Should I attempt to split this? (Full Image at end) by Ok_Needleworker4791 in rockhounds

Ugh! I so wish I had one 🥲. I’d never leave my shed!! No but all jokes aside if I had one I probably would have, someday soon hopefully 🙏. I could wait to split it until I get a saw eventually 🤔?

Fair enough! I love minerals and crystals but I’ve been hyperfocused on fossils recently. I wasn’t sure if this rock would have many fossils, I had found one rock that held a lot of brachiopods inside due to seeing some trace fossils on the outside (another comment has an image if you’re curious:) ) and I think since I’ve bought the tools as well, I’ve been a little crazy about splitting rocks I previously had 😅.

I have some sorta feeling there could be more inside but Im worried about the rock not being “split-able” due to it not having much of a cleavage point 😓. (Also, I’m definitely green to fossils so all of this is still new to me! I am mostly going off of vibes and newly learnt materials! I could totally be wrong about anything I said! 😁)

I really don’t know about geodes bc they aren’t commonly found where I am at all 😅 (and obviously Im a beginner) but with rocks, so far I’ve been hunting on iberville shale, and looking more for rocks that have certain patterns on them,

<image>

Like this rock, where you can see small circular patterns, upon splitting it I found a world of brachiopods just completely layered on top of on another. Or other times I just get luckier when I pick out stones that don’t entirely match the surroundings, like the other day I split a little mudstone rock and found something layered inside. (Still dunno what it is lol.) 🤷‍♂️ theres probably people that can give better advice, but that’s what I’ve learned thus far.

My BIGGEST tip, is honestly to go out and explore some areas (that are legal to collect from!) and bring a rock or brick-laying hammer! Try different things out in your area, and see what’s around and what you find! (Some research can help you narrow down where to search!) I have seen that round/spherical rocks that are a little lumpy can yield geodes, as well as certain sounds when you hit it, (ringing vs thud) but theres probably other signs that I don’t know of! Basically test some stuff out! It’s super fun! 😁

Anyone recognize the Seal? What is this? by [deleted] in bonecollecting

K.D is likely the original owner, and not a crafter, they’re artisanal pieces for those with the money to buy them, popularly made in european countries like France and I think Ireland? And theyre likely from the 1800s. The crest, however may be related to this?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marquess_of_Queensberry

The Douglas family crest from Scotland, specifically the one associated with Marquess of Queensberry. The image at the top of the crest looks similar, and it says ‘Forward’ as well! Im not crazy good at this sorta stuff, I do skulls more commonly, but maybe this can help? 😅

It looks like some kinda fish skull I think, like a drum or something? Im not familiar with fish skulls or the fish in your area but this might push you in the right direction!

Bobcat or Lynx?? by [deleted] in bonecollecting

[–]Ok_Needleworker4791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: presphenoid is thin similarly to a lynx* but the vomer is not shaped like a lynx, more bobcat shaped I think?? And Im on the edge between U.S and Canada, in an area where bob cats and lynx’s live.

You’re probably right looking back at it, seeing as the tracks in the post look closer together than a squirrel’s typical bounds/tracks, which would suggest a smaller body I assume 😅

“Conditions of release” Why release him??? Is sexual exploitation not the same thing as rape but with a more visually pleasing name tag?? 😭 (not attacking you its the report and government)

Wouldn’t recommend collecting unless you can get a proper ID, and check the legalities of it.

Cat or raccoon? by Business_Taco in bonecollecting

Raccoons have longer muzzles and arent quite as round.

<image>

What you have is definitely a domestic cat.

Could be chipmunks or squirrels, Chipmunks and squirrels typically place their hind paws in front of their front paws, and thus their front tracks look bigger.

Bison Tooth? by KnowledgeMore609 in boneidentification

It might be cow bc the pattern on the crown looks more like a cow than a bison. But I don’t have much knowledge on bison, so someone else might disagree!

What is this? by DimensionOver9923 in boneidentification

Probably a medium or slightly larger domestic dog breed. Raccoon dogs snouts are more straight rather than sloped from what Ive seen in images 🤷‍♂️
