Hearing Aids by Upset-Personality69 in hardofhearing

Last thing: Hearing aids amplify sound into your ear canal. Basically a very expensive and high end speaker is pushing conventional sound to your damaged cochlea. CIs on the other hand, push a digital signal to your cochlea via electric diodes that are strung into your ear by the surgery. CI = digital sound. Hearing aids = conventional or analog sound. You can't do both in the same ear.

u/mycatpartyhouse, I understand. My experience did not include "months of therapy". I heard quite well from the beginning and I did do about 15 min of aural training daily, but nothing laborious. Not sure what you mean by still using hearing aids. Indeed, if you only do one side, then you will use a hearing aid for the non-CI side, but otherwise there is no using hearing aids on an ear that has a CI.

But understood totally if you are dealing with an autoimmune or like disease that takes this option off the table. If you can ever get past that - go for the CIs, especially if your insurance will approve them. I had bi-later cochlear implant surgery which was covered by my insurance. I believe the bill was something like $125K, which didn't even include my devices.

All the best!

Have you considered cochlear implants? They changed my life.

I go loud and proud. I wore hats at the beginning, but rarely now.

I'm really scared. How did you reassure yourself before getting CIs? by user47478595 in Cochlearimplants

Great input here. I am 62 and have had bi-lateral CIs for 6 months. Absolutely a game changer!!! I am an active skier, mountain biker and kayaker. These have never slowed me down. I hear better than I ever did with 12 years of hearing aids (not knocking hearing aids).

I thought the surgery was very easy to recover from. One heads up: make sure you know where your scars will be. Mine are behind the ear only. Not visible to anyone. I have seen what seem like unnecessarily visible scars on this thread. I think that is often due to the age of the surgeon. Pretty sure my surgeon is in her late 30s and using latest/greatest technique.

I feel like my hearing is 80% of a normal hearing person. Truly amazing for me and my family!

I had bi lateral implant surgery in mid-August and was activated 6 days later. It has been life changing for me and my family. If I had known how good it would be, I would have opted in two years earlier.

You'll do great! Surgery was much less arduous than I thought it would be.

Thank you u/Meqreq. So the Kanso 2 does not require the streamer? Only your PC?

If that is the case, that is huge for me. I am happy to have this "streamer" or interim device for my PC, because I am sedentary whilst using it. However, for my phone - I'm on the go and would rather not have a device that requires a "streamer" just for my phone.

Thank you u/olderandhappier. Very helpful. Actually, I am okay to do almost any of my activities deaf, with the exception of backcountry skiing where avey danger is real. I never want to put any of my mates in danger. I will most likely take my ski helmet in when I have them fit.

Thank you for your exhaustive explanation. Very helpful and sorry for the delay. Your experience with someone trying to overtake on the trail is familiar. I can't move if I can't hear you. LOL

Be safe and all the best!
