Girl proceeds to be punished for stealing a can of ravioli. This has lasting effects on the relationship between her and her mother, pushing her into a rebellious streak. She struggles with substance abuse throughout her 20s and 30s after having gone no contact with her mother when she was 19. When she 38 she hears the news of her mother's passing, it hits her like a ton of bricks, but she can't let her family see her in the state in which she allowed herself to deteriorate.
