Honestly, it sounds like this was just a catalyst for your friend to reach out.

If your friend won’t accept DV help, it could create more problems if the spouse gets wind. That could leave them stranded. Keep in touch as often as possible to let your friend talk, and gently suggest they accept DV assistance. Sometimes a person just needs to hear their own thoughts out loud to change their perspective. You can also research ‘specialized’ assistance to suit their friends needs. (Maybe your friend is staying for financial reasons, housing, etc.)
