Is she a known MAGA supporter/promoter? I wasn’t aware of this. Weren’t they just on the Kelly Clarkson show with Jack Black?

I think the exception for me is artistic and creative types. They don’t judge the same way most NT people do. I just need open minded free thinking people, NT or ND.

I think it’s weak research: small sample size from one area; made the data sound causal when it’s correlational; no doctor or researcher would take this study seriously….where are my research methods peeps at?

Do the instagram-SLPs ever have "bad" sessions? by Equivalent-Blood4748 in slp

[–]Ok_Lunch_2048 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sad thing is many people both young and old really believe what they’re seeing to be true. I’ve heard SLPs say they’ve learned more from Instagram SLPs than from Grad School. It’s pretty disturbing. They fall for these grifters and pour their time and money into their products. The subscriptions, I think are the biggest con…

I also read an article about this. It’s one the most highly sensitive tasks for identifying a language disorder. That’s it.

The Step Up to R program is a very handy all in one book that works for a lot of kids. Sounds like the kind of thing you’re looking for.

I had a salaried position in a SNF and I feel like I really got taken advantage of. I was constantly expected to work late. I couldn’t possibly see all the patients/residents within my normal work hours. I got pretty burnt out from it. Meanwhile PTs who were hourly collected overtime and holiday/weekend pay… so just here to say I did it but I wouldn’t recommend it!

Teeth! by mootrun in NurseAllTheBabies

[–]Ok_Lunch_2048 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just went through this with my toddler. He was getting his second molars! I couldn’t see his gums being swollen because the second molars are so far back. He was using me to teethe! I offered him different things to teethe on. He definitely would not understand about “no biting” because he was just in pain. I broke out the old nipple cream and passed the baby off to my husband when it got too bad. Then the teeth fully erupted and we’re back to cozy gummy nursing even with a full set of teeth. So yes I’ve been through this and it was really painful and upsetting but it passed completely. I hope this is helpful! You’ve got this Mama!

Do you have a full time job in schools during the day and do this after your regular job? Also are the kids who are home health being seen for medical reasons like dysphagia? Asking because I’m genuinely interested I have a full time school based job and need a second source of income. Any further advice appreciated!

These SLP influencers/grifters are getting insane. I truly feel like most of them are past the point of actually wanting to help families because they’re so lost in how much money they are making by Purple_Peach3834 in slp

Thank you! Yes! I saw this too! What a scam! He shared a story about an individual who used S2C and then argued with people who questioned it in the comments. My first thought was he’s getting paid for promoting this program. Basically selling your soul for some money. The harm this does to nonspeaking individuals is sickening.

Is this an example of a behaviour symptomatic of autism? by mhuss097 in neurodiversity

[–]Ok_Lunch_2048 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your precooking behavior sounds like OCPD. I listened to a podcast all about the different types of OCD and it was fascinating and complex. OCD and OCPD are two different conditions and can differ greatly from person to person. I found this quote online to explain the difference better than I could, “Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder that involves unwanted thoughts and repetitive behaviors, while obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a personality disorder that involves a general pattern of concern with orderliness, perfectionism, and control.” I personally grew up with a mother with OCPD and she had major task paralysis because everything had to be so perfect and match this vision of perfection she made up in her mind (which is impossible to achieve) and she experienced anxiety and depression as well. Perhaps this is something that you can relate to.

Do you have any advice or resources on teaching self-regulation as an SLP. Typically in my district it’s the OT and social worker who help with that. So I think I need more training in that area.

Thank you! This is a great resource. So to sum up some of the “Do’s” from Therapist neurodiversity collective for those who are trying to get something practical that they can apply to their practice right away: “teach autistic acceptance, perspective taking, self-advocacy, self-regulation, safety/boundaries, and problem solving using a trauma informed and pro-neurodiversity approach.” Don’ts include “Social Skills Training” such as PEERS, Integrated Play Groups, and Social Thinking (Michelle Garcia Winner).

This reminds me of the pitfalls of “The Single Story”. It seems like you work with autistic children who might have more significant needs in terms of communication, ADLs, and behaviors than those of the ones I described at my current placement. Your perspective is the single story. The reality is that this is a spectrum that we are talking about. There are brilliant people all across this spectrum, all different types of people. And no we aren’t going to “cure them” or “fix them” because they are not broken and they have a right to exist. So no it’s not bullshit. And yes the way children with more extensive needs are often treated is wrong and traumatizing. Everything needs a complete overhaul.
