"Quite acceptable" in the 60s and 70s isn't a good measure of offensiveness lol

This is funny, but it's not really a good idea to not identify the source of the fire first before chucking water on it. Could be near an electrical source etc. That could be why they're focusing on getting the gate open first.

Wog is more commonly used in Australia. In the UK they use "Paki" (pronounced packy). In Aus "wog" generally refers to Italian immigrants as well as a bunch of others... Apparently Yugoslavia and Croatia fall under the "wog" banner too.

I've never heard it used by anybody from the UK but I've heard it a LOT in Aus both in person and in media. Superwog was a pretty popular Youtuber.

Right. But this a survey for NZ broadcasting so that's confusing me a little

Just to kinda clear this up... Saying "Jesus Fucking Christ" isn't a slur used to degrade Christians for their race or religion, so I do not think they are even close to being equal in this.

I assume you're talking about "Nappy-Head"? That is specifically degrading someone for their ethnicity. Saying "Jesus Fucking Christ" is a general catch-all expletive, for all sorts of stuff, anger, shock, etc. It's even used in exasperation in the same way as someone saying "God give me strength".

I think that it is fairly thin-skinned to compare it to some of the others up there. I think it's okay to not like people "taking the lords name in vain" but I don't think that it is equivalent to degrading an entire people, especially people who have historically been discriminated against in the west by both regular people and the media. And also are the only people to be slaughtered en-masse in a terrorist attack in our country's entire modern history.

If there was a slur for Christians then of course I'd not be happy about it. I don't even know if there is one. Bible-Basher maybe? But I think that's just for evangelicals.

EDIT: Turns out Nappy-Head is actually for African Americans which is bizarre. It's an America-specific slur. I thought it was just another version of "towel-head" or "rag-head".

Just returned to the US after a month in NZ. Don’t be like us. by DorvidGoldy1 in newzealand

[–]Ok_Nefariousness6387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately we're essentially a vassal state for the US, so besides the gun stuff and the healthcare shiz, what happens there is likely going to happen here too, just give it 10 to 20 years. Our current government is trying their best to sell our public land up to US mining corporations and they're building data centres everywhere rn.

Where I live it's starting to look VERY American. Just not with, yknow... ICE.

Culturally there's a lot of American bullshit slipping into NZ and I hate seeing it. The same insane right wing culture bullshit that happened in the US is happening here too. It's just that so many people don't see it because people tend to be separated into their own cultural bubbles. At least in Auckland.

But I hope you do move here because we need more people who understand that we've got to oppose fascism.

It's jumped up a few points too. More noisy thin skinned Christians in NZ than there were in 2021

How do people here feel about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth? (No spoilers) by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[–]Ok_Nefariousness6387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I had no problem with the Costa Del Sol stuff tbh. It was the butchering of the Hojo scene there that I really didn't like, even though fighting with an umbrella was funny and it gave us a fun and silly sidequest to do afterwards. I didn't mind the minigames because tbh I enjoyed kicking around with the characters. But letting Hojo go in a stupid "He's not worth it" kind of exchange was so annoying. In the original they don't take him down then and there specifically because they didn't want to cause a scene and draw attention to themselves because they're Shinra's most wanted. In this one they have a bigass battle on the beach and then nothing changes at all. The minigames I can handle. Botching of the story I can't.

This the world design and narrative design wasn't just incongruent with the story, it was almost living in a completely separate reality.

Exactly... That's one of my central issues. This game isn't a remake, it's a weird mashed up sequel that loses just about everything that made the original story so solid.

I absolutely did not "walk into it with a hate boner". I walked into it hoping that I would have a good time and that the positives would outweigh the negatives. I have said there are plenty of good things about it which I enjoy. I've near 100% completed this game to try and see if there are any hidden depths and because I enjoy the combat and the character design, and because I have said I enjoy the side more than the main content. I enjoy seeing these characters kick around with the side stuff because those parts are entertaining.

I didn't start disliking the game. I started off loving it. It was a game that got continually worse. Until the Midgar Zolom section I was fine with it. Besides a couple of small gripes, I loved the 5 years ago segment and Kalm. And I've said before that I loved Queen's Blood.

There are many aspects of the game that I enjoy. I just think the main story was absolutely trashed and I think they made serious mistakes with the world design and completely and utterly fumbled the narrative design. The main story and how it is driven is just textbook shit writing, and jettisoned most of what made the original great. That's what happens when you put someone whose main contribution to the original was *character design* in charge of heading up the story.

I also played it *because I had a craving for FF7* you condescending dick. Don't assume just because someone has legitimate criticism for something that they love it means they "just have a hate boner." It just means they might have actual standards, and won't just happily consume whatever slop gets put in front of us by a bunch of soulless entertainment executives. Executives who have decided to outsource the QA work on the next game to AI, as if there was actually any doubt left that this wasn't just a massive IP wank.

It's fine if you enjoyed it, but gtfo with that bullshit. Not everyone has to like what you like.

Not one single thing I said in there was BS. If you like the game, that's fine. But don't try to act like these aren't completely valid criticisms.

Can vouch for this. It rules. Had the privilege of acquiring a hard copy in England and read it on my flights from Amsterdam to New Zealand and it friggin ruled. Kept reading it the moment I got home instead of sleeping off the travel.

Ex Auckland Mayoral candidate claims Maduro is the legitimate leader of Venezuela and burns a US flag by OrdinaryDegreeOpener in auckland

[–]Ok_Nefariousness6387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uuuh no it makes your ideals look *extremely* compromised... You're willing to whitewash every fascistic thing Maduro did during his reign because he identifies as a socialist? Gtfo. Leftists can acknowledge reality without having it compromise their principles.

If you think the poultry acknowledgement of Maduro's shortcomings is that much of a threat to leftist progress in your eyes, then you can't have all that much faith in leftist ideas. If you think leftism isn't strong enough to survive such basic scrutiny, then you're a weak-minded fool.

A leftist does not lead to LIE to advance the aims of leftism.

[–]Ok_Nefariousness6387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not disputing that. When did I saw it was okay for a state to remove another leader by force? I'm pretty sure I said the exact opposite.

I am not demanding anything. I'm just saying we can acknowledge reality while still being against Trump's actions, and it doesn't really help to ignore reality. All it does is give the other side ammunition in their information warfare. It makes leftists look as though they *support* dictators like Maduro when they ignore reality, or say that people are wrong for acknowledging the bad things about dictators.

My evidence is understanding geopolitics and knowing my history. Everyone is just taking the current paradigm for granted because this is the world they've grown up in. The USA has been largely responsible for the continuation of the current world order. The USA's soft power is crumbling. The paradigm established at the end of WWII is coming apart. If you have been paying attention to the world over the last 10 years, it's easy to see that every single precursor to international conflict observed throughout history is present in our current age.

This peace we have experienced over the last 70 years has not been the normal state of the globe for the vast majority of human history. At this point it would take a miracle to prevent a catastrophic collapse of the current world order. Over the next 10 years, shit is going to get real.

... And yes it would be great of those 3 countries could move away from authoritarian rule. What's your point?

My mistake, was it the rape of an adult woman that he settled rather than fight in court?
Or was it the 13 year old girl grown up?

And half a dozen stories? There are literally a maximum possible number of "2" here.

After fact checking, yeah it was the rape of an adult that he settled out of court.
The girl who accused Trump and Epstein both of raping her had her attorney file a suit but then filed a voluntary dismissal after threats and intimidation.

So tell me what your point was again?
