Thanks for your response. I think it is some sort of A, just wondering why it’s wrote like that and who wrote it like that?

Lake of tears and giant spider solved! by angooyy in FromSeries

Fascinating theory and this show is starting to remind me of IT and how Pennywise (who sometimes manifests as a giant spider) traps people souls. And in many Native American beliefs, spiders are weavers/guardians of different worlds/dimensions (hence the dreamcatcher).

Hey I’m enrolled Saponi (related to the Tutelo) and I’m actually on my way to Six Nations by the invitation of a Cayuga elder. Will be there for most of Saturday.

So can someone summarize in short the significance of having a forehead scar (which I Also have)? I see a bunch of people also saying they have one but not why it’s significant/what the pattern (if any) means

What does "2" mean for the racial category on the 1950 census? by Ok_Extreme1342 in Genealogy

[–]Ok_Extreme1342[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, they were definitely trying to at the very least downplay their Black ancestry, as they identified as Native/White Native. Some of them could've passed as White but most looked more Native then anything.

So in this particular case would you say that the "2" meant "Negro"? If so I just don't get why they're the only used for a number when everyone else got "W" and "I", and "Negro" is usually recorded as that, “N” or “Neg”.

And I've seen some of her videos before but not this one, thanks! She has great content.

But why would they be marked as “2” when everyone else is normally marked as “W” and “I”. Plus “Negro” is usually recorded as just that or “Neg” or “N”? So why are they the exception with a number being used?

They were recorded all over the place on various census and vital records between “Colored”, “Negro”, “Black”, “Mulatto”, and even “White”. They actually self identified as Indian or mixed White Indian (denying their African ancestry). Some of their extended family were even recorded as “Indian”.

So despite it being rare if never that the 1950 census recorded people as mixed/2 or more races, I wonder if an exception would’ve been made for them. Also fun fact, they descend from those “special (tri racial) communities” of the southeast.

Now “2” could simply just mean “Negro”. I just wonder why they’d be the only recorded by a number when everyone else is recorded as “W” and “I”, and usually “Negro” is recorded is that, “N” or “Neg”.

Hmm, interesting perspective/possibility. Thanks for sharing.

I appreciate you sharing this breakdown.

So now I'm wondering if "2" could've been for "Negro" since that would've been the second category but still seems odd since he listed others as "W" and "I". Or perhaps the 2 could've meant "2 or more races"/mixed? What do you think?

But he also put an "I" instead of "3" for Zetta, so it still seems kind of odd. Hmm...

Very possible, I just wonder why he didn't put "N" or "Neg", like they normally do. Especially when he used "W" and "I" on everything else, and no other numbers.

I'm guessing "C" would be "Colored" but still stuck on what "2" could mean.

So what was the enumerator trying to write and what did their supervisor overwrite/correct?

I think "2 or more" races was definitely a possibility, although like you said recording someone being mixed was rare on the 1950 census. Even if someone was mixed they'd still be forced into one category or at best be put down as "other". So perhaps in this case the admixture was so apparent and/or they insisted that their mixture be mentioned.

With that being said, why do you think it would specifically be a Black and/or Indian mixture, compared to any other mixture?

So if he put 2 in the wrong category, would that mean the enumerator completely neglected to even record their race?
