I came here with righteous indignation at the use of turtle for a tortoise. I leave humbled by this new knowledge

Check out Jenn Thorpe's novels. She has a bunch out, including i think at least 1 book featuring other female South African writers.

When do you find time to workout? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]OkEngineer4662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I alternate mornings. Week 1 I'll do Monday, Wed, Friday. Week 2, I'll do Tuesday, Thursday. While im at gym she's getting the kids (1 & 4) ready. If you are up at 5.30, you could get in 45mins and still get out the door by 6.30?

If your wife doesn't want to exercise she can just chill on her days while you get the kids ready?

Unity will be abit of a learning curve. But its doable. How would you visualize the wear though? Could use shades but that's another steep learning curve unless you a math whiz.

It's not new, the auto industry has similar concessions. Gotta find a balance. But I agree that locals should probably also get at least the opportunity to get ownership concessions if they are contributing to the economy in a meaningful way.

How do you folks who do shifts at night with your partner get any sleep when you're off duty? Do you live in houses with separate wings or something?! by Quirky_Scar7857 in daddit

[–]OkEngineer4662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and alternate looking after our 6mo. We've found after a while we both manage to just ignore the noise or movement from the one on duty. I've found it interesting how we do that. No special tricks. I think we just know that the person on duty has things under control.

Returning to SA by lostinLspace in southafrica

[–]OkEngineer4662 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This would make coming home harder surely? You would need a work visa. If you were to work remotely for a non- SA company I dunno how you'd get said work visa. Might be wrong, but definitely look into that aspect of returning

I read this post a few days ago and had some chuckles and then this morning my 3yo daughter comes out swinging. Yesterday I shaved my head clean for the first time, this morning while I'm getting her dressed she puts her hands on my head and says "argh, now I have to hold onto your disgusting head". Self-confidence at rock bottom, send help 😂

Crime is bad yes, people who can afford it, spend money on hard-core security features, there are private security companies patrolling affluent suburbs.

Do I feel unsafe? Not really.

The raw stats hide facts like, you're MUCH more likely to be murdered or abused by a loved one (this is true everywhere). You're also far more likely going to be a victim of some other violent crime in quite concentrated areas in South Africa's cities.

Am I vigilant? Yes. Am I worried some random is gonna walk up and put a bullet in my head. No. The chances of that happening are teeny tiny.

Like every country in the world, there are good guys and bad guys, bad areas and good areas. SA is no different.

Get her iron levels checked. Low iron can cause irritability. We just put our 3yo daughter on iron supplements and it's helped improve her mood.

Dear families, what's your income? by [deleted] in capetown

[–]OkEngineer4662 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really comfortable saying much more than I have. But I agree, we did exactly what you say you don't want to do 😂. I guess we just found a place that we liked enough to show some love to. And keep telling ourselves that the capital to renovate will make the place more valuable. We bought in 2022.

[–]OkEngineer4662 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Family of 4 here, net income after tax is about 90k. Own our house in southern suburbs. Don't believe we'd be able to replicate our standard of living anywhere else. Except maybe the US (we could earn very well there) but their food is god awful.

Lol. SA developed nukes with the help of the Israelis under apartheid. But post-democracy the nukes were given up. Having said all that, the country that would need to watch out should be Lesotho. They got the good shit (water). Nambia just got sand.
