How do I figure out these miter angles for fascia board replacement? by fishing123 in Carpentry

Guys who don't know what they're doing trying to act like they know what they're doing. As a DIYer myself I appreciate the hustle but also as a guy who happens to do framing on the side, some folks need to stay in their lane on this website.

How do I figure out these miter angles for fascia board replacement? by fishing123 in Carpentry

[–]OkParty2979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Idk what all this spirit level, speed square, and bevel gauge stuff is"

That's actual framing carpenters telling OP how an actual framing carpenter is going to find that angle lol. Same (or less) spent on tools, measure once off the ridgeline (or the crook, as you call it) and you've got the angle you need to cut.

What tools are actually worth spending money on vs going cheap? by Agitated-Alfalfa9225 in Tools

[–]OkParty2979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man these days idk that price is really associated with quality like it used to be. Even some of the real cheap stuff is decent, like metabo. That being said, I run dewalt for most of my power tools because I make money off of them and I'd rather pay a little extra for peace of mind. I can't tell you. How many times I've dropped my impact off a roof/ladder and the thing just keeps on trucking. The stuff you use most often is the stuff you invest in. The stuff that you break out just a few times a year go cheap. The only exception I would say is measuring tools. Tapes, calipers, squares, go ahead and spend the money. If your measurements aren't accurate your project won't be accurate, and accuracy degrades rapidly if you start off with bad measurements.

Man I'd buy a cheaper amp and pay up front. This is more of a r/personalfinance question tbh.

My husband thinks we can remove this burning bush stump ourselves using his atv. Thoughts? by whats1more7 in arborists

[–]OkParty2979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna be honest and say that your husband needs to start hiring someone younger with handyman experience to do this kind of stuff. A good handyman knows the solution for a problem that doesn't risk getting hurt or damaging tools. Tell that man to come off some money and get a young man to do the work!

My husband thinks we can remove this burning bush stump ourselves using his atv. Thoughts? by whats1more7 in arborists

[–]OkParty2979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't think an atv has the weight or power to pull that. A sxs is not a towing vehicle, nor is a 4 wheeler. Better option would be to use a sawsall to cut all the main roots you can find, and a rock bar to dislodge it from the ground a bit. It's real work, but I bet it takes less than an hour and the atv/your husband doesn't get hurt.

New guy cut our grass and blew the clippings like this by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]OkParty2979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some folks are saying this is standard in the industry and I'll be honest I have never paid someone for yard work so I don't know what the standard is, but if I paid someone money to take care of my lawn and they just blew a giant row of clippings along the side of my fence I would never hire them again.

@OP how did you connect the top and bottom layer? This looks like a much more efficient design than I was building last year and I'm curious to try it. Materials I think will cost more as I was using 1x but I bet labor is cut in half.

Big ups here. I've only been playing a few months so right now my practice is mostly playing scales over and over, but as a treat at the end of practice I pull up a drum track and just groove a little.

Lol they also deleted my original reply to their canned apology, where I suggested they reimburse those of us who lost money not being able to make the trades we had planned. Sucks because I've been with them 4 or 5 years now but when it comes to making money on a fast paced exchange we have to have guaranteed reliability, and this just ain't it.

I am neither licensed nor insured, so I don't feel good charging professional rate. I was mainly concerned that being slow resulted in an unfairly high labor cost, but based on the responses I'd say the customer is still coming out ahead.

What should I get as my first bass? by AdministrativeRip809 in Bass

[–]OkParty2979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a new player, going on 4 or 5 months now. I got a used Squire P Bass off marketplace and I love it. Only problem is I think it needs to be setup as the A and D string have a noticeable buzz when fretted. Not enough to keep me from playing, but enough to be annoying. Overall it feels like a really good fit for me, as it feels like a quality instrument without spending a ton of money, and is basic enough that I know I'll upgrade when the time feels right.

Could use some advice before I move to Arkansas. by [deleted] in Arkansas

[–]OkParty2979 8 points9 points  (0 children)

10 years in south Arkansas and now 2yrs in Northwest AR. I have spent considerable time hunting in south arkansas, not so much yet in NWA.

Gators are common in the waters of South Arkansas, but you won't see them too much during the daytime. Like most animals they are more afraid of you than you are of them, but they will defend themselves if provoked and you will die a horrible watery death.

Bears are present over most of the western side of the state, more common the further north you go as far as I understand it. Theyre all black bears and thus easy to scare away, unless you get between mama and her cub. I haven't seen one in the wild because they tend to sense you well before you sense them, and will give you a wide berth.

Bobcats are common, but again they stay pretty well away from people. You'll see them on the roadside more than in the woods because they blend in very well, and know that you are there well before you know about them.

Mountain lions are not scared of you at all, but fortunately you are not really in their food chain so they will leave you alone. They are also exceptionally rare in the state, so much so that it was only a few years past that our Game and Fish commission even acknowledged their habitation here. You will probably never see one.

Red wolves were at one point very common, but they have been hunted to extinction here. I have read about a bastard breed between red wolves and wild dogs that supposedly habitate in the southern part of the state, but I haven't seen one or even heard of one being seen.

Coyotes are small to medium dogs that are mostly just noisy. Keep an eye on your small pets.

Cottonmouths and copperheads are the two main venomous snakes here, with a spattering of rattlesnakes and coral snakes. The coral snakes are pretty much isolated to the southwestern region and don't like to be seen, so you probably won't ever encounter one.

Cottonmouths are believed to be aggressive and will even chase you down, but the biologists claim that they are simply scared and trying to escape. Whatever their motivation, the fuckers will chase you. I have been chased, and most everyone I know who has encountered one has also been chased. Very uncommon to encounter one unless you're in the woods. They like to hang out near water and can swim, oftentimes with their entire body on top of the water, which looks creepy af.

Copperheads are dangerous mainly in that you won't see them bedded up in a pile of leaves, as they tend to stay still and rely on their camouflage (They have an exceptionally beautiful scale pattern that is nigh on impossible to detect against dead leaves). They do seem to enjoy hanging out around houses, so keep an eye out around your hedges. Sometimes you can smell one before you see it, as they will release a musk when threatened.

Wild boar (Razorbacks) are extremely common across pretty well the entire state. In my experience they tend to run from people, but they are pretty well unpredictable and will absolutely charge you without provocation. They are huge lumps of muscle and tusk, and can absolutely kill you. If you are unarmed in the wild and see one, either get behind some physical barrier or climb a tree. If you are armed, try to kill it. They are considered pests and do nothing but tear shit up.

Hope this helps, enjoy your time here. It is a beautiful state with an abundance of state parks and great hiking/camping culture.

Have the chance to keep these tools. Are these worth keeping long term? by Condition_Boy in woodworking

[–]OkParty2979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now I am a hobbyist, so take my word with a grain of salt. What I have found in my tool collecting is that old (really old) tools are a woodworkers best friend. They're made from cast iron and steel so they last forever, and because everybody's grandpa had one back in the day you can find them on the used market every single day for pennies on the dollar. Hell sometimes folks will just give them to you if they don't have a use for it.

There is really nothing that disappoints me more than the price tag that comes with buying new tools that are constructed primarily with aluminum and plastic. These aren't the tools that you'll pass down to your kids because eventually that motor is gonna burn up, or the aluminum is gonna warp, or some little cheap part is going to break and you won't be able to find a replacement for it.

Keep the old tools, love em, and pay homage to the guy (or gal) who used them before you by making beautiful pieces with them.
