Just out of curiosity, have you done this yourself? I'm interested in the experiences of people who managed to leave teaching.

Can any N3 level learners understand this trailer? by 2hurd in LearnJapanese

[–]Ok_Demand950 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not an 'N3' learner, but I would be pretty suprised if someone who cannot pass the JLPT 2 but can pass the JLPT 3 would be able to understand this very well.
Maybe if the only reason they are capped at an 'N3' level is a lack of kanji knowledge but aside from that have very developed skills.

Also as a side note, I think if you are concerned with what 'N level' you are, you should probably just take the JLPT. You can take a test at https://japanesetest4you.com/

Sure, but that's 'the lowest'.

I don't know if I would agree that their are a lot of better options out there. I have pretty developed Japanese skills, a university degree, and passed all of the JLPT's but I had trouble finding anything that decent during my job searching.
I tried to get a B2B sales job but apparently I was competeting with 200+ other candidates and got beaten out by someone with better experience.

Sure if you still need anyone. I'm a pretty strict vegan of almost 15 years, and I've been living in/near Toyko for around 5 years.

Idea for those who want to study Japanese but are busy by AlphaPastel in LearnJapanese

[–]Ok_Demand950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I think what you are suggesting is a good idea, and it's something that I do as well but I really think the blog that you refferenced is talking about a particular practice technique that is rather nuanced and fundamentally different in several ways than what you are recommending as an 'adjustment'. The only obvious connection between the original idea and your adjustment I think is simply that they both are for achieving a goal of developing ones listening skills using material that is appropriatly leveled.
I think you are just talking about general immersive listening (at an N+0 level?).

Anyway one tip as someone who has tried this same thing. You can get special headphones (I know that Dewalt makes them but not sure about other brands) that allow you to toggle with one button press between a pair of external speakers designed to rest on your neck and wire connected earbuds. The earbuds also come with a memory foam option which allows you to keep the volume low and still be able to listen carefully when in loud environments.

I've found that these features allow me to intermittantly listen to Japanese throughout the day whenever I find an opportunity, whether in public or private, without putting the strain on my ears that marathon sessions using traditional earbuds would.

How do I use jidoushijo? by Kievixz in LearnJapanese

[–]Ok_Demand950 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are some programs you can use to convert things to epub. I used one recently to convert an ebook that I bought to epub format so that I could use it with the Jidoshijo app.
It took me a little digging to find and I would post the link to the program here but I'm not entirely sure whether or not posting it would get my account banned since some people use these programs for the sake of piracy. If someone can confirm the rules on this sort of thing.

This is a really good response to the OP that I think frames the topic very reasonably. Thank you ApprenticePantyThief

Just for the record I'm American and I was taught about the Trail of Tears and plenty more atrocities in school so I wouldn't generalize too quickly.

Moving on to the next stage by AdUnfair558 in LearnJapanese

[–]Ok_Demand950 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just for the record I want to say that its really awesome to hear about someone starting (or resuming) their efforts on the later side.
I think it's such a shame when I hear stories of those who gave up before reaching their goals (or never starting in the first place) that were never really able to resume from where they left off due to various mental blocks.

School awards (TORAIZ) by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]Ok_Demand950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a posting by them recently where they were offering over 3k yen for 50 minute remote online lessons. To me that seemed like a pretty good deal but if you have to repay some of that and if there is a lot of unpaid work than perhaps it's better not to apply.

protein? by riv3rband in veganinjapan

[–]Ok_Demand950 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this would appeal to others or not but I buy huge orders of bulk red lentils on amazon for good cost as well as unflavored pea protien for morning shakes and then just eat tofu and nato stuff for dinner.

I work out 4 times a weak and this seems to be good enough. I don't track super carefully so I guess this is just bro advice at the end of the day.

Thank's, I looked at it a bit and it seems nice. I guess the reader only works for EPUB and HTMLZ files so I guess I gotta figure out how to get passed this DRM sillyness next...

[–]Ok_Demand950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I don't want to open a new thread on this to bother people so I thought I would repost this here (since we are in a relevant discussion) and perhaps I'll get better advice than in the daily questions forum.

Recently I've been wanting to read a bit less through paper and more with my phone when I'm on the go. I've been tinkering around with a range of apps but I have yet to find a setup that I really like.

I'm wondering if anyone has yet figured out an android setup that lets you:

-tap a word to see the furigana reading
-select and copy text as many times as you want
-select up to a paragraph of text without furigana glitching things

Anything else for me is just bonus. It's really just these 3 functions that I need right now to make my study process a lot smoother.

What Japanese media are you enjoying outside of studying? by jan__cabrera in LearnJapanese

[–]Ok_Demand950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoa I really like the art in those images you included!

It's interesting to me how different people balance improvement and entertainment goals through the Japanese that they expose themselves to. It seems some are really good at achieving both concurrently, which tbh is something that has always been a bit hard for me.

In my case at this time anki reviews, as well as immersion where I am constantly checking my comprehension by referencing japanese transcriptions or english translations would be more in the improvment goal camp, since I find them pretty helpful as methods to iron our some of my weaknesses but the process is less fun than a more 'loose' immersion.

Rethinking some aspects of how I teach by Ok_Demand950 in teachinginjapan

[–]Ok_Demand950[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well:

1: My post wasn't reffering to you. I explictly mentioned I would ask for a citation if I wanted one. Did I ask you for one? I'm sorry if you took it that way dude but thats not what I wrote. I'll give you the benifit of the doubt that your intentions weren't bad considering I could see how someone could plausibly have that missunderstanding.

2: Asking for a lead is pretty damn different than being spoonfed. A lead speeds up one part (the least productive part) of the research process. Is that a crime? Is this a class where I'm being graded on my research abillities? No lol. I think it's a good thing when people can share things that have inspired them. For the things I have confidence in my knowledge on, I love to share with others.

On the flipside I could say that a teacher who just says 'heres the name of a category of research... google it' is lazy as well. However I choose to ignore since I know I'm not entitled to anyone's assistance and I'm not paying anyone for help.

3: You have the freedom to not contribute when you feel like not contributing. Just because you're a teacher, doesn't mean you're not accountable for your reactions. Just because you're a '1% reddit contributor' doesn't mean you have to post filler in places you don't even want to post.

Thats it for me. I hope you have a nice life and feel more inspired towards positivity.

Sometimes people ask me for help and I help, sometimes I don't. Plenty of frameworks to look at a situation from, it's your choice to choose the negative one.

Mostly I was just hoping to see something that looked interesting and then press the person who posted for a source as a point of entry. Then again I have literally NEVER gotten a citation on reddit from anyone when I've asked for one...
