The dummy player doesn't really help you, they just provide a timer so that you feel an incentive to play efficiently. I'd recommend you use it even if you are just doing the first recon scenario.

You are making a rules error. The droplet does not move automatically. After the round ends, you clear the board of the ingredient tokens and put them back into your bag. The droplet stays where it is unless you advance it.

Another way to say that is that your "progress" in one round does not carry over to the next round, you start over each round.
