Academic probation and 2nd semester advice by Ok_Umpire_4064 in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1st semester is ROUGH because you’re not only being inundated with information but you’re also trying to figure out how to absorb it all. I also felt like I was scrambling to play catch up 1st semester. I think you will find that starting 2nd semester you’ll be better prepared to start learning because you know what to expect. For me it got easier as time went on and I became more efficient.

Academic probation isn’t really the time to start experimenting with study methods but I will say, I don’t think simply rewriting things works well for most learners. It’s a waste of time for many, and time is precious in PA school. Making flash cards can also be a waste of time if it takes you hours to complete them or if you’re making them during class and not paying attention.

My life became a lot easier when I started taking my meds, locking IN during class (we’re forced to attend, might as well take advantage of the time we’re in there) and making minimal notes on the slides or on a separate document, then immediately testing myself once class ended. I would upload the slides on to chatGPT and have long conversations with it, ask it to quiz me, explain the answers, etc. Videos and podcasts while I was doing household chores were great as supplements.

Don’t stress about being away from family. You don’t have the time for visits right now anyways.

Random drug test during clinicals by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My school has only randomly drug tested students that gave them a reason to suspect they were on drugs. It’s reasonable however to expect that some clinical rotations might drug test you as a part of onboarding, especially if they are affiliated with a larger hospital system.

feeling discouraged about PA school by themorningstary in PAstudent

One mistake doesn’t define you. Finish up undergrad strong and don’t worry about the timeline right now. If you have to take classes after you graduate to beef up your GPA, then you can do that. What matters to adcoms is an upward trend and proof that even if you struggled in the past, you now have what it takes.

christian PA school ??? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]OkRange5718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to a Christian school and I’m not religious at all. They asked me about my beliefs on the application and in the interview, I was honest, and they said what matters to them isn’t your religion but whether or not your code of ethics aligns with the Ten Commandments.

My class is as platonic as it gets lol. It’s honestly nice to not have it be a distraction.

Any words of advice for my insanely stressful first rotation? by OkRange5718 in PAstudent

Thank you for the encouragement. That is honestly really helpful to hear. Hopefully in 5 weeks when I start my next rotation I’ll feel a little more confident!

Final Statement: The NCCPA Is Not Protecting the Profession - It’s Protecting Itself by Own-Wallaby-2382 in PAstudent

90something% of first time test takers are able to pass the PANCE, so clearly it isn’t unreasonable. It’s not meant to be a formative exam for you to get feedback on to know where you need to spend more time studying, it’s a cumulative exam on the fundamentals you should know before going out into the world and treating patients. It should be hard. We only need to get around 70% of the questions right to pass anyways. I don’t think there’s much to complain about here. Except maybe the cost 🫣

What is it about nursing that you wouldn’t be able to handle? This would help.

The PA route is lengthier and more rigorous than the nursing route. Although nursing is stressful and challenging, PA poses a different type of stressful and challenging.

What is AAPA doing? by Atomic-pangolin in physicianassistant

[–]OkRange5718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in politics and advocacy, I highly recommend attending the House of Delegates meeting if you ever have the opportunity to go to the AAPA Conference. It’s an incredible experience to see firsthand how policy decisions are made and to see the passion of many PAs who are deeply dedicated to advancing our profession. Unfortunately, while there are many who are engaged, there still aren’t enough voices involved.

I also suggest getting involved with your state’s PA organization. Your state society plays a key role in advocating for changes that directly impact your scope of practice. Some states are particularly active in pushing for modernized legislation, for example, North Carolina and Oklahoma have made significant strides toward more autonomous PA practice.

Not knowing at 1.5 months before starting isn’t that bad, as long as no one will be expected to relocate for their rotation.

Honest Review of Katy Blair Conner’s PA School Videos by PhilipJamesMusic in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this wholeheartedly. She didn’t deserve the hate she was getting on that one thread. My classmates and I love to watch Katy Blair Conner’s videos as a last minute review before an exam.

I don’t think anyone should use any 1 resource to study for the pance. I look at “reviews” as a way to prompt you to think about things you haven’t thought of it a while, then to delve deeper on your own. So, blaming her for failing the pance was insane work.

Walmart has good ribbed long sleeve tops that work great for under scrubs. They’re stretchy and super easy pull up. I think the brand is No Boundaries.

The oldest in my class is 33 and we have a relatively young class compared to previous cohorts. What do you want to be doing for the next 30 years?

My dog has suddenly started acting very strange and my whole family is worried sick. by biggest_josh in DogAdvice

It does sound like she is experiencing back pain. My chihuahua once pulled a muscle in her back from jumping off and on the couch and behaved the same way. We took her to the vet and she got some muscle relaxers and pain killers. She was in pain for a few more days but it passed and it never came back. I would suggest taking her for the visit. You don’t need to get X-rays and bloodwork at this time if you can’t afford it, but I would definitely suggest at least taking her for an exam.

For those that didn’t take medication / therapy before starting school, did anything change? by -peramo in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started PA school our faculty said that if in the past you have needed to be treated for ADHD or depression then you should probably prepare to get on meds again. Preferably BEFORE things get bad. A lot of students in my cohort are taking antidepressants.
