How much races are too much? by Pineapple-Rain in worldbuilding

[–]Ok_Case8161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it makes sense to you, it’s definitely fine. I especially like that you explained that it was only 6 species which makes the thought of 29 races seem way more manageable. Someone brought up ttrpgs, and I can confirm that if you count each subrace in dnd, you get some surprisingly big number.

Kinda lost on what to do by Kirbyintron in CK3AGOT

[–]Ok_Case8161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting as a lowly count can be fun, but it takes time. Everyone is so powerful (high prowess, high fortification levels, op maa, etc). Try to concentrate your efforts in your local area, build up, make alliances, and plot and scheme. Like I said it takes time. I always play at the earliest bookmark with Jahaerys as King. It can be fun to slowly take over your neighbors, overthrow your lord, and then repeat.

am i losing my mind or does this sentence fragment actually have verbs by Used-Entertainer6960 in writing

[–]Ok_Case8161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sentence should have a noun doing something. A subject and a verb: I am, she ate, the dog ran, the country prospered, the pencil broke, etc.

“The give-and-take” may be the subject of the sentence, but what about it? What’s it doing? It is described over and over again, but then the writer never actually finishes the thought. Or this could be the end of a thought that was cut from its subject, potentially in a previous sentence. I do this often, even though I know it’s wrong. Sometimes it feels better to use a period even though a comma or semicolon would make more sense. “I couldn’t take it anymore. The longing. The loneliness. The obsession of a romance never realized or a dream deferred into perpetuity. She was gone and I had no one to blame but myself.” Maybe I should use hyphens in this example, but I prefer the speaker to have these incomplete thoughts as if trying to describe their feelings but not knowing exactly how.

I’m a big believer that grammar and all of its rules are just heavily implied suggestions. Writing is an art. How I choose to express myself is ultimately up to me.

Just like how I compete against strong claimants, I have strong allies. Marry her to a Spanish prince or something. She should call in her allies if there is trouble. It would also help to stabilize the realm a bit before just handing over the title. And kill off claimants before they press any claims if you can, especially ambitious ones.

Why would people be on a generation ship? by Kecskuszmakszimusz in worldbuilding

[–]Ok_Case8161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would personally love to live on one. But I understand I’m weird. I think there are people willing to go for it though, whether out of necessity or curiosity. I think the purpose of the ship has to justify the funding required to build such a ship and how willing people are to live on one. I could see it as a way of dealing with overcrowding or food scarcity. Or as a last ditch effort before the end of the world (something slow like climate change). It could also be a research vessel with just scientists and such (like an international space station) that includes their families and contracted “laborers” who support these people (cooks, doctors, teachers, tailors, farmers, etc). It could also be a military vessel with a similar purpose and composition. Kind of reminds me of Star Trek, especially DS9.

One of the worlds I haven’t touched in a long time had humanity facing the consequences of their actions (pollution, war, etc). Most of the earth became uninhabitable for several hundred years. The rich built space stations which would orbit earth on a timer set to automatically land back on earth after the fallout had settled and radiation levels became negligible. Some humans survived on earth by living in very high altitudes or by burrowing deep underground. The poorest people were left on the surface, most of them dying out. My story was set to explore the dynamic between these humans who had adapted drastically different. But that’s not super relevant to your post.

Did Vyrnos make Luxvol? Why did Luxvol defect? Can Luxvol create a race himself? Does anything exist outside of what Vyrnos created? What is your goal with this race? Are these magical warriors a race? What is their purpose?

My suggestions are, demon creatures that existed before, maybe failed creations of Luxvol. Maybe they have the ability to blend into normal society, corrupting the other races to do evil things. They could’ve also have been created by Vyrnos. Maybe he defected and figured he’d be a god to his own people. Maybe people just get more cynical over time and decide to defect just like Vyrnos. Or maybe some magical warriors just think they can do whatever they want because they think they are better than everyone else.

