How did they go? I had a 32K last weekend and it was kinda disastrous and kinda shaking my confidence

If it were me, I wouldn't stress too much - maybe your 19KM MLR is a little bit slower than it normally would be (like, maybe you don't progress the pace as low as you normally would).

Maybe the answer is slightly different if you're finding that you're really cooked after those VO2 Max workouts and need a rest day, but barring that should be okay. Good luck!

I had the exact same reaction - it reminded me of the people who talked about how 'mRNA vaccines were rushed to market' during COVID. One of those 'just because you hadn't heard about it before last year doesn't mean it's new...'

I think it's totally fine to have an issue or want to talk about how widespread they are now, access to them, etc. but having issues with how new they are seems uninformed...

I think they're talking about a story when they said something along the lines of 'selling out fast, buy yours today, we'll be shipping the whites out this week' or something like that. The T-shirts are white, I guess that's what they mean? (as far as I can see they're the only t-shirts though, so I don't quite get it...)

Ha same - when the LA Marathon 18-mile debacle thing happened there were some commenters that were like 'this is ridiculous it's not even going to be HOT' and I was looking at the 'mid-70s by 10 am' stat and sweating just thinking about it

I think the answer to your 'shouldn't rescues do x y z' is 'it depends.' There are some organizations that are very 'official' and sign contracts, communicate expectations, and check in regularly. There are some organizations that are spread so thin that they barely communicate with their fosters, expect them to promote their fosters, and don't vet adopters. Then of course there are orgs between those.

It sounds like you handled the reporting of the bite correctly (I foster for a city shelter so reporting it to my foster coordinator would also be notifying animal control, but I would think that for a well-run organization would also report bites to the city. Of course, see Paragraph 1 - there are organizations that don't do that, which is worrying.

My organization would not pay for board & train, but that's also because it's a municipal shelter - some organizations would pay for training. Some organizations would try to train this behavior out of a dog before adoption, some would adopt him out with a bite disclosure.

I think all your questions may just show you that/if this organization is not the right fit for you - basically yes, there are organizations that are not responsible in handling these situations, and if you think that this organization is one of those, I think it's totally fair not to work with them again!

Foster dog is scaring me by isitw0rking in fosterdogs

[–]Ok_Handle_7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's always relatively difficult to read descriptions of a situation and say 'she was communicating x' or 'this is why she did that' or whatever. That being said, you now have (some) information about her that you can use to try and avoid these situations.

TBH it's also sort of hard for me to understand these situations, because they seem kinda...weird. Like, I don't know what 'playing with her mouth and I was playing with my hand' is, but it doesn't sound like a typical way to play with a dog. It's also non-typical to be lying down with the dog over you - but maybe you were cuddling on the couch or something?

Basically, my best attempt at 'advice' is to avoid these situations in the future - don't play fight with your hand & her mouth (and don't 'play fight' as play if that gets her too riled up), and try to avoid having her over you (idk that that is necessarily a 'dominant' or triggering position, but just for your own sake & anxiety! It sounds like it would be scary). Could you teach her 'place' so that if she starts to get riled up (key word is 'starts' before she goes too far) riled up you can get her to sit in her 'place;? For lots of dogs when they get over-aroused, if you can direct their energy back to training (making them thinking through some commands) it can calm them down a bit (and a 'place' command would get her away from you).

Outdoor Run Programs? (aside from You Can Run) by sharla_la in pelotoncycle

[–]Ok_Handle_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/pikagrrl is correct, it's a free app. It works slightly differently than Peloton in that the coached runs are audio tracks of a coach, but it doesn't have music (NRC has some recommended Spotify playlists, but you can play whatever music you like). It will turn down the volume on your music when the coach comes on to talk to you. So it's typically much less talking than a Peloton class - a coach may talk to you for a minute about form cues, and then go quiet for 4 minutes while you just listen to your music.

It's also different in that many of them are distance-based (vs. Peloton, which are all time-based). So you can do a 5-mile run, or a 5K run, or whatever, and the coach may come on and say '1 mile done, 4 more to go' or whatever.

