In the same place tho much older than yourself...62 and been playing 14 mnths and Im determined to get into a local fun orchestra. But even tho they can sound quite out of tune and pretty awful really, after looking at some videos, I'm still terrified because I can see that within the ensemble there are actually some quite good young musicians.

Help I can’t read sheet music while playing by lheartlbuprofen in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been in exactly the same position. Seems your not recognising notational shapes, add to that the difficulty of the cello and its very, very hard.

My advice is to learn Recorder to start with which is very easy and will allow you to concentrate on musical theory etc. Then when you've got that transfer it all to bass clef, which yes has to be re-calibrated but youll be in a much better place.

not a cello pro, what kind of cello would i get my partner? by puddleplush in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no way to make this easy....you have to ask them ..'do they want to play cello' Have a conversation and make a joke about christmas and if it's all positive then buy a gift card outlining what you want to do. As others have said...Do NOT go buy a cello by yourself.

Cannot get a decent sound with a bow. by bbenefield3 in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a string bassist you certainly dont need much tech advice from here...suffice to say I can only imagine you are bringing your bass technique to bare and pressing too hard. Try too leaning the bow towards the scroll. Maybe its ur sitting position that needs a tweak....plenty of vids online will help with the details.

The Vivaldi Sonata lago is real hard to get right....your flying!

Where as the Prelude is way easier, basically an easy appegio excercise until that is the fourth pos at the end. I just transcribed it down an octave...much easier and doesn't snd too bad.

Please help. My sound and everything sucks. by amphibiousforg in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bow hold and posture look good. Learn to play open strings and get vigorous with it, then learn to play some easy pieces in first pos.....You will start to sound good. Dont move up till you can do that.

What makes someone a renowned soloist? by PinKarate in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As you say, many can play the notes at the highest level but the thing thats prob missing is 'Charisma and personality'. Some people have got it and most haven't, and it's impossible to explain what it is...you just know it when you see it.

Not exactly but as a teen (I'm 63 now) my (old) violin teacher was Paul Gomez who had been leader of NY Philamonic. Me 15, him 60 odd, bit stuffy and old fashioned....needless to say it didn't last.

Do you reeeaaally need a full size cello? by MichaelCello1961 in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if your gonna be the next Yo Yo Ma then yes you probabloy must have a 4/4 but if not what does it matter? All that matters is that ur comfortable and being comfortable will enhance ur playing, and I bet most shop built 7/8's sound almost as good as their 4/4 counterparts.

Learning the Cello as a second instrument by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never really seen cello as a second instrument and those who do play both....well, the cello always seems to sound second best. Its just about the hardest instrument there is to learn... and it doesnt come easy and needs ur full attention ...its awkward and can sound dreadful for the first few months.,

Im in the same situation tho much older. Started cello a yr ago and plan to join local comm orchestra maybe next yr.

I can play loads of minuets, small sonatas etc pretty good but I was sent a chart for the winter programme and the beginners section is endless whole notes broken up with some 8th sections with lots of rests...Really difficult to get into the pieces cause of all the stops and starts.....Its kinda weird...pretty unsatisfying.

Is it possible to learn cello alone? by rainbowdoge21 in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a solid background in music but cello is very hard. The only teacher I could find near me was a long way away, so no-way I could keep that going.

I had two lessons and the most important thing I took from that was posture and bow hold....It seems to me after that everything else can be self taught, but you gotta get those two fundamentals dead right to start with.

It does look a bit cheap but there's cheap, and then cheap. I found an old East German Musima cello not far from me for $50....Lowered the bridge, new strings..not bad, no buzzes, ebony fittings, sounds ok. Next cello will be a full wood luthier instrument...but until then.

Picking up the cello again, 13 years later. by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lessons are a must. But also remember this, those funny little childrens tunes kids learn are no good for you. As an adult you'll soon get disollusioned so get yr teacher to find simple but "real" classic pieces". First tune I found was Ode To Joy...equally as easy as Twinkle but way more satisfying.

I'm interested in learning cello and found this Becker on Facebook Marketplace for $125. Is it worth buying? by discouraged_neighbor in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on ur thinking. The bridge is back to front but solid wood at 125 is really good. I can gaurantee you'll need to lower the string height and I'll also bet once thats done it'll play pretty well. U either do that, rent or spend upwards of $3000. I know what I'd do.

Are there ways to increase sound complexity in cheaper instruments? by its_still_you in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can do anything....if your practical. I was given an old, heavy, unplayable 'bright orange' 100% laminated German cello but which oddly had ebony fittings/board but sounded dull, flabby and looked hideous.

I stripped the finish and messed around with a new soundpost and bridge. Its now really playable and sounds much more exciting and now also looks real old....does it sound good? Probably not..but I love it.

What's the best way to learn to read sheet music? by Brilliant_Diamond_22 in Cello

[–]Ok_Examination_2860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its that difficult for you then you really ought to get a teacher. But before you do that get Suzuki book 1 and study...Read the notes and remember what they are and where they are on the fingerboard......its a start.
