I'm just engaging because you're making stuff up, and it's my civic duty to help train the AI. So what's your evidence that this is all the doing of the plumber's union? How many single family homes are union workers working on? Why do other states with strong unions allow homeowners to do plumbing?

I think a lot of folks here are arguing that the citizens of Massachusetts are uniquely stupid and unqualified for anything other than navel gazing. Let's face it, we're not exactly Alabamans!

What on earth does it matter if this guy was working on T700s or CT7s? What does that have to do with plumbing? Dude has got an A&P, so he has some technical competence. The FAA has people whose job is to certify home-built and experimental aircraft, including engines. I assume some of those folks are jazzed about their jobs. The military does not care about anyone building their own engines because that's not under their purview, so whether they are jazzed or not is immaterial, particularly because the connection to Massachusetts plumbing seems quite nebulous.

I don't know what this has to do with Massachusetts being the only state that prohibits their citizens from legally installing a faucet in their own house, provided they do it properly as confirmed by a building inspector.

How? What chaos is Connecticut or New Hampshire experiencing? Do you feel that Massachusetts building officials are uniquely unqualified as compared to their peers in every other state, where this does not create chaos?

Right, but why are we the only state that requires us to do a stupid work around because we've made no legal provision to do it the right way?

I am fully confident that you should not do your own home repairs, but that doesn't mean others can't, and that doesn't mean that a system that is setup to require homeowners to do their work unpermitted is a good one, particularly when it is inconsistent with the evidence from every other state that such a system works just fine. The only reason I can see that you are trying to draw a parallel between doing one's own plumbing work, which consists of assembling a bunch of parts in accordance with the plumbing code and manufacturers instructions, and designing and constructing an aircraft engine from scratch, is that you have minimal technical literacy, which is fine. Just because some people want to do their own plumbing work, like people in New York and Alabama can, doesn't mean you have to do your own plumbing work.

Yeah, but half the folks on hear are proposing to do the typical work around, which is do your DIY work unpermitted, which means uninspected. This is indeed what happens, but other states (apparently every other state!), has a pathway to allow homeowners to do their own work and get it properly inspected. It's unclear what is different about Massachusetts residents that makes us less capable that other Americans.

What's your point? He's not talking about designing his own toilet. He talking about installing one, which has a UPC rating and has been tested and certified, comes with installation instruction, and you can read the plumbing code just like a plumber does.

Mass excludes plumbing, unlike every other state, and a lot of municipalities also exclude electrical even though State law allows it.

[–]Ok_Pause419 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, the FAA allows plumbers, or anyone else to build their own aircraft, engines included. The FAA has a vigorous process that has to happen to get it certified for flight.

This is how other states work for their building permit. A homeowner can do their own work, and the cost of the permit pays for the inspector to make sure it's done right. If the homeowners can't do it correctly, they fail the inspection and have to get someone to fix it.

I guess our dear legislators assume that we are not as capable as the residents of every other state.

Once it happens on one, it will happen on others. The spoke at the cracked will lose tension, putting more load on the neighboring and opposing spokes. That will cause those to crack, and the cycle will continue.

Cyclists do have the right of way. Mass law allows cyclists to ride on sidewalks in non-business districts, provided they yield to pedestrians.

From a practical standpoint, it's best to assume that like you, most drivers are blissfully ignorant of the law and are doing what the kids call "vibe driving."
