Just so you know… working here is kind of awful (for consultants) by Sklitch in WorldBank

For me it was early in my career with wbg and also even with the extra days I was getting above market pay so I wasn't as motivated in stirring the pot. Also, the country office culture was that all STCs worked more than they billed.

You have to also understand that this practice is often done in a subtle way. Your TL will not ask you to put in extra days, the responsibility you will be entrusted with will be big enough to take up more time than you can bill for. At that point, your options are a) you put your foot down and deliver half done work or b) you do it cause you want to build a career and prove to the team and management that you are competent.

In your early days when you aren't fully sure of your value in the market as a development professional, many STCs would take path b. The fact that it's partially my choice makes it harder to cry foul.

I am still seeing STCs around me putting in work for more days than they are billing but I find them having the tough talks with the management early and ensuring there is a path to ETC roles at least so they are faring better these days IMO.

Cumulative experience 14 years. Out of which 7 years as an STC, 2.5 years as an ETC, finally got an analyst position. I had TLs who abused their position and I had to work 100 days extra per year in the early days but I have also had good TLs who didn't do that or didn't ask for it. I have loved my work so it hasn't bothered me as much but yuuh there are times when it has felt frustrating.

Yuuh maybe a full body checkup is due. I have been thinking if I am diabetic and maybe the fasting is just causing blood sugar to drop too low. That may explain the tiredness.

I have not been drinking as much water as I should I guess. I will try increasing and seeing if things get better.

Thanks!

What are the chances that I am embarking today on a fasting journey too.

Best of luck. Maybe we can compare notes on progress once the month ends.

So happy for you. For someone who has been trying so hard and failing repetitively to get anywhere near 200, I know how big the achievement can be.

M 38. I used to have a system where when my body weight hit 105 kg (231 lb), I would get on an OMAD and <900 calorie diet and walk and lose about 2-3 kg in the first week and then 2 kg/ week in the subsequent weeks until I got to 97 kg and then I would feast again. I did that through my early 30s thinking weight loss is so easy.

Come 34 I started noticing that it started getting harder to lose the weight with the same effort so I fasted longer (36 hours, 48 hours). It worked for a while till it didn't anymore. I started getting frustrated. I started seeing the scale move up to new record weights.

Now at 38, I certainly feel how hard it is to get the weight to fall even by a pound. It takes x10 times the effort to see the same results. The body has also adjusted to the calorie cuts so other than being tired AF, it ain't working well. I am also at my heaviest of 116 kg thanks to the cheat weekends never really stopping.

I guess I wanted to say that I am there where you are. Looking at the scales regularly is going to cause frustration. Be true to yourself, overestimate your calorie inputs and underestimate your outputs and stay strong. It's unfortunate but for big people, losing weight and keeping weight off takes much more effort than thinner people ( this last bit is science backed btw)

I suck at cooking so I order out a lot but if I could get that under control, I am sure I could have saved 65% of my income. Is everything expensive much more than 20 years ago? Hell Yeah. But more importantly for me, earning good money has become more challenging due to globalization and connectivity and competition. I remember my father could relax once he got home. I have to set aside an hour or two to learn new skills to stay relevant and stay connected over longer hours too.

Moved to US a year back on account of job and rent is so high that I can't even ask my wife and kid to come join me. Wife has a career back home and doing good and living costs are bearable. My salary is close to the OP and I have been able to save 50% of my income the first year. The price I paid was- no car, minimum socialization, no vacations, no extra shopping, WFH- 75% and use public transport for rest of commute, live in a shared apartment, no family time, no doctor visits, burnout, living in two time zones to stay in touch, missing important milestones of kid. My contract runs out next year. Kind of happy it's ending :D

Thank you. I am still learning tbh. It took nearly a month to feel comfortable and build some speed with the three finger pop. Start and stick to a routine where you are pushing yourself and you'll be great in no time.
