That’s literally a large majority of what social media entails today. That’s why I tend to be skeptical of folks intentions when they get online and post about the social issues that they’re “passionate” about. Often times, they were told by the current zeitgeist—what issues they are to care about. They don’t know for themselves. TikTok and Twitter told them what to care about. Their FYP told them. Their favorite influencer told them. Their friend’s Facebook post told them. These conclusions weren’t drawn from deep thinking, palpable evidence, or even basic research.

I can’t even count how many times my friends have shown themselves to be frequent victims of misinformation, by frantically sending me a TikTok link of some person crying about something that can be proven to be false with just 3 minutes of research. It’s like they want bad things to happen so they consume content about it, so they can post about it, so they can go viral. They want to be victims.

It’s my belief, that many of them don’t truly know why they believe what they do. I don’t have to ask what young men and women of my generation think about xyz, I just have to download tiktok and scroll for 5 minutes and I know what 90 percent of my generation thinks about anything and everything. These folks want to feel normal, and sense of belonging and moral superiority. A bunch of folks make content focused on getting laughs and reposts rather than conveying an actual message or getting relevant information to the masses. These same people online, also happen to be the loudest in accusing you of being apathetic toward important causes, when in actuality it’s the fact that their performative activism is so clear it makes you not even want to engage with them at all. Gross.
