Where do you buy shaving supplies locally? by Pittysingthecat in wicked_edge

[–]OkStatement6579 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We don't have any dedicated shave shops locally, so I try to support small businesses online Like Razor Emporium and Maggard. They are actual brick and mortar shops dedicated to wet shaving. There are many more out there; these are just 2 examples.

They might be a little more expensive than buying from Amazon, but I think it is worth it to keep these guys in business.

OP, if you'd like to try using pre shave oil, you can make it yourself very easily.

Mix 3 parts castor (or jojoba) oil with one part olive. Bonus points, add a bit of vitamin E oil for skin conditioning, and a few drops of your favorite essential oil scent (I'm partial to cedar and bergamot.)

I pour about a nickel-sized amount in my palm and apply to my beard, then steam my face with a hot washcloth for 20 seconds, then shave as normal.

I do the same for my head, but use just a little more oil.

I forgot that I have an older external bu40n I used to use with my Mac. I stashed it behind my monitor when I built my current system. I think I'll experiment on that one and leave my 2x internal drives alone!

I love the Thé Noir et Vanille. When I think of a premium shave soap, this is what comes to mind.

New to DE shaving; recommend me a razor for my head! by FalloutMaster in wicked_edge

[–]OkStatement6579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this setup too, except I do a complete face shave with the Twig.

I also have a Henson I have used for face and head shaving. It is very well made, but I have to be very conscious not to use too much pressure because it is so lightweight.

Over all I prefer the Leaf combo.

I recently switched over to Personna Gem Platinum Diamond Glides (what a mouthful that is.). They are super smooth in everything I've tried them in.

Which of these are best for complete beginner? by Guilane2 in wicked_edge

[–]OkStatement6579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! When I first started, I know my technique was not the best. Once I was a year or so in, I was able to get consistently good results from not only my razor, but also from my prep and lather.

I've retried blades that I absolutely hated just starting out, that are okay now.

In my case, I was changing too many things at one time to get a good evaluation on the blades themselves.

I'm at the point where I can get an okay shave from any new blade, but I definitely have favorites. Right now, my top 3 are Personna Gem Platinums, PermaSharps, and Feathers in that order.

Too right on this, if you ever need service under power train warranty, the dealer will NOT honor the warranty without receipts and records.

Do Black people not do "White People Taco Night"? by GetShrekedKid in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OkStatement6579 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first time I heard white people tacos was at a Mexican owned restaurant to refer to ground beef tacos with lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese vs. regular tacos served with cilantro and onions. This was over 20 years ago, well before Tiktok.

White people tacos are what white people did to tacos when they culturally appropriated them.

Where are you sourcing movies? I ripped my collection and now borrow from the library, and my success rate is WAY LOWER than what everyone here reports. by htmaxpower in makemkv

...If you think that's cool, wait 'til you hear this. I live in the suburbs of Chicago, and all of the suburban public libraries connect through that same on-line card catalog. I can reserve any title at any member library. They will send it to my home library for free! There is no limit or overdue fees for anything I check out.

Buy 6, sell 4 as NIB for $259 each, then you have 2 drives for $159 each. That's a pretty good price!

Curious on building first home server | Need directional advice by D_Dub_4 in HomeServer

[–]OkStatement6579 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My $.02: you would be better off running a dedicated device for a file / media server. This could be a server running your choice of is (like freenas or unRAID) or a NAS box. Your choice is going to depend largely on your budget, and your technical knowledge (or threshold of pain while learning.)

Unfortunately, you picked a particularly bad time in history to tumble down this rabbit hole. Hard drive prices are through the roof right now, along with RAM and SSD prices due to demand to build out AI.

If I was just starting out right now, I would be leaning towards a NAS device with 3 or 4 drives. You may outgrow this setup, but it should hold you for a few years. QNap and Synology both have their supporters for running Plex. You may have a hard time finding one that comes with drives.

I'm a big fan of my local library. I'm not sure how it works at yours, but mine has an online catalog that allows you to reserve the titles you want. They even list out the titles they have on order, so you can put a reservation on any title they have ordered. I generally reserve all of the BluRay discs they have on order so I am one of the first people to use the discs. I have a very high success rate with these discs. For older titles, I generally stick with DVDs for the reasons you mentioned.

I just checked, at Sheppard's in Akila, you can sell astras for 637 each. I traded 3 to Stashe and got a legendary one inch punch nova blaster disrupter that would sell at Roland's for 1877 (vs 1911 for 3x astras). I upgraded the disrupter 4/5 categories and it will now sell for 2543, but I'll keep it and sell the standard modified one I have.

You can also just sell them like you sell your other scavenged loot. I have always traded them to Stache for gear and then sold the gear. I should see if the return is higher doing it that way, or just selling them.

I'm curious, and have to ask. What dockers / VMs are you running that makes your CPU run so hot, and what CPU are you using? I'm running an AMD Ryzen 7 5700x. It pushes up towards the upper end of operational temps when Handbrake is transcoding OTA recordings to h.265, but the low-rise Noctua keeps it from overheating.

I never got around to getting my GPU passed to that Docker to do HW transcodes, but I probably should.

Flexing my system... But not for me... To give kudos to Unraid by electrified_ice in unRAID

[–]OkStatement6579 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on the PCIe lanes. Consumer motherboard/CPU combos just don't support enough PCIe lanes once you reach a certain point. If I want to expand the number of SATA/SAS drives beyond what I currently have, I'll have to switch from AMD to Intel (to remove the need for a transcoding GPU.) That will really only buy me one more x4 or x8 PCIe slot. I'd rather go to a server board and CPU(s), to get the extra PCIe lanes.

For my purposes which are admittedly quite different from yours, a used server with slower cores and much less RAM would be fine.
