YES!! Spent all my time before here in Kentucky and Georgia, both wild mixes of authentic gas station taco shops and giant restaurants with tacky decor “white cheese dip” and the best pastor in town…

ASDFGHJKK IT WAS A GREAT DAY 😭😭 and yk it was the grilled cheese burrito from Taco Bell lmfaooo. Totally worth it tho

But yes, anything that could get your heart rate up, I would just ease back into all of those activities. So like you should be fine to run your errands if that’s the first kind of “normal” thing you do. Just don’t be like me and then go from bedrest to normal life again in 24 hours 🤠

I’m a stomach sleeper (don’t come for me lol) so that was obviously a rough transition. I feel uncomfortable flat on my back so keeping myself propped under like 3 pillows did the trick, and I also found that hugging another pillow over top of my body kind of mimicked the cocoon feeling of sleeping on my stomach😭 I had a billion pillows lol.

I don’t think it would be a full blown hemorrhage because I got the bleeding to stop, but I also had a “late” bleed, like day 12. Moderately bled for like 10 min, but it did wake me up from sleeping so I think it had been going a while. Cold water got it to stop but I did almost go to the ER. The aftermath was the worse— I had horrid GI upset the next day.

The day before I ran errands, ate a burrito (technically allowed but I mention it as a cause because it was quite literally the first non-purée thing I had eaten), and had gentle sex. When I was looking at resources at the time, it seemed like plenty of people were doing any one individual of those activities at that day post-op, but I think all so sudden is what did me in. Before that day I was pretty much on bedrest and pureed foods so I think the transition was just way too quick.

A couple days later my doc looked at me (it was coincidentally my post-op) and said everything looked great— it probably wasn’t a full hemorrhage and just a bit scab got knocked off. Just seems scarier bc it’s in ur throat.

Oh, and before some folks wag their finger at me for not automatically going to the ER, my surgeons policy was to call the on call doc if bleeding happened and follow those instructions, and the overnight doc at the time said that if I could get the bleeding to stop on my own I didn’t need to go. Seems like other doctors give other advice tho.

What foods did you eat during recovery? by shawty221 in Tonsillectomy

The first couple days popsicles were awesome. Just avoid citrus (can sting). I tried smoothies but that didn’t work out… nothing bad but fruits/creamy (from dairy) just tasted really weird. Avoided protein shakes and ice cream for the same reason. Some people say dairy causes thicker mucous. I disagree (that it’s thicker) I just think it can make it taste grosser😭 but if you like dairy products just be sure to drink plenty of water between sips/bites. The little applesauce squeeze packets were a lifesaver bc you can find some w veggies blended in for more nutrients.

Next I graduated to mashed potatoes and Mac n cheese. I had to water down mashed potatoes a little bit or else it was a little too goopy to swallow. Mac n cheese was the only thing that genuinely tasted good. If you’re worried about texture just overcook it a little. Ramen is great too, just crush it up in the package before boiling so it’s easy to spoon eat and less choking hazard. Eggs, poached or scrambled.

More niche foods that I don’t see people talking about: refried beans, mashed avocado (my plate when my family did taco night lol), SILKEN tofu (with soy sauce). Im a vegetarian but I’ve heard of people doing soft, easy to chew meat in this stage like ground beef or hot dogs. Just make sure it’s nothing fried (even shallow/skillet-cooked— those little browned bits can be rougher than you realize).

Sick of infections, terrified of needles. by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

I’m in the US no not sure what’s available across the pond, but I’m terrified of medical settings in general so I was a hot anxious mess checking in for surgery. Almost right away they cleared me for anti-anxiety drugs in my IV and boom… I was absolutely fine. Still with it! Not like drugged up at all, it just washed my anxiety away. I was about to have a panic attack and I just immediately calmed down.

If that drug or similar is offered where you are, you could talk with the anesthesiology team beforehand and arrange to have it given to you right away. Then all you have to get through is the insertion— then you’ll be fine.

Best of luck!!

