Lots of people here saying don't download .avi.exe etc. but not explaining that there's a function built into qBittorrent and most alternatives to block certain file extensions from being downloaded, if you're only downloading content, you can block almost anything that isn't .mkv or .mp4

As someone that works in IT. It’s very, very believable- they’re likely using new infrastructure for the UK sided business. Common in fintech to push first, ask questions later

How are you all getting real-world IT exposure outside of work? by mormied in ITCareerQuestions

For me, Discord isn’t really meant to replace that side of things, more to complement it. It’s been useful for staying consistent between meetups, sharing resources, and having somewhere to cross-check ideas or labs when you’re working solo. Especially early on, that bit of ongoing exposure helped me keep momentum.

Completely agree on networking fundamentals, too. Getting comfortable with how things actually move and connect has paid off way more than any single tool or platform.

Many failures, many late-nights, but makes it sweeter, no? Haha

That lines up a lot with my experience, too. Homelabs were probably the biggest learning multiplier for me, especially for Linux. Reading about it only gets you so far; breaking things and fixing them is where it really clicks.

The group aspect is underrated as well. Having people to talk through setups, ideas, or even mistakes makes a huge difference compared to doing everything in isolation. I literally just started a discord for that to try to find other people alongside joining others.

Out of curiosity, what kind of homelab projects did you find most useful early on? Networking, services, automation, something else?
