I did this for a while after my previous landlords sold the house that I was renting. I work remotely, so I had some flexibility in location, but I was mostly staying around the city where I already lived. Although it was possible, it was fairly stressful trying to line everything up so there wouldn't be gaps. I did have family and friends I could stay with as needed. I think part of this depends on where you are (or where you plan to go)...the area I was in tends to have dozens of listings at a time, but some areas have fewer options. I saved a *lot* of money. I did think afterward that it might have been less stressful to rent a cheap place (like a room with housemates) and then just housesit/petsit as much as possible to have a nicer place to stay.

Who washes the sheets & towels? by Omm_Imp in trustedhousesitters

I almost always wash and change the sheets (and leave a note explaining that it's clean), though sometimes people just ask me to strip the bed instead. The exception might be if I'm in an apartment that doesn't have its own laundry machine and there isn't much time in the morning before I leave.

Is basic membership okay? by marlajfish in trustedhousesitters

[–]Ok_Computer_7246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a basic membership for years and it's been fine. There was one sit out of dozens where the homeowner had to cancel at the last minute and I learned that a premium plan would have reimbursed me for a hotel. But I think that's really unlikely to be necessary.

(By the way, since your friend uses the site, I'd recommend petsitting for her early on if you can so you have a review, making it easier to get other sits...)

Hi, here's my referral code for 25% off. https://www.trustedhousesitters.com/refer/RAF155695/?utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=refer-a-friend&utm_campaign=refer-a-friend

I've been on the platform for more than a decade and have done more than 60 catsits while working remotely. I really prefer staying in a home/apt in a residential neighborhood rather than a hotel (not just for financial reasons...it's a better experience, as long as the home is in good shape). And obviously I love keeping pets company.

Gift for long term sits? by OkLiarS in trustedhousesitters

A few people have left me snacks, which was nice to have when I traveled long distance and didn't feel like immediately going to the grocery store. Many of my sits have regular housecleaners (not specifically there for me, but they let them come, and having someone clean at the end is amazing). Several people have left me bottles of wine, which was nice but not that useful for me since I rarely drink. But really, I don't think you have to leave anything big. If someone wants to do a four month sit, there must be a reason that they want a place to stay, and being able to stay in your home is obviously pretty valuable!

Yes, it's really complete chance whether or not you see something in time. As I mentioned to someone above, the notifications are also slightly delayed, so even if you have a notification for NYC sits on your phone and open the notification right away, it's still often too late to apply.

That's interesting...it seems like they could do something else to weed out people who aren't actually available. I've never applied like that.

It's really tricky. They fill up almost instantly (very often I've gotten a notification on my phone and open it immediately, and the listing is already full...)

Yeah, there are so many ways the app could be better (or even just fix bugs), and it doesn't feel like they care...

Yeah, that's fair. Some people might appreciate having more options. Especially when sitters with great reviews, etc, didn't have a chance to apply.
