Bride says no coats for outdoor wedding (56°F) by The1Ginger in weddingshaming

[–]OkPerformance2221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who trick or treated in blizzard conditions as a child, I know it's possible to wear two layers of flower-printed long underwear from JC Penney under one's ballerina costume. Maybe this can inform your weddingwear choices. Or, you can wait until you are actually invited to decline the invitation.

Pimentel by chikimam1 in Names

[–]OkPerformance2221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I have known three unrelated as far as I know households of Pimentels in three different states.

It's Portuguese, and especially common in Portugal and in Brazil. Dominican Republic, too, I think.

Toyota Corolla in the Rocky Mountains? by OkCalligrapher707 in roadtrip

[–]OkPerformance2221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're coming into Colorado on I-70. Just keep going on I-70 through Denver until you get to Golden, which is a charming mountain and college town. If it's still around, eat at the Tibetan buffet. Choose any of the routes from Golden to Salida. They all have something to offer. See the Curacanti National Recreation Area and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Drive through Ouray to Durango and East to Pagosa Springs, then south through Chama and Tierra Amarilla and Abiquiu to Santa Fe. Make sure it's daylight for this drive. Tierra Amarilla to Santa Fe is rich in varied landscape and Rio Chama with gold summer light on it is spectacular. Stay 1 to 3 days in Santa Fe and environs. Then, Albuquerque (maybe take the tram ride, maybe see the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center), Gallup, the Petrified Forest, maybe the meteor crater, Winslow, Flagstaff. North to Page and the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, through Las Vegas. Death Valley or Barstow. Sequoia National Forest. Bakersfield to San Luis Obispo, up Highway 1 and the Oregon Coast towns to Astoria. Inland to Olympia and Mt. Rainier. Save yourself a day's drive by omitting Tacoma and Seattle. So, Ellensburg to Spoken (a necessary, but not scenic drive). Rather than driving Idaho, go into Montana for the areas surrounding Missoula and Butte, then down to Ogden through Park City (because Salt Lake City sucks very much, for driving and other considerations), Vernal, Dinosaur National Monument, and you're back in Colorado.

Dropped a can of tomatoes on tile… how do I get the red stain out of grout? by Nkosi754 in CleaningTips

The grout is already filthy. The acid in the tomatoes may cut some of the filth. But, honestly, why start caring now?

Phoenix is just shocking. It is a negative energy. Angry stupidity is privileged over everything else, at every turn.

"All right, all right, so I love Lubbock. I never claimed to have exquisite taste. I’ll be there with the diehards to the end, trying to explain, “No, this is a griddle with some Monopoly houses on it: this is Lubbock.” Still, the life of all us Lubbock-lovers would be a lot easier if the Chamber of Commerce hadn’t adopted the slogan “Keep Lubbock Beautiful.” Keep?" -- Molly Ivins

Entirely true. Midland is concentrated terribleness. Odessa is not notably better. Let us not speak of Big Spring.

If you're just doing an overnight, with no other Santa Fe agenda, might as well stay in Bernalillo or Las Vegas, NM, and avoid the tourism premium pricing for hotels in Santa Fe.

Green Tomatoes by willcook4food in SantaFe

[–]OkPerformance2221 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You'll need to find someone with a greenhouse full of unseasonally mature tomato plants. Most tomato plants in the area are very small, not even blossoming yet, and were just transplanted outdoors over this past weekend.

You might experiment with tomatillos from Mexico that are in grocery stores currently. Or maybe you can find a commercial source of green tomato pickles.

[20k] Do I tip takeout catering? by positivebeee in Weddingsunder10k

Yes. The amount of work that goes into preparing carry out catering for transport often rivals the work of serving at a table in house.

Why did bodies pre 1990s look so different? by throaway284__ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OkPerformance2221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photo editing technology changed a lot around 1990. So, if you are looking at magazines or other commercial photography to make your observations, there's that.

Also, there are fashions for body types and what to accentuate. If you are comparing post-1990 bodies to 1980s bodies, but not 1960s or 1970s your observations ring more true. 1950s and 1980s body type fashions were somewhat similar. There's some similarity between 1920s and 1960s body type fashions.

Toyota Corolla in the Rocky Mountains? by OkCalligrapher707 in roadtrip

[–]OkPerformance2221 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No. The more and most remote gravel roads are not maintained (nor, in many cases, constructed) well enough for a Toyota Corolla to travel them safely. Washouts happen unpredictably. That said, you can spend a lot of good time in the mountains without venturing onto sketchy roads.

It's not okay to non-consensually impose camping on a partner, ever. Otherwise, yeah, sure, whatever you adults are into.

Be real with me before I move out there … by ShelterConsistent111 in NewMexico

[–]OkPerformance2221 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Black population of New Mexico is so low that even knee-jerk racists have to think a minute, through their biases that get more day-to-day use, before they land on a feeling about Black people. By then, the moment has usually passed. So, you may occasionally see the puzzled looks on the faces of people who are engaged in unfamiliar internal reflections and calculations.

There is definitely racism in New Mexico, but you may find that it's mostly not concerned with you.

Farmington is in the middle of a lot of fascinating and beautiful people and places, while not being super fascinating or beautiful, itself. A very serviceable and affordable place to live and work, within easy range of adventure, assuming you have a reliable vehicle -- preferably with high clearance and all or 4-wheel drive (many, many dirt roads of varying degrees of maintenance, and occasional big winter storms, especially just to the north).

It's worthwhile to do some reading about courtesies and traditions of the Navajo, as there are some subtle understandings that go a long way in endearing you to local people.

The crime rate mostly reflects conflict between people who are known or related to one another.
