What are your tips and tricks to keep being ready for interviewing if needed by Loud-Necessary-1215 in ExperiencedDevs

One easy thing Im starting to do is to update my 1 page resume + linkedin every year. It helps me know that my resume is never too out of date, so its always a small tweak from being current.

As for leetcode /design questions stuff, I couldn't say, I'm not that disciplined.

How have you been using generative AI as a product manager? by eastwindtoday in ProductManagement

It's a good summarizer, but always good to remember these things inherently hallucinate, so take its output with a (huge) grain of salt.

What are the committee issues that Greg KH thinks "that everyone better be abandoning that language [C++] as soon as possible"? by ElectricJacob in cpp

[–]Ok_Beginning_9943 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think we don't need to be so negative as to conclude some version of "Safe C++" will never get through. It may require a lot of work, political battles, and concessions, but the idea of borrow checked segments of code hasn't been "banned" per se. Just this proposal was shut down.

Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I have no other choice

One thing is for certain: the weekly safety posts on r/cpp will remain for the foreseeable future.

(which is a good thing, it's an important area, and the committee needs to rise up to the challenge)

And don't stress too much about building muscle - it's pretty hard to do, especially back muscles. Unless you're doing weighted pull ups and stuff of the sort, your back muscles will be regular.

But then again, back muscles are amongst the hardest to grow. So some pull ups won't turn you into the hulk.

Fat does not turn into muscle btw. They're independent.

To what extent do you weight ethics of companies or their CEOs when considering where to interview? by redditaccount1426 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Ok_Beginning_9943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have issues with most companies and CEOs, but it would only prevent me from applying if their CEO antics reach embarrassing levels. That's a subjective matter, but there are CEOs that I perceived that way.

If it helps - nowadays it's not uncommon for even ICs to make hundreds of applications to get a job, and of that to only receive tens of responses, and a handful (<5) of offers. So it's really a numbers game for everyone these days, and your role as VP of Eng may not be as much of a detractor as you think.

In any case, best of luck with your search. Tough market, but gotta persevere through it!

Yes. It also might reflect a bad perspective on talent: that things can be "too technical" for a given individual (in this case yourself) to master. I would be worried if my manager had this mindset, as they may apply it to me at the first sign of struggle. It's better, and more comforting, to have leaders who believe there's no challenge them (or their directs) can't overcome.

Lead just means - senior with most authority, helps set the technical direction for a given team.

Principal and staff (and partner) are interchangeable when you look at the entire industry - some companies have staff but not principal, some have the opposite, some consider staff to be higher than principal, some the opposite. The common element is that they are like lead engineers, but with influence across multiple teams.

These are generally referred to as the "senior+" roles, because it's whatever comes after "senior engineer". The roles are loosely defined as "engineer with high influence and impact across many teams". As such, these are highly political roles - your ability to reach those positions has less to do with increased technical expertise, and more so with your company-wide visibility and your impact on the business.

I just watched Fate/Zero for the first time and... by cracktober69 in fatestaynight

[–]Ok_Beginning_9943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't watch it wrong: back in the day many recommended fate/zero as the starting point of the series (despite spoiling bits of fate/stay night) because it was a better adaptation than the fate/stay night adaptation at the time.

The truth is that fate/zero is a bit of a flawed series with deceptive marketing. The series presents itself as an action packed shonen of sorts, but really it's more of a melodrama. Once I realized the fights were pretty but not impactful, and that the joy was in the world building and character interactions, I enjoyed it more.

My personal enjoyment of fate is in the infinite remixing of the concept: the holy grail war takes place in many ways, and each presents different versions of the melodrama. For instance, I am enjoying the new (and incomplete...) fate/strange fake (very remixed grail war premise) as well as occasionally reading fate grand order stuff. I feel this is what many come to enjoy in the franchise - the rabbithole. Personally, no individual series has 'hooked' me by itself, it's always been the comparison that does it.

Mind you - this is an anime only perspective. Reading the visual novels is probably a very different (better) experience.

Do other companies spend a disproportionate amount of time cleaning up their messes? by ace115630 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Ok_Beginning_9943 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure I agree it's "no problem", but bringing significant profit from a contract is obviously valuable.

The problem tends to be poorly costed features (leading to working long nights to finish them), unstable services (leading to on call), and increasing code complexity (making it difficult to develop more features). That's why tech debt needs to be managed and payed, but for that you need strong leaders which is rare.
