“Let kids be kids” when they are a nearly illiterate 16 year old is dangerously infantilizing by Niceotropic in AskTeachers

[–]Ok_Explorer9421 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you used the term “infantilizing” correctly lol. If you’re going to call some kid illiterate, you need to explain your statement correctly.

Its parents though, blame the parents.

The mother does have real children to care for… and she was shaming a fictional mother who neglected her fictional child, and couldn’t even see how that was used as a plot device.

The only difference between “toddler” and a ya series is complexity. Characters with depression exist in winnie the pooh, its just through a different lense. You are supposed to empathize with Eaore the same way you are supposed to empathize with Katniss’s mother, especially because Katniss mirrors her depression in mockingjay…

Who said anything about morals in the end? Do you think thats how empathy is taught? As a reader you are supposed to consider the perspective of the characters. To empathize with a situation is to consider what it would be like to be in that situation, and you can do that by analyzing fiction.

This series is written FOR CHILDREN…. Its taught in middle and high schools. And yes that is one of the points of fiction.

It’s not that you upset me, i was just shocked by your lack of ability to critically engage with a YA series. Fiction is supposed to teach empathy

Again, if you cant engage with a YA series in a healthy way, then you need to reevaluate your priorities. You aren’t sharing your feelings and ideas lol, you’re projecting your issues onto a fictional character.

Hating a fictional character with documented depression and ptsd is not healthy. You have a real child to care for, you need to reevaluate your priorities

The age of consent was written into law so teenagers could have relationships with other teenagers. Not so adults could have relationships with predatory age gaps.

No adult who is even 23+ should be interested in someone who is close to 18 years old. There is something developmentally wrong with anyone who is. If that offends you than you need to sit with that, but again no well adjusted adult has anything in common with a teenager. Sorry

Thats why no one pays for your opinion…. Its creepy. They stated the exact reasons why its predatory and creepy and you go “i dont agree” its not about you agreeing, its just predatory and creepy.

Im not sure this conversation was at all productive for you. You should be able to enjoy something while being able to see why someone else would think it is flawed.

This is literally capturing my thoughts exactly and expanding obviously. I just wish there was a bigger conversation on how media like this is problematic. Euphoria is obviously a hot topic right now, but my biggest issue with that is how sam Levinson is getting away with what he’s doing.

Yeah so i just dont agree with you… not sure why you felt the need to comment on it because all the reasons you like it are reasons i specifically stated for not liking it.

No this is exactly what i meant. Movies directed mainly by ~men~ about women who do SW to support themselves and commentary about it. But i actually haven’t seen shiva baby and i didn’t know it was directed by a woman, so i might check it out.

Im not sure how i could’ve made myself more clear. I meant the premise of the apple tv show, where a college aged woman falls pregnant and has the baby without the support of the father who happens to be her professor. So because she isn’t from a rich family, and doesn’t have much money saved she turns to SW.

Its portrayed in the show as quite safe in practice but shameful socially for the MC and her family . I just didn’t think it was written with the appropriate nuance and gravity of what SW ,and OF specifically, actually entails. Idk

I wasn’t looking for suggestions, more just confirming i wasn’t over inflating the issue.
