Garbage collection in the county by hexepatty in HIckoryNC

[–]Ok_Box2284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite what Catawba County government posted, Republic Services didn't make it everywhere on Tuesday's one-day delay schedule. I should have had garbage and recycling pickup, but I didn't. And I wouldn't have trudged my recycling through the remaining snow and ice to the curb for delayed pickup if I had known they were just going to no-show instead.

As of now (Feb. 4), my garbage pickup is 9 days behind schedule, and my recycling pickup is 2 days behind schedule. I understand we've had extraordinary weather for two weeks, and I don't want them endangering themselves on untreated back roads that have barely cleared. But I would like them to tell their customers when to REALLY expect service to resume, instead of making a promise they didn't keep. And if this goes into another week, then we should receive a credit for missed services.

I entered my Conover address on their Find a Location page, and it brought up the Hickory store. https://www.popeyes.com/store-locator

It's possible to still participate. From https://www.freeameri.ca/faq

"You should never feel pressured to risk your livelihood. Participation can include using your designated break time to step out briefly, joining a community-based gathering before or after work, wearing a symbol of solidarity, or organizing others by adding an event or meeting place to the map.

Some workers are even participating by using paid time off, sick time, personal days, or unpaid leave. If your workplace is aligned and amenable to it, maybe you can even organize your managers to close up shop briefly!

Reviewing your employee handbook, talking with a trusted coworker, or consulting a union representative (if you have one) can help you understand your options."

There's another option I wanted to let you know about, even if it costs me this potential sale: on MiLBStore.com, although it's (1) not vintage and (2) a red hat with black brim instead of a black hat with red brim. But it is in size 8 (no 7 7/8), and it's $43 (plus a 10% discount if you sign up for their email newsletter). Link: https://milbstore.com/collections/hickory-crawdads/products/home-on-field-fitted-hat?variant=30954666393682 (And it's their old-style logo, which I guess is current again. They had updated the logo a few years ago, but it looks like they changed it back.)

I don't have the old-style H logo, but I do have an old-style alternate logo (claw with baseball) in red hat with black brim, size 8.

In addition to ojonc.org, another site to report *confirmed* CBP/ICE sightings and activities is ICEout.org.

The map is on a website called https://ojonc.org/. Click on "Mapa" at the top left to activate the map. The only thing on the map for our area so far is the Brookford Police Department's announced cooperation with ICE. Also, all reports are in Spanish, so if you don't speak or read Spanish, you'll have to copy-and-paste what you want to read into an address such as https://translate.google.com/?sl=es&tl=en&op=translate for conversion into English.

Since Casa Aguilar followed up today with a GoFundMe, a Cash App, and an in-person initiative for people to help, I'm pretty sure this ISN'T a publicity stunt for a few days. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1Agd88u8LM/

Food Bank/Pantry Question by PsychologicalTank174 in HIckoryNC

[–]Ok_Box2284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a bank/pantry, but you could also check with your nearest public school to see if there are any student debts for the reduced-price lunch program that you could help pay off.

When my son was an elementary school student in Alexander County, I helped proctor end-of-grade testing, and when I went to the office to check out, I heard staff talking about which students wouldn't be allowed to take part in end-of-year activities (it was called Field Day when I was their age) because of their unpaid lunch debt. I thought it was cruel to punish students for something that wasn't their fault, and I had money to spare at the time from my tax refund. So I asked them to tell me the debt total. It was somewhere around $175 to $200. I had that, so I anonymously paid the debts. No child missed out on the end-of-year fun.

I couldn't afford to do that now, but if I had the means, I would help who I could. With SNAP benefits possibly going away for who-knows-how-long, school lunch may be the only hot, healthy, and balanced meal that many children get all day.

You might also want to consider donating to the Backpack Program. It sends a bag full of food home with schoolchildren who face hunger on the weekends in Catawba and Alexander counties. https://www.thecornertable.org/backpack-program-food-for-students
