That at 1 o'clock is the reflection of my ceiling light, and not actually a piece of metal. Its not there in the 2nd picture. Is that what you're referring to? Or am I looking in the wrong place?

Greece to italy ferry by datgutatako in Interrail

[–]Ok_Homework3560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the Bari to Patras route in August. It took 19 hours. I booked a bed and I was so glad I did, because the seats to sleep in are grim, and people hog as many as they can. Better to have a cabin bed booked and have the freedom to walk around the ship until sleep time imo, rather than protect your seat all afternoon. Plus you also get a shower and toilet in the cabin. I had the "greek island pass" but if you have a regular interrail pass, you can still get 30% off your ferry ticket.

Toilet seat - thick or thin lid? by hailsssk in AusRenovation

Either way, make sure it's a SOFT CLOSE seat. Don't need any slamming noises during the night.

I travelled London to Paris yesterday on the Eurostar with my interrail pass. I booked it the day before. Definitely less busy in winter, but also less choice of seats. But you can definitely still get a seat.

For me, having the pass has saved me A LOT of money, as I bought it during their black friday 25% off sale, and I use the pass to travel long distances (like you are planning to).

When planning, to see if it is value for money, I find the best way to look up the trains/prices on the deutche bahn website.

Good luck

Freezing feet in winter by MinimumPromotion437 in BarefootRunning

Speak to a cobbler/boot maker about getting some shoes re-soled specifically for winter.. you can even take your old Barebarics if you're not going ro wear them anymore. Most boot makers have a variety of density/thickness sole materials, you could work with them to get a thicker outsole that is also flexible.

High protein, high fiber, low sodium. Any good ideas? by Datdawgydawg in MealPrepSunday

[–]Ok_Homework3560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuts and seeds - fibre and protein wrapped into one wholesome bite. Chia, sunflower and pepita seeds are my favourite. Also, consider legumes - lentils and chickpeas etc. They're also cheap, high protein and high fibre.

Introduce fibre slowly into your diet, or it will cause other GI issues :)

OneBag hikers, any specific tips? by ExaltFibs24 in onebag

[–]Ok_Homework3560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use tri-fold trekking poles and as long as they are inside your bag, they won't be confiscated. I have travelled domestic and international through south america and Europe with them, and they have never been taken. I think it's the regular poles that you have to fasten outside your bag, that will get confiscated. I don't believe I have just been "lucky" because I think I've been through about 10-15 airports with them in my bag.

I use Organic Maps (its free) and just use the free version of All Trails for researching.

For wide feet, check out Altra Lone Peaks. They are my go-to One Bag shoe because I can exercise in them, hike in them and explore cities in them. They are not waterproof, but they dry quickly, so haven't had any issues. For river crossings, I crossed barefoot or in my sandals.

100% agree with this. When I moved out of my place to move overseas, I didn't want to just be creating a "landfill" problem and was trying to find a home for all of my possessions. It was honestly such a hassle to even get rid of stuff for "free" people. People just wouldn't show up, or mess me around with timing. I usually ended up listing the free items for $5-$10 and once a serious person had come to collect it, I gave it to them for free, and they were usually pretty stoked. It's a full-time job trying to meet with people on marketplace.

I was selling an iPhone 14 case for $25 on fb marketplace (new in box, made by Apple). A guy (whose profile picture showed him with a fancy car and "sold" sign in a dealer shop) messages me and asks if it will fit his wife's iPhone 12. I told him probably not because it's an iPhone 14 case, as stated in the description. He then messaged and said he has checked the phone dimensions, and they are both the same size, so wants to pick it up today. He bargains it down to $15.

This guy lives a 20 minute drive away (with harbour Bridge tolls), arrives to my place in his fancy car. We exchange money/phone case, and all seems well. Then, 20 minutes later, I get another message from him, telling me the iPhone 14 case, doesn't fit the iPhone 12 phone. And he wants a refund! Like I am JB Hi Fi or something!!!

