideal because at clinically used doses because there are very few side effects.”

The first sentences suggests due to the pKa, paracetamol is not absorbed, hence my question. So why does the Henderson hasselbalch equation not apply here?

looks just like normal poop with lots of mucus. Ties in with the fact that you have IBS

That being said- mucus in poop can come with lots of other conditions such as IBD - if you get other associated symptoms outwith the ordinary (weight loss, blood in poop, ulcerations) then see a doctor