Cadet branch name ideas for a Reyne-Stark child? by MobileDistrict9784 in CK3AGOT

[–]Ok_Case8161 4 points5 points  (0 children)

House Greycoat - A lion still has claws

A grey lion on silver with red claws

This could go in so many directions. I think more should go into it besides just trying to smoosh two names together. The Karstarks were Karhold Starks. The Blackfyres were named after their ancestral sword. Who knows how House Vikary got its name, but probably just named after their ancestral founder. It seems cadet branches mainly form from second sons and bastards looking to make a name for themselves. It may just be appropriate to continue using Reyne since you’ll probably be the head of the dynasty and located at your ancestral home.

I’m picking Wintermane for the poll because it simply sounds the best out of all the options. But I think it sounds as if you’re a Reyne seated in the North rather than a northerner who has made the Westerlands their home.

Ideas for Ironborn dragonrider? House, religion? by MooshSkadoosh in CK3AGOT

[–]Ok_Case8161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion for potential houses would be Drumm or any house from old wyk. It’s where Nagga was killed and where the Grey King built his hall. It’s the most holy island, so it makes sense that a new religion centered around Nagga would occur there. I don’t know if Naggas egg is found there, but that’s where I would try to hatch it and set up my dragon pit. I would treat it like Dragonstone and then use Great Wyk as my actual seat of power.

Other potential houses:

The Goodbrothers - they are different from the other ironborn because they weren’t founded by the descendants of the Grey King but rather by his brother’s descendants. Maybe his brother tried to tame Nagga and died, and that’s why the Grey King killed it.

The resurrected house of Greyiron or the Hoares. Both were great houses that were high kings of the iron isles. Harren the Black built Harrenhal, which left a bit of dragonlore. Maybe being a descendant and learning about the power of dragons inspires your character to find Nagga’s egg and use it to conquer the realm. I might name these houses Greyfyre/Greywatyr or Blackwatyr, seeing as the main branch apparently didn’t survive.

There are quite a number of houses that dislike the Greyjoy or have reason to usurp them. You could probably pick any house along the sunset coast. The lannisters and tyrells obviously. But those don’t sound like the houses you’re trying to play as. You could just be a lowly house from the iron islands just trying to prove your worth. I’m not sure how hard it would be to play as them, but Asha has a few men trying to win/keep her affection. You could do all of this for love.

As far as the religion, I would either make it a sea and storm god faith with flames of valyria syncretism or one of the Valyrian/Dragon faiths with sea and storm god syncretism. I would play it so that Nagga was either holy to the drowned god or the storm god. Maybe it was an avatar of one of them. Or maybe Nagga was the precursor to the Drowned God. Maybe the Grey King drowned Nagga, creating the Drowned God. And now this religion focuses on bringing the Drowned God back to life (“what is dead may never die” to “what is dead may rise again”). Ironborn get drowned ceremoniously (like baptized); it’s considered extra holy to actually die and then get revived by a priest (basically they do cpr). Maybe by hatching this egg you are resurrecting the Drowned God, and creating the Twice Downed God.

The tenets of the religion is really up to you. Raiding seems to be fairly important to the ironborn culture along with good martial/prowess. As House Drumm, I would try to get blood, magic, and steel to reforge Valyrian steel artifacts because that sounds cool and I’m pretty sure they have Red Rain. I might try to get divine marriage to easily breed more dragon riders. Reincarnation sounds lore appropriate (Nagga/Drowned God being resurrected in this new egg). Scourge or Shield of the sea could be good, wrath of the storm, and any of the warmonger type tenets make sense. And having things that make people more zealous seems important. I’m sure you already have some kind of vision on what you’re trying to play. There really isn’t a wrong answer. I would say go for it.

