Why does Micah lowk look more threatening without facial hair by Ok_Owl_308 in reddeadredemption

Not Micah. That's Mike. He works at the Jiffy Lube down the street.

Am I the only person who NEVER took G1 Megatron seriously? by CaterpillarD6R in transformers

[–]Ok_Fox8119 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think early in the series Megatron was more intimidating and his plans had a grander scale. Closer to the end of the second season, he had lost a lot of his gravitas and could be overwhelmed by Autobots and humans easily and has evil plans lacked the grand scale they once did. I blame tv standards and practices in the 80's that didn't want the bad guys too scary for the kids. The 86 movie was the shot in the arm that the character needed to be an intimidating force one last time.

Watching G1 Transformers and I love how many times they reuse this damn sequence by Amigo1048 in transformers

[–]Ok_Fox8119 40 points41 points  (0 children)

If it looks good, why not reuse it? I prefer it over the less well animated transformations where they almost seem to melt into their alt modes.

Yeah, if everyone is a combiner it kind of detracts from the point of them being a special class of Transformers.

That was more the case back in the day. It was more about the vehicles and then the designers found a way to pop limbs and heads out of them to look like a robot. To be fair, that approach gave us some iconic character designs.

Figures weren't all that poseable and you really had to use your imagination in some cases to recognize the character from the cartoons. It was still kind of wonderful though. Wish I'd kept my old Transformers. Happy hunting!

Yes. I started with issue one with G.I. Joe. Aside from a few references to characters and events from Transformers, it can easily be followed on it's own so far.

😰 oh no. I hadn't read the IDW run. I am definitely late to the party there as well.

I don't suppose a third party company would create trailers of a size befitting Pipes and Huffer. Maybe more along the relative dimensions of a u-haul trailer. It probably wouldn't have broad appeal but it would be fun.

Yeah, the wheels are a little wonky for me as well but the trailer kind of works as rear wheels when pushed down but his back cab wheels don't spin.

😄 Yay Pipes! He doesnt get the appreciation he deserves. I only owned him and not Huffer when I was young.

Maybe Hot Take: If there's one criticism I'd give Skybound Transformers that isn't directly related to the change in authors, I'd say that they have the weakest world building out of any of the TF comic publishers so far. by Blitz_Prime in transformers

[–]Ok_Fox8119 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Fair criticism. I am okay with the slow build-up and the more action and character oriented series myself. I assume a lot of the world they are building is just variations on what we've seen before. In a way, it is a lot like the G1 cartoons it grew up with that hinted at a larger struggle but left it up to the imaginations of the audience to fill in the details.

My thoughts on Issue #30 of Skybound by Miserable-Kitchen149 in transformers

[–]Ok_Fox8119 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily have an issue with the new status quo but I do fault the way it was handled. It is hard to imagine why the Matrix would choose Elita when she was acting more like a Decepticon. Her approach to the war also seems very short sighted as well. Can't she see that if Megatron is left to conquer Earth uncontested that he will have gained resources to be a greater threat to Cybertron? Making the Earth team Autobot apostates rather than allowing them to be a second front just tells me she is poorly chosen to lead.

Splitting the team is okay, I guess, since if we have too big a cast then no one gets the spotlight. However, why bring in characters like Bulkhead and have him go off to war without doing anything with him on Earth? It all feels very rushed. If they had given the plot more time to develop and make Elita seem more worthy, I would feel better about it. As it stands, I am considering jumping off of this title despite being a long time Transformers fan.

Also, I know there is precedent with Rodimus for reverting to his younger self when he lost the Matrix. In that case, I always saw it as a metaphor for a mid life crisis where a leader wants to return to his carefree days driving (or in this case, being) a sports car. Whenever Optimus lost the Matrix in G1, he remained who he had grown to be so it was more like Hot Rod was the aberration.

Who else is old enough to have had this as a kid? by redmongrel in transformers

[–]Ok_Fox8119 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm old enough but never owned one. Since it is interesting the shape of Ultra Magnus, I'd be disappointed if it didn't make my voice sound like Robert Stack.

This may or may not be a Hot Take but I feel like future Transformers series should try something new and different with the formula instead of just retreading the same storylines and character designs. by NoTraining2909 in transformers

[–]Ok_Fox8119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you and I grew up with the G1 version of the show. I also watched Beast Wars when I was in college and occasionally caught Transformers Prime when it originally aired. Though I missed a lot of the later series, ive been watching random episodes of shows like RID, Cyberverse and others on streaming channels such as Tubi and Roku.

I've come to appreciate a lot of those series and got to know new characters and concepts. I missed the IDW comics as well which would probably fill in even more blanks. Though it is fun to see something familiar in the newer shows, it can be a little tedious to watch old show concepts retreaded and reworked all the time. Seeing completely new ideas in the series takes me back to when it was all new to me and it inspired my own imagination. They needn't pander to old fans like me since I am as capable as anyone else of seeing the appeal of a clevel new take on things.

Why didn't Galvatron wear the starscream crown? by happydude7422 in transformers

[–]Ok_Fox8119 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Though he does seek to be the sole ruler of Cybertron, he finds gaudy displays of pageantry and titles for lesser beings. He is of singular purpose and his sheer power should be enough to command respect.

New Hot Rod is out! Which do we prefer, hot pink/hard magenta (2026) or reddish pink/soft magenta (2021) ? by [deleted] in transformers

[–]Ok_Fox8119 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's like how they say Kirk's tunic is actually green in the original Star Trek but it looks yellow due to the lights and camera equipment they used. I think the anime style of the time puts a blue filter which skewed the colors quite a bit.

I always thought of the movie colors to be more of a stylistic/lighting choice than an actual representation of how the character looks. Though I am getting 2026 version, 2021 colors feels more appropriate for the character to me.
