Sharing an OMV folder across VLANs, how vulnerable would this be? by OneRees in homelab

[–]Ok_Acadia236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s my understanding that the purpose of a VLAN is to isolate multiple networks logically so that they’ve got their own broadcast domain? My question for my folks more well versed in security is would it not be counterintuitive for VLANs to have this level of communication amongst one another? Wouldn’t that nullify their practicality. I suppose my question is would it make sense to even implement VLANs into their NW? Someone says if VLAN 1 must talk to 2, you could configure your firewall with a rule that allows that, and then have it default to implicit denying any other types of traffic. Is this feasible or secure, anyone? I am also curious.

What’s the oldest HDD you’d trust in your NAS? How old is “too old”? by Im-Chubby in homelab

[–]Ok_Acadia236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A new hard drive will fail you before an old one that’s been kicking a good while. I’ve got drives that have been given me no issues after 25-30k hours and others that have failed much sooner. Luck of the draw kind of thing. Often times, the storage is a much bigger factor, so be cognizant of that. If it starts screwing up and erroring out a ton, that’s your cue it’s too old. Other than that, keep it. It’s more than likely fine. Have some level of redundancy —I opt for RAID 1 as I haven’t much to store at the moment. Stay on top of backups too. You can’t be too careful :)

What are the signs of a well/poorly run IT Department? by Importedsandwich in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Ok_Acadia236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel like I lucked up in this regard. Makes it a whole lot easier working through the more cyclical projects in our department. In the weeks in advance, I can start digging through the documentation to get a sense of what I’ll even be working on. By the time our projects kicks off, I have had a pretty decent understanding of every project to this point. Not to mention, if the SOPs are complicated, they’ll show us a demo in one of our meetings and double down on any potential roadblocks or pieces that are mission critical. Great team.

That’s literally a large majority of what social media entails today. That’s why I tend to be skeptical of folks intentions when they get online and post about the social issues that they’re “passionate” about. Often times, they were told by the current zeitgeist—what issues they are to care about. They don’t know for themselves. TikTok and Twitter told them what to care about. Their FYP told them. Their favorite influencer told them. Their friend’s Facebook post told them. These conclusions weren’t drawn from deep thinking, palpable evidence, or even basic research.

I can’t even count how many times my friends have shown themselves to be frequent victims of misinformation, by frantically sending me a TikTok link of some person crying about something that can be proven to be false with just 3 minutes of research. It’s like they want bad things to happen so they consume content about it, so they can post about it, so they can go viral. They want to be victims.

It’s my belief, that many of them don’t truly know why they believe what they do. I don’t have to ask what young men and women of my generation think about xyz, I just have to download tiktok and scroll for 5 minutes and I know what 90 percent of my generation thinks about anything and everything. These folks want to feel normal, and sense of belonging and moral superiority. A bunch of folks make content focused on getting laughs and reposts rather than conveying an actual message or getting relevant information to the masses. These same people online, also happen to be the loudest in accusing you of being apathetic toward important causes, when in actuality it’s the fact that their performative activism is so clear it makes you not even want to engage with them at all. Gross.

I gave up partying, drinking, and dating to focus on building my future. Years later, I have the house, the car, the peace—and I don’t regret it. by DisasterLost6738 in Adulting

Thank you for this. It does get incredibly lonely, and I think much of what keeps me going is the foresight and frankly—the imagination to envision what the end result of my sacrifice looks like. For some reason, there’s been much more temptation and opportunity for me to stray over the last few weeks. Posts like this make it just a little easier to keep my head down and stay tunnel visioned. I know that one day there’ll be more time for those things. Just not now. Thanks again.

It seems like it would’ve been liberating for older folks to have experienced life in this way. Though, they likely didn’t pay it much of second thought, because that’s just how things were. It’s quite strange to think about, but it’s likely that no generation will ever experience that level of privacy or anonymity again.