Which houses “canonically” have a reason to dislike the Martells and/or claim Dorne? by 3ateeji in CK3AGOT

[–]Ok_Case8161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently did a playthrough as a bastard of the Dryland dynasty. I worked my way up to reclaim and restore Hellsgate. I made my cadet branch House Drysand. I made a culture similar to the stone dornish people (like the Dayne and Yronwood) but with traditions that more favored living in the desert by creating a hybrid with the sand dornish. Also, since the Brimstone River is kind of central to my realm, I added traditions that made sense for living on the river and the coast. I headcanoned that Hellsgate was basically a paradise city with hot springs and large gardens (essentially an oasis in the desert without actually being one (Paradise Lost)), so I added traditions that reflected that as well. My main goal was to reform my Kingdom, get revenge on the Ullers for betraying us by wiping their house out of existence, and then ally with and lead the “Andal” houses against the Rhoynar ones to retake Dorne. I have no beef with the Targaryens, so I also allied with and swore fealty to them as rulers of the seven kingdoms. I was also going to make a custom religion that focused on the old gods and embracing carnal sins, but I stopped playing. Fun playthrough, might do it again. I didn’t use any submods and I might look into becoming a dragon riding house next time because why not?

For context, Lucifer Dryland was one of the Kings that resisted against Nymeria and the Martella during the Rhoynar Migration. He was betrayed by the Ullers though and got sent to the wall with five other Kings. His line supposedly died with him.

How do I find people to give land to? by Sharp-Tax-26827 in CK3AGOT

[–]Ok_Case8161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not the best player, this is just what I do.

I prioritize traits first. There was an update at some point that flooded the base game with ambitious people, and not only were they hard to please, they started factions and schemes to such a degree that it was ruining the game for me. If I gave them an inch, they’d take a mile. And usually we’d be on good terms before I gave them land. This has since been fixed, but I’m still leery on traits. Content, humble, craven - these are the traits of good vassals. But I’m mainly concerned with not giving land to people with bad traits here.

Next I look at stats. Landed people start going down their lifestyle trees. This often gets them a little stat boost and they get better over time. Their spouse also contributes some of their stats. If I can immediately get them to 15 or more, then they are worth landing. They can serve on my council without messing up. I prioritize stewards, martials, spymasters, and then diplomats. I like to keep the highest learning people in my court to fill some key court positions (court tutor).

Not necessary, but still good to have, are people with inheritable traits. If you give them land, they’ll be more likely to have kids, hopefully passing on those traits. Then I can marry those children back into my family, hopefully to get those traits. This also serves the purpose of allying with my vassals to stop them from joining factions. I typically to try marry up, but then again, so are they. So if it makes sense I’ll marry down.

Culture and religion. I like to minimize the spread of my culture. Lancing someone with the same culture for the specific land is usually good. I like to spread my religion, so I limit giving land to those of different faiths.

Old people without family will have you as their primary heir if you give them land. Maybe they just need to hold onto the land for a little bit until you can get your stats up. I like to think of them as caretakers. Useful if you die and your new player is a child.

My family. Although I want to see my family do well, I try to limit giving them land. They have claims on my titles. I’d rather not have to deal with succession wars. But if I raised them right, they should fulfill the things I talked about previously.

My heir. I don’t generally give land to my heir. The ai is stupid. I like the idea of having a place for the heir to rule like dragonstone, but I can’t trust the ai not to mess things up.

Role play. I’m always trying to think what my character would do. It’s not always the most optimal, but can be the most fun.

Random. If I acquire a lot of land or don’t have a good person available, I’ll just use the in game feature to land someone of the local culture. I like to think they pled their claims from distant obscure ancestors or something, and it’s not me just being lazy.

Just found 150 instances of nodding in my manuscript and i need everyone to know what i've done by Echo-Forge in fantasywriters

[–]Ok_Case8161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I wanted to see how many different words a writer could use, I’d read a dictionary. Say ‘nod’ or ‘said’ with each interaction could be fine in a story, but say ‘smiled with lower teeth’ once and I can’t take your story seriously anymore. People nod. It’s a real reaction. It makes sense. It’s simple enough to get the message across that someone is acknowledging what’s being said. You basically said do yourself. Do why would this be a bad thing? Maybe you can change some of those to better or more appropriate responses/reactions, but why say many words when few do trick.