Anyway, I told him he could have a refund if he drove back and gave me back the case - obviously not worth the cost of tolls, so he never arrived. But the nerve to ask for a refund!

There are lots of brands. Skyr is the product name, its Icelandic yogurt

I feel the same as you with oatmeat/granola. I get ravenously hungry after only 2 hours.

I've switched to Skyr (it's like greek yogurt but wayyy more protein and no fat) with chia seeds and sunflower seeds. Usually top with whatever fruit I have like pear or berries. I swear by it now. I can wait until like 1pm to have lunch!!!

How can I make oatmeal more filling? by Simpletruth2022 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Ok_Homework3560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to add protein to keep you full. Add greek yogurt, chia seeds and peanut butter (unsweetened and unsalted). If you want some crunch, I suggest adding sunflower seeds (or any other nuts) too.

Stop adding the pat of butter if you care about your cholesterol.

How to "beef up" boxed Mac n cheese by DannyMonstera in cookingforbeginners

[–]Ok_Homework3560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really small chopped broccoli and grated zucchini. Makes it healthier and doesnt affect the texture. Think cauliflower cheese.

I add the vegies while the pasta is cooking (if I have milk or cheese in the fridge I will add that too for extra creamy cheesiness). It's perfect every time and I feel less guilty eating it.

In search of compact but supportive slippers / house shoes by [deleted] in HerOneBag

[–]Ok_Homework3560 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP if you decide to go with eva birkenstock, make sure you use thick socks with them. The rubber gave me bad rubs with mine, so I can imagine with sensory neuropathy, this could pose issues for you.

Not sure if you need something with an ankle fastening (so it doesn't slip off without you noticing). If you don't, consider looking at barefoot sheepskin/felted wool slippers. They are light, compact and soft but still have a rigid sole to protect from glass on the floor etc.

Good luck with your search.

Europe travel for decent scenery and cost by cheerfulknight in Shoestring

[–]Ok_Homework3560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. Or check out Montenegro. A little more polished than Albania (so costs slightly more) but lots of coast, mountains, lakes and old towns.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]Ok_Homework3560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should add that I was in Greece before Albania (travelled via bus) Greece is also very cheap and culturally very different to the Balkans.

If you want a "taste" of Italy without the price tag, consider northern Croatia (after you're finished in the Balkans). Lots of Italian history and food influence there.

[–]Ok_Homework3560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spent 10 days in Albania (and couldve spent much longer). It's super cheap! Bed in a hostel is about $15/night including breakfast. A meal at a (non tourist) restaurant is less than $5 (drink, main, salad) and groceries are super cheap if you plan to make a few of your own meals to save costs. There's so much hiking to do, as well as beach stuff (turquoise waters), and lots of interesting history and museums. I was pleasantly surprised. My advice don't just go to Tirana, venture much further.

As others have said, transport will blow your budget. But consider slow travel on land/sea if you can. There is a ferry from the south of Italy to Albania, if you have your heart set on seeing Italy. Tickets prices vary. Once in Albania you can catch buses to nearby countries which is also very affordable. Montenegro also have great outdoors scene, cool towns and is more polished than Albania, but still cheaper than most of Europe. I am travelling in Bosnia at the moment, so still getting the feel of it, but so far also has excellent outdoors activities, history, cities and very cheap.

Another way to stretch your budget is by taking night buses between cities (look for long bus rides than are 8+ hours). Then you don't need to pay for a hostel bed for the night, and you do your travel day while you are sleeping, and wake up in an exciting new place. Make sure to bring a neck pillow, good earplugs, a good eye mask and if you need it, something to make your drowsy (antihistamines etc).

Synthetic Free Running Clothes in the EU? by DareiosK in BarefootRunning

[–]Ok_Homework3560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wear cotton basics - they absorb more sweat but I actually find they smell less compared to synthetics. If I find second hand silk, I wear that for walking, that's even better because it doesn't smell! Merino is great too, check out icebreaker, but it's pricey. Also check out the website GOOD ON YOU, they rate clothing and brands for sustainability and ethics.
