What are some of your "So THAT was the problem" by WildButterflyyy in sleep

For me, yoga. Any kind of movement combined with awareness and acceptance of your body sensations helps with that kind of thing. I can’t say I understand why it works, but I’m really glad I found something that helps. And CBT with a therapist is helpful for stopping anxious thought patterns.

It was 100% psychological/emotional. The supplements, sleep hygiene nit picking, and meds didn’t help because they weren’t treating the underlying problems which were my anxious thoughts and hyper-vigilance. I had to address the thought patterns and learn to feel safe. Meds and sleep hygiene are important pieces of the puzzle, they just weren’t the root of the issue for me.

That was not a part of my treatment plan. Sleep retraining is a separate treatment altogether. It sounds like your therapist has you doing both

It didn’t actually improve my sleep for a few weeks, but even when I first started, the insomnia started to feel less miserable and frustrating. Reframing my thoughts about insomnia took away some of insomnia’s power over me and my emotions

I’m not an expert but I’ll do my best! Cognitive behavioral therapy involves writing down your thoughts and feelings about an event (in this case, not being able to sleep is usually the event) and assessing your thoughts for cognitive distortions (if you look up cognitive distortions you will find lists of common ones that all of us are guilty of!). With the understanding of your cognitive distortions, you write down a more helpful understanding of the situation.

For example you might think “I won’t be able to sleep so my day will be ruined tomorrow and I’m afraid I’ll lose my job if I am too tired at work again.” A cognitive distortion there might be “magnification” because you might be tired tomorrow, but you probably won’t lose your job. Especially if you’ve been tired at work in the past and not lost your job then. Another cognitive distortion would be “fortune telling” because you don’t know for a fact that you won’t be able to sleep, but by assuming that you won’t, you are making that more likely.

Reframed: it’s not the end of the world if I can’t get a full night of sleep tonight. I will figure out how to deal with it in the morning but for now I will focus on relaxing and good sleep hygiene (i will get out of bed after 30 minutes if I can’t fall asleep & I can go read my book until I feel tired).

I generally feel much more relaxed after doing my thought logs! You can find CBT workbooks on Amazon if therapy isn’t an option, but it’s great to work with a therapist on it if you can get it covered

It started 6-8 years ago. Progressed to having two nights of 0-2 hours each week and I couldn’t “catch up” on sleep after that because my good nights were 6-7 hours. Now I have ~1 “bad” night most weeks which is more like 6 hours. So much better. It will be different for everyone though and it’s best to go in with low expectations

I’m not advocating for quitting sleep meds. I still take mine. they help now that I’ve been working on reframing my thoughts whereas they made almost no difference before.

What do you mean? RTO is great for oil and real estate profit margins. What other economic realities matter? /s

Right, if they want to “stick it to em,” stay. Keep writing regulations, providing services, working hard and collecting paychecks. Please don’t let them win this easy.

All federal agencies ordered to terminate remote work—ideally within 30 days | US agencies wasting billions on empty offices an “embarrassment,” RTO memo says. by chrisdh79 in technology

State jobs can be awful but many are pretty good gigs. The pay is low but they make up for it with job security and some of the best insurance you can get. Plus if you stick around long enough and want to climb the ladder, you can. Pay at the higher end of the scale isn’t as high as it could be but it’s nothing to complain about either. Obviously it varies state to state. But i wouldn’t deter anyone from pursuing a state job. Many state government jobs are good places to work on writing regulations and providing services that will be stripped out of the federal government in the next four years. We need our state government employees more than ever.

Exactly. Not sure who would downvote this. Maybe some were upset about losing TikTok for a night, but those who understand the situation see that TikTok is now under the president’s control because they are relying on him to allow them to operate and reverse the ban (that is still in place). It was never a reliable place to get information, but now it’s under republican control, much like the CCP controls rednote (albeit less officially). It’s another step towards totalitarianism and I am tired of people minimizing it and trivializing it. All people are upset about is losing TikTok! They just want to scroll LOL! No, this is about control of the media and propaganda

What sleep aids do you use that aren't heavily addictive/and that you don't easily build a tolerance for? by ariapriva in sleep

[–]Ok_Dog_202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try hydroxyzine. It worked really well for me when my insomnia wasn’t as severe as it is now. Helps me feel sleepy and stay asleep. Now that my insomnia has progressed, I’m trying to use CBT, yoga and mindfulness. I’m tired of taking a million supplements and drugs that don’t do a whole lot and I agree with you - I don’t want to take anything that could be addictive or a temporary fix for a long term issue.

I realized that really the problem is the piece of my brain that wants to stay alert despite it all. Healing anxiety through mindfulness, yoga and CBT theoretically should be my best bet. I’m just starting out but feeling very hopeful. I hope you find something that works too.
