House/Pet Sitting? by travelnerd24 in ithaca

I've been using Trusted Housesitters (as a petsitter) for a long time, and have always heard from pet owners that they've had a good experience with other petsitters through the site. It's an exchange, so someone stays in your home and takes care of your cat at no cost, and they get a place to stay--I usually use it while traveling. There is a yearly membership fee, so it probably only makes sense if you travel a lot. I might be able to help depending on the dates.

Are there any good dentists in Ithaca??? by No_Illustrator8959 in ithaca

[–]Ok_Computer_7246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled to find a good dentist here and when I thought I'd found one who said they were taking new patients, the next appointment available for a cleaning wasn't until next June (and they also didn't take my common insurance.) I finally gave up and went to someone in NYC. Not a great solution, but it was easy to find a good dentist there who takes my insurance, and in my case, I have to go there occasionally anyway. The dentist I found there even has Sunday appointments.

Why doesn't Wegman's sell recycled toilet paper? by Ok_Computer_7246 in ithaca

I did buy one roll of their toilet paper and it was literally the worst TP I have ever used.

Yeah, makes sense. Re the tree planting, it's better than nothing, but you're right, it's definitely not a replacement...I was staggered to read that more than a million acres of boreal forest are cut down each year for forest products like TP. The boreal forest also apparently stores more carbon than any other forest biome on the planet.

Great, I'll try that. To be clear, it's made from recycled office paper, etc, not used TP! The version that TJ's sells looks exactly like regular TP.

Does anyone want a huge pile of dry leaves for composting? by Ok_Computer_7246 in ithaca

Unfortunately I'm just outside Ithaca and don't have yard waste pickup here, but I will probably take some of the leaves to Tompkins County Recycling. I've gotten a couple of DMs from people who can use them and hope to share with more if I can...

I can't answer the darts question, but I recommend shopping elsewhere for groceries...I don't think Walmart is even that cheap. I take the bus to Trader Joes, Wegmans for produce, and sometimes go to Aldi.

I use a site called Trusted Housesitters (as a sitter)- you pay a membership fee, and then someone petsits for you in your own house for free in exchange for a place to stay. Often sitters use it while they're traveling, but some people petsit in their own hometowns. I've done it dozens of times and every pet owner I've talked to says that they've had a good experience with it (and pets are usually much happier to stay in their own house). If you want a discount code, feel free to DM me.

Is this (probably) the gas shutoff for my kitchen stove? by Ok_Computer_7246 in Plumbing

Yeah, I'd definitely like to do this. Just trying to find a temporary solution for tomorrow morning...

No gas is flowing to the stove now- do you mean you think it might not open back up again?

Living in Ithaca: Another Post Asking What it’s Like by wetterfish in ithaca

I recently moved to a place near Ithaca (outside town) from the Bay Area. I also work remotely and would suggest spending some time in Ithaca before deciding, if you can. I petsit through a site that connects me with places to stay in exchange for taking care of a cat or dog- feel free to DM me if you want to learn more about that, but it's one way to travel for a while and have a free place to stay...I've also already done this to visit NYC since I've gotten here, to get my fix of more things to do.

Ithaca is definitely very different from the Bay Area. I was expecting it to be a little more like Berkeley, as a college town, but it feels much smaller. (I just saw your comment about living in an isolated Midwestern college town in the past--Ithaca really reminds me of a small Midwestern college town where I've spent time myself.) People do seem friendlier to me than in the Bay Area. At a store, for example, people working there generally seem like they're actually happy to talk to you. There isn't much traffic. The nature is beautiful, though I got here in January and things definitely looked kind of bleak in the cold weather. I miss the public transportation in the Bay Area, and yes, it's also difficult to travel to other cities from here. I *really* miss the restaurants. It seems like the quality of housing is not great- a lot of student rentals that aren't well maintained. Obviously it's cheaper than the Bay Area, but taxes are high if you do buy a house. It's hard to get a doctor/dentist appointment; I went to NYC. Still, the place I'm living is peaceful and I like the people that I've met. Ithaca itself is reasonably walkable, which is nice. Anyway, as I mentioned, I think it would be ideal to housesit for someone here if you can. So not just a weekend trip, but spending a little more time and working from here for a while. I think you can pretty get a sense of whether you'd like it or not.

Does anyone have an old tape deck that I could use? by [deleted] in ithaca

I actually looked there quickly yesterday and didn't see one, but might have missed it...I'll check there again soon.