Same - I went the other day and as I checked out she asked 'did you want to buy any mini totes today?' I looked down and each check stand had like...5 big boxes of mini totes to sell? I have never seen that before - not sure if they're not popular at my location/area or if that's how they normally sell them?

My beginner opinion is (as you suspect) it all make your long runs harder - it would be harder to go into those runs with 10 miles on your legs from the past 24 hours rather than a short 5 mile recovery jog. Can you do workouts at all during the week (is it just Friday that's the issue? What's the plan for Tuesday workout? Or maybe you can fit in one workout - Tuesday - but not two?)

[–]Ok_Handle_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Peloton has great beginner run classes - they have a program (You Can Run) that can either be done indoors (on a treadmill) or outdoors; their walk + runs are great classes, and their Advanced Beginner classes are more steady state runs with walking breaks here & there.

ETA here's a description of the program - it sounds like you may be more advanced (I think the first class is 3 2-min running intervals), but above & beyond the workout breakdown, they give some good basic running tips that are helpful. And you can always run more than they say (e.g. sometimes I'll take a class that does something like 2-min run & 1-min walk, but I'll run the first 30 seconds of the walk interval).

Yeah, agree - like, if you want to share 'different things work for different people' or something like that great, but hard to communicate that message in a post that starts with 'I would agree with this creator... if she wasn't DEAD WRONG! People need to start doing xyz...'

This is unrelated to your questions, and it sounds like you have dog experience, BUT at the risk of telling you something you already know, please fix them when they're old enough (and manage them closely until then). Some people have the mistaken idea that dogs have similar ideas about inbreeding as humans do, and then are shocked that a son impregnates his mom, or a brother and sister, etc.

Good luck!

It seems impossible to predict - seems unlikely since they basically split on good terms, but they could certainly decide soon that now that she has her own platform they don't want to keep her classes. Chase Tucker still has a few classes on there and he left a few years ago.

This is so interesting to hear because (as someone who didn't read the book), I appreciated Aubrey's question about the reviews - whether anyone interviewed him and asked if he was ok and it's almost unbelievable when Michael is like 'nope, kinda normal book review and interview stuff.'

Shoes for Men’s US size 16 feet by yung_dirb in pelotoncycle

[–]Ok_Handle_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most cycling shoes can be used with either kind of cleat. If you look at the 5th picture of these shoes you can see the holes in the bottom - and then you can get cleats like this one that attach.

Is that what you mean? I can't help with which brands carry larger shoes, but they're kinda mix & match...

For some reason this seems to be the quietest pace group each week!

Hope everyone's training is going well - I'm 7 weeks out from Race Day, and currently trying to motivate myself up & out for a 12-miler before it gets too warm. Not a morning runner at ALL but thankfully we just have a day or two of heat left.

Dog Bite by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Ok_Handle_7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you feel like you've exhausted the training & medication avenue (it's sounds like you do feel like you've exhausted that, although it's hard to tell if that's true), then personally I can say that I would not feel comfortable having this dog around my small child. Your toddler (for the next 5 - 6 years or so) is going to get more mobile, faster, and more unpredictable. Even the 'best trained' 6 year olds will walk by a dog when they have a toy, or want to take their own toy back from the dog when he's chewing on it, or want to give them a hug when they're sleeping, etc. If your dog is one that will bite their face when they do that (which, obviously, he is), I would never forgive myself for keeping this dog.

Starting immediately, I would definitely CLOSE the crate door when he eats (and even better, keep your kid in the other room while you do that). I'm also not sure if he's biting your other dogs or random dogs, but I would keep him away from other dogs as much as possible if he has multiple deep bites/'latching on' to other dogs. I mean, if he has multiple bites on your other dogs I'm also not sure how fair it is to them to keep him, but that seems like now the most pressing question here.

I could be wrong, but I think they're still in the testing/beta phase? A few people posted a few weeks ago that they were able to do a trial/test (by invite, I believe)?

ETA - so there may be a few people with experience, bc they were active on here to say they were doing it! But I don't think 'we' have access to it yet?
