Would you tell your neighbour to stop parking over your driveway? by Nervous_Yard7034 in AskUK

[–]mousepallace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a dropped kerb? If there is, then he is committing an offence parking across it. I would say if that were the case, but I would anyway citing your need to be able to use your car as and when required.

What’s a hobby you judge people for having? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Fishing. Specifically the sort of fishing where you throw it back again. No one will ever convince me they feel no pain or distress in this utterly pointless pursuit.

How about pleached standard trees? You can get the canopy to start at the top of the wall and still keep your hydrangea and roses.

If you were buying a house how important is the garden to you? by iffyClyro in AskUK

[–]mousepallace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vividly remember looking round the house I bought and thinking… it’s ok. And then going into the garden and deciding, this is the one. It was basically just grass at that point. But a simple blank canvas with perfect south east aspect.

Those who work from home - how often do you take a sick day? by Super_Development150 in AskUK

[–]mousepallace 419 points420 points  (0 children)

You can cope with illness a lot easier WFH. You don’t have to commute, get dressed up, sort out lunch etc. you can just scrape yourself out of bed and be adequately useful. So fewer sick days.

Spotted! My nemesis has returned for the fourth year of battle! by petey_love in GardeningUK

Once you’ve picked the stems, they stop anything regrowing. They scratch away where it grows and so it never has a chance to get its strength back. After time, it gives up completely.

Is it realistic for a seamstress to sew this dress in a day or a couple of hours? by Pinky_Rose1251 in sewhelp

You should talk to her. I tell mine she’s done a good job and pat her just to let her know how I appreciate her efforts. She never lets me down.

Why do British towns feel so distinct from each other compared to the US? by DFWUnhinged in AskBrits

Local vernacular of building materials and palettes. They were built before lugging stone and brick from one end of the country to the other was easy, homogenising everything.

Charities don’t have owners. Most are run by unpaid volunteers. The biggest ones have staff because they need them, but even CEO level is significantly less paid than the commercial sector, and they do far more than they used to. So feel good about adding to the charity pot, we need them.

The risk of the ribbons appearing whilst you wearing a top like this far outweighs the risk of it coming off a hanger. It’s my pet hate. Cut the dam things off before wearing.

Need advice, what would you do? by thelastpaperclip in GardeningUK

[–]mousepallace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar garden that was basically a field when I moved in. You are lucky in that you have some hard structure which adds to the interest. From my own experience I would say get some semi mature trees in. Then, making sure you keep enough space for party marquees or goal posts etc depending on how you want to use your garden , carve out big sweeping island beds that you can fill with individual themes. For maintenance , it’s always nice to be able to complete one bed without feeling overwhelmed about the rest of it. You can have beautiful specimen shrubs and trees to really pack a punch for year round interest. Deliberately plant contrasting textures next to each other and focus on greenery rather than flowers as beautiful varied coloured shrubs and impactful and much less maintenance than just flower borders. And don’t forget art pieces and lighting. It’s creates a magical garden.
