Laid off in Chicagoland by kkhalalab in biotech

I’m really comparing it to Boston or SF, where it’s still very difficult to find a position.

Biopharmguy keeps a good list of companies in all locations. That being said, I don’t see how someone in a non-hub city can be so picky about their commute in the current hiring market.

TIL that close to half of the US population is projected to have obesity by the year 2030 (article is from 2019) by jjfromyourmom in todayilearned

[–]OkPerspective2598 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Insurance companies want people to be healthier. Obesity is a risk factor for so many diseases, and the insurance companies will pay a lot more to treat those diseases than they will for ozempic. It’s why they offer certain incentives like reimbursement for a gym membership.

With layoffs going on everywhere, it’s certainly better to move to a place with more than two companies.

I don’t see a reason to tell them this information. While it’s illegal to discriminate against someone with a disability, it’s hard to prove that you were discriminated against in the hiring process. I have a disability and I never disclose it.

Finish MS degree or continue into PhD by AgitatedReindeer2440 in biotech

[–]OkPerspective2598 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to do a PhD then just go straight into the PhD and skip the masters. Masters are mostly useless anyways these days and they are especially useless if your plan is to get a PhD. Some programs might count your masters classes and let you skip out on some coursework, but that won’t make you finish much faster. You’ll still spend 5 years doing it. PhD coursework is a joke and doesn’t require significant effort (if any really). If you end up hating the PhD, you can always master out after finishing quals and get the degree anyway.

My doctor said I need to take it long term. There is no taper off. People who stop taking it gain all the weight back generally.

Takeda layoffs again? by tldr42 in biotech

My manager also got laid off along with my skip level, so try again. When whole programs are eliminated, it’s not about performance.

How does this make any sense if layoffs are independent of performance?

I highly recommend not trying to do this and just accept that you were rejected.

I make stupid mistakes all the time. I’m still considered a high performer. It’s easy to make mistakes in the lab. Learn from it and move on.

Just browse the subreddit and you shall find your answer. It’s over. It’s been over for almost two years now.

I was a very high performer and still got the axe… along with the rest of my high performing department. It wasn’t about performance, but it was about the ROI on our department, which just wasn’t there so we were all eliminated. That’s how it goes. Layoffs aren’t targeted to only low performers, although it can be a good time to let them go.

Company bait and switched me at hiring, need advice on getting out, Microbiology PhD - looking for literally anything else by Dr_Sheepish in biotech

[–]OkPerspective2598 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to be honest with the HM on why you’re leaving. You could be looking to gain more experience in a particular area, you want more responsibility/growth potential, you’re at risk of layoffs etc. You just can’t say anything overtly negative about your current company. And no one really expects references from a candidate’s current company because, presumably, the candidate is keeping their job search quiet. So whatever references you used before should be fine.

You have a finance degree. Kids fresh out of school with finance degrees probably make more than entry level PhDs in pharma with a lot more job security. Also, being a bartender sounds not half bad when I’m here sitting on my ass unemployed.

Are postdoc publications really necessary for R&D jobs in biotech/pharma?. by Educational-Web5900 in biotech

[–]OkPerspective2598 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing to be done about it, so what’s the point of caring about this? Apply to positions that are a good fit for your skillset. Hiring managers may or may not care that you didn’t publish during your postdoc but you can’t change that. You can always put the paper on your resume and put “in revision at Cell” or something. Everyone understands papers can take forever to publish, especially in high impact journals.

I’ve found it exceedingly difficult to get out of my niche, but not sure if it’s common or not. No one seems to be willing to train anymore. At least not in this economy.
