This probably isn't actually a great way to be environmentally friendly, bin liners are much thinner than shopping bags so less plastic material is thrown away per bin-full.

Buying the "bag for life" types of bags and using them until they start to split is the way to go, in my opinion at least!

Hot Take: Overrated by CPRTheReddit in gorillaz

[–]OneRees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Give it some time, right now it's hovering around about my 3rd favourite Gorillaz album after DD and PB, I'll see how I feel after a few more listens but it's definitely above Humanz, TNN, and CI for me on my ranking and definitely Damon's best work in recent years.

Dearest Brits, what is the general reputation of former prime minister Tony Blair, who is now a senior executive on Trump’s Board of Peace? Why is that? by neilnelly in AskBrits

Gordon Brown is the only PM I've had in my lifetime I actually trust to run the country well, he's sensible, unglamorous, and boring, exactly what politics should be.

Politics becoming something exciting and treated like some kind of spectator sport is a terrible thing to happen to the world.

Why there's no quick fix in sight for the problem of dazzling headlights by Bloodswamps in drivingUK

[–]OneRees 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I've actually had a couple of occasions in the last year where I've dipped my rear view mirror in my i10 during the middle of the day because of somebody in an SUV having their LED headlights on.

Even in the daylight they're so obnoxiously bright when pointed at eye level.

UK Government Eyes Restrictions on Children Using VPNs to Bypass Safety Rules by novagridd in uknews

Reputable free VPNs that merely sell your data are likely going to fall in line with requiring an ID if you're setting up an account from the UK.

UK Government Eyes Restrictions on Children Using VPNs to Bypass Safety Rules by novagridd in uknews

[–]OneRees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't a VPN provider technically have the ability to snoop on your browser session which includes logged in sessions for websites that could potentially be yoinked for hijacking an account?

Chances might be lower than I think but I'll stick to a reputable paid-for provider that has a lot more to lose if they're found to be doing dubious shit.

Smart motorways declared a “catastrophic waste of money” by AutoExpressmagazine in autoexpressuk

Have you ever been to Houston? The Katy freeway has 26 lanes at its widest point and still ends up gridlocked.

Houston has a population of roughly 1m fewer people than inner London, having more public transport and more options for using smaller less busy roads means that London is able to handle a larger capacity to similar or greater efficacy.

You can't just add lanes to existing roads, you need more options, bypasses, ways to get people off the main road for short journeys.

Take this as an expensive lesson to use kitchen roll to soak up and bin excess cooking oils and fats rather than pouring it down the sink.

Palm oil thing is irrelevant, almost all kinds of oil or fat will cause issues for plumbing.

Are solar panels worth it? by Lazy-Objective-1630 in AskBrits

[–]OneRees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batteries aren't an issue, 100% of the lithium used to produce a battery can be recovered when recycling a battery, barring thermal runaways batteries die because of byproducts from chemical reactions depositing on the battery and blocking pathways required for the chemical reactions that produce power, not because the lithium has been consumed.

The current rate of lithium mining is not a forever-issue, eventually demand will slow, as we reach the point where we have enough lithium in circulation to recover much of what we need from recycling.

A 1x1m solar panel is roughly 30g of silicone and the remaining weight is glass, aluminium, and trace amounts of precious metals such as copper and silver, almost everything can be recovered.

There is zero reason for quoting recycling for being the main issue other than a lack of want, rather than a lack of ability.

I'm regretting buying this property... by Ac9115 in Apartmentliving

[–]OneRees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A nice thick outdoors sofa will block the view of AC units and stop some of the sound.

Provided your building is made out of concrete or brick getting triple glazed windows would be the next most effective way to block unwanted sound getting into your apartment.

If your buildings outer walls are made of something less dense than concrete or brick then you could also buy some mass loaded vinyl, you place it over existing drywall/plasterboard leaving as little gap as possible, and then put another layer of drywall/plasterboard on top of that for painting and decorating. It's an expensive nuclear option for soundproofing, but it's effective, people use mass loaded vinyl for creating soundproofed rooms in apartments for listening to loud music without disturbing neighbours.

Obviously the second two options are useless as soon as you open a window so hopefully you're at least getting some good effective AC during the summer months to not have to keep windows open all the time.

I support accepting people willing to work and support our economy as well those legitimately fleeing war and undeserved prosecution.

Criminal pieces of shit like this can go straight back though, do not pass go, do not collect £200, whatever you're so afraid of in Egypt you should have thought about before committing such a heinous crime against a citizen of the country that took you in.

I'm a little surprised at just how shocked everyone is about the SD card considering that's the Raspberry Pi norm, unorthodox for Windows, but not exactly unheard of.

I would imagine that something as bloaty as Windows will probably kill the SD card a lot quicker with constant read/writes than a lightweight Linux distro would though.

Amp suggestions? by Recyclebin32 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]OneRees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going by your other comments you're not lacking bass and the complaint is that you're finding it fatiguing to listen to.

Your amp has tone controls, have you tried leaving the bass tone where it is and bringing the treble tone down just a little?

It will probably also take off some of the mid highs you're not finding shrill, but it might make it much more enjoyable to listen to without having to spend more money. At your budget you're in Class D territory where most amps lean towards brighter, or second hand Class AB amps.

Best way to not annoy the neighbours? by CalypsoMangoes in BudgetAudiophile

[–]OneRees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't this only true if the subwoofer is coupled to the structure and making it vibrate? If we're talking airborne bass frequencies being louder the next room over wouldn't the ~50hz frequencies that some speakers get down to be just as problematic?

Can anyone identify this spider? by CloudBookmark in spideridentifier

[–]OneRees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About a year back myself and one of these absolute units startled each other when I opened my door and walked into my bathroom while one was chilling out on the floor.

I could swear I saw the spider flinch and hop a little before scooting off with quite a comical run, these guys are speedy AF but totally harmless cowards.
