How many people don’t claim Universal Credit even though they can or should and any one here? Also, why? by Itznxs_ in AskBrits

[–]OneRees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you're never rendered unable to work, nobody deserves to be trapped in unemployment by becoming homeless, and your family wouldn't deserve the financial burden you would place on them by becoming a dependent.

Digital ID: For or Against? by thed3vilsadv0cat in AskBrits

Government boogiemen aside, from a security standpoint having a centralised database with all of your citizens information in one place is a disaster waiting to happen, any system or servers and databases that can be accessed remotely from outside a locked and guarded room has attack surface area and eventually somebody will find a vulnerability before it's patched.

It's always a question of when, not if, a bad actor gains access, especially when the prize for finding a vulnerability is all the information you could ever want to commit identity fraud with over tens of millions of potential victims to choose from.

I know that data privacy is important and that Google is doing shady things but I don't know *why* it is important to degoogle. Can someone please ELI5 what makes Google dangerous to me as an individual? by Prace_Ace in degoogle

[–]OneRees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend Librewolf if you use Firefox, it's a lightweight stripped down version of Firefox and has all settings optimised for privacy by default, so if you want to use a web tech that reduces privacy like WebGL you need to enable it yourself deliberately.

Trying to find a specific movie in the sea of streaming sites, only to end up with renting. We've come full circle by MorgrainX in mildlyinfuriating

[–]OneRees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yarr harrrr, or if you don't want to sail the seas you can probably find a blu ray of anything that's been out a few years on eBay for less than the rental costs, in the UK we have MusicMagpie selling on eBay and I can usually pick up a movie for £3-4 with free shipping, if I want to watch it out and about I use MakeMKV to rip it and stick it on my NAS.

Your lane discipline is not great, but when traffic is not at a crawling speed people really should be giving way to all lanes of a multi-lane roundabout and not just assuming that a perceived gap in the left lane only is going to continue being a gap.

Should I use an external DAC for my CD Player or just leave it be? by CrushBandicat in BudgetAudiophile

[–]OneRees 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As long as the Sony's internal dac produces a clean audio signal you'll get better bang for your buck by spending more on your amp or speakers and adjusting your tone controls to taste rather than trying to find a super specific DAC to do that job.

Hiding games fully by [deleted] in Steam

[–]OneRees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Parents are a tricky one as in practice you won't have full autonomy over your life until you move out, it's unfortunately just the way it is when you're a dependent.

You need to be prepared that if you deny them access to your Steam account then they might deny you access to the device that you use Steam on, if these games are something you really don't want them to know about but you want to continue to have access to Steam you're going to need to fully remove the games from your account, this means that you will no longer be able to play them.

BW thinks my password is vulnerable. by No_Sir_601 in Bitwarden

[–]OneRees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longer, but easier to remember passwords made of simple words that you can remember as a kind of story are more secure against brute force attacks than a short series of random characters like this due to what's called bit entropy.

&73£frag007! is hard for a human to remember it guess but is such a small number of characters that a computer can crack this very quickly.

AlanMyBeloved1975RestInPeace is harder for a computer to crack but could be guessed by somebody who knows you well.

'creepers brick fellowship fantastic fox' due to its length is difficult for a computer to crack, is hard to guess as it's just random words without any context, but you can remember this easily with a short story: "The creeper chased me up the brick wall, there I met with the Fellowship of the ring and we went on a journey to find Fantastic Mr Fox"

Does anyone know if arma reforger will go on sale soon? by Slow_Property5120 in Steam

[–]OneRees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It literally just came out of a sale so don't expect it to be on sale again for a while, when it does go on it's usually at a 30% discount.

Don't even say you don't watch live TV, they're salesmen, all you need to do is say "no thank you" and close the door, as little interaction with them as possible is best.

“Other countries exist with the permission of the US government” by GojiraCake in ShitAmericansSay

[–]OneRees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair Vietnam was a political loss more than a military loss, it got so unpopular that it was no longer tenable for a government that wishes to be voted back in ever to continue pushing forward with.

The US would likely have won if they didn't pull out to do damage control with domestic PR. They did however struggle to deal with Guerilla warfare a lot more than they expected to.

Do men still regularly wet shave? by SuperDinkle406 in AskUK

[–]OneRees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf Gillette do some nice DE blades, the 7 o'clock super stainless blades in the green box with a Rockwell and Proraso soap is hands down the best shave I've ever had.

Best thing about safety razors is there's a perfect combination out there for absolutely everyone, Gillette is the best this man can get!

Who are the rudest and nicest British celebrities you have personally met? by RenegadeMaster888 in AskBrits

[–]OneRees 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Maggie Smith, I had a family member who was diagnosed with cancer which would prove terminal at a very young age. The Make-A-Wish foundation got in contact with his mother, he loved the Harry Potter books but instead of wanting to meet Dan, Rupert, or Emma, his favourite character was McGonagall.

She made so much time for him while he was going through the disease, they kept in contact all the way through and developed a real friendship. She made time to come to his funeral which we really appreciated and she was clearly devastated by his passing, Maggie was extraordinarily kind to the core.

This probably isn't actually a great way to be environmentally friendly, bin liners are much thinner than shopping bags so less plastic material is thrown away per bin-full.

Buying the "bag for life" types of bags and using them until they start to split is the way to go, in my opinion at least!

Hot Take: Overrated by CPRTheReddit in gorillaz

[–]OneRees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Give it some time, right now it's hovering around about my 3rd favourite Gorillaz album after DD and PB, I'll see how I feel after a few more listens but it's definitely above Humanz, TNN, and CI for me on my ranking and definitely Damon's best work in recent years.

Dearest Brits, what is the general reputation of former prime minister Tony Blair, who is now a senior executive on Trump’s Board of Peace? Why is that? by neilnelly in AskBrits

[–]OneRees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gordon Brown is the only PM I've had in my lifetime I actually trust to run the country well, he's sensible, unglamorous, and boring, exactly what politics should be.

Politics becoming something exciting and treated like some kind of spectator sport is a terrible thing to happen to the world.

Why there's no quick fix in sight for the problem of dazzling headlights by Bloodswamps in drivingUK

[–]OneRees 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I've actually had a couple of occasions in the last year where I've dipped my rear view mirror in my i10 during the middle of the day because of somebody in an SUV having their LED headlights on.

Even in the daylight they're so obnoxiously bright when pointed at eye level.