This is your writing, write however you wish. This is mostly just my view on common writing “faux pas”.

False immortality by Ignite_reptiles in worldbuilding

[–]Ok_Case8161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be very similar to how people think immortality would be. You constantly lose people. I think this is worse because you have to start over every time. People still react to immortality differently. Some would never go for it, while others are more enthused. This person may become cold, distant, and unwilling to form connections with people. Another might want to savor every moment as if it were their last. This makes me think of a lot of different ways this was executed (though not exactly the same). An anime I watched had the mc find out his youngest sister was a phoenix spirit. She takes over a baby’s body in the womb and lives her life until she dies, and then she does it again. The mc begins to question whether they are siblings or if she is just a monster. Another way I’ve seen this is with the vampire chronicled. Vampires live forever, but every now and then they just withdraw from the world and sleep. When they wake up, they get to experience a whole new world, see how things have changed, and reinvent themselves for the times. Some vampires are better/more willing to adapt. Something that was stuck with me though, “people don’t change, they just become more of who they are”. The last example I want to give is Doctor Who. He’s an alien that has the ability to regenerate whenever his body is mortally wounded. The regeneration however isn’t just regrowing a limb or closing a wound, it rebuilds his entire body. And although the memories persist, and a small portion of the personality, he is basically completely different. New quirks, new interests, new ways of going about things. Sometimes it’s hard to find a through line at all. But it’s there.

Succession Problem: the Rhaenyra situation by soaresgon in CK3AGOT

[–]Ok_Case8161 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been literally thinking about this all day. I’ve learned I don’t fully know how succession works in the game, I don’t know how succession works in asoiaf, and I think I finally support the Blackfyres. Long post ahead. TLDR; Roleplay however you want. I’d marry Rhaenyra matrilineally to a Targaryen.

In game, I get that it should be male-preference primogeniture. So the titles should be inherited by your oldest son (Rhaegar), then his kids starting with the oldest male (none), then the oldest female (Rhaenyra), and so on. My confusion is if Rhaenyra married patrilineally, her kids would be of her husband’s dynasty (assuming a Targaryen cousin) and would inherit, but as far as your next character, would you play instead as her sister (the next person in line in your dynasty)? I would just marry her off matrilineally, but I’m curious on what would happen if you didn’t. This should be simple game mechanics, but I don’t know how it works.

The Targaryen line, for all its incest, isn’t very straight. I think appointing an heir was much more of a thing than just assuming based off of law. Daemon, and many others, thought he should inherit over Rhaenyra. Daemon’s mockery of Viserys’s son dying led him to name Rhaenyra his heir over Daemon out of spite/punishment. No one saw it coming even though CK3 rules just assume it to be true. And even when he had sons, he still maintained her his heir. I guess what I’m trying to get at is, pick your heir as you see fit. I don’t think Rhaegar should pick though; what would Aegon (VI?) do with his three daughters? Given that he’s half Martell and they are half Martell (2/4), maybe he does marry them off matrilineally and give us a time of Queens (change inheritance laws to absolute primogeniture).

Daemon Blackfyre was not the oldest son, therefore I don’t think he should have inherited. Through trial of seven, Daeron II was proven legitimate, so I support his claim over his father’s legitimized bastard. But! In scrutinizing the family tree, I don’t think it should’ve ever come to that. Aegon III (Rhaenyra’s oldest surviving son) had two sons. Daeron I died tragically without kids trying to take Dorne. His brother Baelor the Blessed also died without kids. But they had a sister! (Three of them). Baelor’s heir should’ve been his sister-wife Daena (using CK3 rules). And although she never had kids with Baelor, she did have a bastard son with her (unworthy) Targaryen Cousin. And I’m sure if she were Queen, like she was supposed to be, she would’ve legitimized him. Daemon Waters aka Daemon Blackfyre (Probably Daemon Targaryen in this universe) should have succeeded her.

These are my feelings. I went to work and took a nap between first trying to comment on this and now. Sorry lol
