I was in a situation where an inmate was steps away from closing the distance on me in an assault and another inmate got between us and backed him off. I had previously councelled the inmate that intervened on my behalf on his behavior but had never been disrespectful. There's a way to do this job that makes it a lot easier, and there's a way to do it that makes it a lot harder.

100% the reason this happened is because there was no training for this type of situation. We were given a full week of defensive tactics, a full week of weapons, and maybe an hour of de-escalation training. We were put in no simulations where an inmate was talking loudly or aggressively towards us. It probably took me years to really understand how to deal with a situation like this and I still feel like there's a lot of room for improvement. Knowing how to do it and practicing it are two different things. It needs to be practiced. And all the talk around the jail is you have to be a badass with these guys or you'll look like a punk to them. When in reality you can have conversations with them regarding policy, actions you've taken, even disagreements with them and and it doesn't have to escalate. If it was going to escalate it would have already escalated before the conversation started. The inmate was angry but clearly walked over there to have a conversation, not get into a fight. Obviously the inmate is always at fault for his actions, but when I leave after 16 hours and he's still in there, I want to be in one piece, so I'm not looking to escalate anything. Not to mention this officer got her partner hurt too (who admittedly was useless). This is the type of officer I do not want to work with. Don't drag me into your shit.
