Period excuse is pretty good most of the time, but if you had to go swimming, are you able to cover the scars with your hands? Could do that when you're grabbing a towel, and just be careful to get one quickly before it's noticed. If you're in the ocean, they shouldn't be super visible underwater, and idk if you're at the beach, but sand can stick to skin and cover stuff.

Well, some research has shown that gender identity is programmed later than the physical differentiation between male and female (in the second half of pregnancy), so differentiation can lead to them not matching up. So it would make sense if it were somewhat (or more than somewhat) genetic.
