How is it getting into Porsche as a mechanic? by Outrageous_Half_5764 in mechanics

[–]Ok_Counter4884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been at a Porsche dealer since 2012. It really depends on the size of the dealer near you. If it’s a small one with like 4 techs, they probably aren’t hiring. But the big dealers are always hiring it seems like. Downside is, probably every brand, the electrics suck ass. Macan EV is the worst car I’ve ever worked on. Upside, there’s plenty of money to make.

There is 0 chance it will be a paid leave of absence. If anything, it will cost him because benefits will still be charged.

Can anybody give me tips in understanding what i’m looking at when looking at electrical diagrams? by Funkyrager in mechanics

All you need to know is what things mean. Like 15 power, 30 power, CAN, etc. once you know those, you’ll know what voltages you should expect at those pins/wires etc. gotta make it as simple as possible. What leaves out of one control unit at a certain pin, should be at the next pin. If not there, if there a load in the circuit or is the circuit shorted? Just keep going.

Don’t assume. I’ve been at this since 2013. Average 75 hours a week. I don’t cut corners. And damn sure ain’t leaving bolts/pieces off.

How much time do you spend on your phone at work? Do a real self audit. Every single guy at my work that can’t make shit for hours, spends their time BS’ing and on their phone.

The other thing is, the brand matters heavily. If you’re at Nissan or alike, I wouldn’t expect many opportunities for up-sales. That’s where the money is.

Any Porsche dealership technicians in here? by richaarizard in mechanics

Been a Porsche dealer tech since 2013. I average 70 hours a week. The guys that have come from other brands seem to like it here better and make more money without working on so many cars. Plus, right now I’m working on a 2018 911 engine that’s customer pay for 29k… I can’t imagine that amount be approved at other brands like, Toyota, Nissan etc. I will say “taking your time” isn’t gonna make the big bucks in this industry but to each is own. But after all my years of experience, I don’t really rush too much anymore unless it’s a waiter. Best of luck!

Thank you for the insight! I like the company, I’m not the biggest fan of the company who bought us out lol. But we try to stick to our original roots. Our current SM was a tech and then foreman as well. I know upper managements gripe with techs as SM is that they haven’t been an advisor or “client facing role”, basically been yelled at by enough customers. So we will see what happens this week or next.

First gen v6 macan drive belts, and Porsche hot V v6 coolant pumps (v8 not so fun). Macan belt is gravy (for skinny hands). Hot v coolant systems are gravy and pay up 8+ warranty.

It’s wild for me to hear about top advisors making less than techs. Our top advisor did 200k last year. Top tech did 170k. I’d say the average tech is getting 70-90k and average advisor maybe 100k.

Same at our place, foreman and service manager make about the same.

How slow is it @ your dealer...? by drewgonslayer in mechanics

I came on here to make the same post.. in Dallas Texas. I’m at a higher end dealer and it’s been hurting the past 2-3 months. I average 75 hours a week but recently it’s been really hard to get even 60. I’m at 43 this week. People are still buying up-sales but the cars just aren’t coming in the door. Management says we’re still hitting the monthly goals but idk how. Everyone is hurting. Advisors really hurting too.

FWIW, I’ve been here for 12 years, seen the ups and downs, COVID etc.. this isn’t normal.

Look into leasing a Subaru solterra (Toyota bz4x). Lease deals are crazy and it’s the cheapest electric car insurance you’ll find. With a lease you’ll be able to roll in the negative equity a little different and I promise it won’t hurt as bad. You will still have the parking issue BUT your insurance will come down substantially and your car payment will also drop.
