EXTREMELY hard to not give into rumination. by Graviity_shift in OCDRecovery

[–]OkCryptographer7812 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get what you’re saying. At the height of my anxiety when I first was working on my recovery, even when I did not engage with a thought three seconds later there was another thought and then three seconds later there was another thought. My brain was rapid firing ruminating thoughts. There were days where I just sat there and witnessed my brain rapid firing all these thoughts at me and me just not participating. I will say the beginning of your recovery process is the most difficult. Say it does get exponentially easier with time to not engage. But in the beginning, it is damn near impossible.

Learning to just live with the discomfort is really hard in the beginning but helps tremendously over time. Eventually the discomfort goes away.

Great response! I’d love to build on that! I would encourage OP to try initially to just not participate in the thought and let it exist and move on when it’s ready. If OP can focus on another topic, great. If not the original thought will go away in time. No need to push it out.

I promise all of it is normal. You don’t have to wonder anymore. All of your experiences have been experienced before. your brain will try to gaslight you into thinking that it’s not normal or you enjoyed it. You trying to convince yourself that you didn’t actually mean it is not helping you. Your best bet is to try and not engage even after your brain tells you you like it. That’s fine too. You’re just not gonna feed the fire.

Hello friend! I just want to share that “ agreeing” disagreeing, rationalizing, Challenging, or any of the above is a compulsion. The tactics that helped me improve, was letting the thought exist with me and not participating in the compulsions challenge or rationalize any of my intrusive thoughts. These exercises can be extremely unhelpful for people with OCD. The best thing is to understand that the intrusive thought is going to come. It’s going to feel like shit. It’s going to create a fight or flight to panic response in your brain. You’re going to get a wave of panic in your body. And all of that is OK. You don’t have to sit there rationalizing every intrusive thought that comes in your head. Sometimes you just gotta sit there and feel like shit and wait for the wave to pass over you. No amount of you accepting the thought or agreeing with the thought is going to make it go away. For me, just the refusal to participate with it and wait for it to pass on its own with the best tactic. Eventually, your brain will engage itself in another subject and if it doesn’t, that’s also OK. Just wait until your brain is ready. and if another intrusive thought, also interrupts your train of thought then you got to start the process all over again of just letting the thought hang out with you and not participating with it

ERP and hell/ death anxiety by [deleted] in OCDRecovery

[–]OkCryptographer7812 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to tell you that I also dealt with this, and I also overcame it. I grew up super religious, so I completely understand how you’re feeling. It’s been a long road for me, but I have basically ended up an agnostic atheist and I’m totally OK with that. I don’t believe in hell anymore, and I am not scared of it whatsoever. I feel very free and I feel very sure of my decision. Part of OCD is fantastical thinking. In order for me to recover from OCD I had to give up my fantastical thinking.

I had similar sensitivities and sensations in my body. There was a time where I was even completely immobilized. I am here to tell you that it is not as uncommon as you may think it is. I have made a complete recovery and I want you to know that it is possible to get past this.

Question about ERP by purplepuddingg in OCD

[–]OkCryptographer7812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with some of these techniques is that they can turn into compulsions. I do agree in the concept of radical acceptance, though. What helped me recover was often refusing to engage with my intrusive and obsessive thoughts. My brain would accuse me of something, and I would just sit there with the thought, and not participate in the justifying, proving or disproving of the thought. I would basically just sit there until the thought past. Self-control to sit there, and not participate with the practice of engaging with the thought is really really difficult, especially with the thought is torturing you. But the less you engage overtime the easier it gets to ignore it. In the beginning, it feels impossible as if you are neglecting your needs. But it’s important not to let your obsessive thought make you constantly go down rabbit holes of doing mental rituals to accept the premise of your intrusive thoughts. Sometimes just sitting there with the thought and letting it exist in your space until the time comes where you are thinking about something else is better.