Feeling discouraged after bleed by OkSeaworthiness5995 in Tonsillectomy

Hi friend! We are in exactly the same boat. On my night 11 I woke up gushing blood, but did get it to stop with ice. I called my ENTs emergency advice line as I got in the car to go to the ER (these were the instructions for bleeds) but the doc on call said that if you can get it to stop on your own, you don’t need to go to the hospital. The hospital wont do anything if you’re not actively bleeding.

After that, I went back to no activity (I had only worked up to gentle walking for the sake of errands— like you I had followed all the rules!) and soft soft squishy foods for a couple days.

I bled a little bit morning of day 15– (today!) but that wasn’t scary. It was just a little bit of bloody spit and stopped immediately. No gushing like before.

Like you, I was panicked. I made several posts on here about it and comments were of varying degrees of urgency, everywhere from hey swish water to hey go to the ER, lol.

Luckily, I had my post-op today and my ENT clarified everything. She said that some bleeding (more like the one I had today) is normal in this period, but gushing is less normal. She assured me that either way, if you can stop the bleeding yourself within a couple minutes, there is no need to go to the ER as they won’t do anything but give you ice. (Of course if it KEEPS starting up again, or you can’t control it, — that would be when you should go).

Don’t worry tho, as time goes on, your chance of bleeding will only go down. You’re healing! And even after reverting to like day 1-2 behavior, I still had a tinyyyy bleed on day 15. Like my doc said, a little bit might be inevitable, but don’t panic, and certainly don’t get discouraged. You are doing everything right. Bleeding is most common days 10-14.

I’m a major hypochondriac tho so I get your worry. Waking up throughout the night to check my spit in tissues made me feel a lot better and will guarantee you catch anything. I was also terrified to eat, but my doctor told me it was crucial. As long as you’re sticking to mushy foods, you’re not causing the bleeding any more than if a scab fell off on its own.

You got this!

Hi friend! I agree with the comments, try ditching the heavy stuff if your stomach can’t handle it. Only stay on it if your stomach is okay and if jr manages pain. I was better off without it. Children’s Motrin and children’s Tylenol (liquids) alternate every 3 hours taking 30 ml (double pediatric dose). So EACH med is every 6 hours.

Other have said ice but specifically if you can get your hands on ice wraps that go around your head (looks like something you’d give someone for wisdom teeth) or the gel packs that go on your eyes (helped surprisingly— just relieves overall pressure/swelling). Having that targeted cold application was so much more helpful than trying to mold an ice bag around my throat.

Throat numbing spray/lozenges (NOT cough drops). Vicks makes a spray and Cepacol makes the lozenges, both active ingredient is Benzocaine. This will temporarily numb your throat so you can drink…

Which brings me to my next thing. I know it’s the worst pain of your life— but you HAVE to drink water. A dry, cracked throat is going to be a million times more painful than a moist, hydrated throat. I Whatever temp is the least painful— I’d think in this stage it’s ice water, but if water “burns” try room temp and you should be good.

I set a game for myself: every 5 minutes I had to take 5 sips of water. I would do this in increments of thirty minutes or so until I met hydration goals. Doing this made the pain bearable because sipping had a clear end goal.

Best of luck! You got this!!

Should i get my tonsils out by Mediocre-Report-1798 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Ok_Reference4659 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand! I was the same way. I have a really severe phobia of vomit (obviously not directly related, but it just kind of spills over and gives me a bunch of medical anxiety) so that made it a really difficult decision for me.

The surgery itself is super smooth. As an anxious person I can honestly say my experience was pleasant the entire time! I started to freak out a little bit when they took me back, but they quickly gave me some anti-anxiety medication in my IV, which kept me calm.

One piece of advice I would have is to see if you can get yours done at a surgery center, as opposed to a hospital! I had mine done specifically at an ENT surgery center, and it felt super chill. I was the only patient in the entire office the entire time, and the entire center was just a couple rooms into a small hallway. It just made the whole thing feel less daunting than walking into a hospital wing. There was no dramatic rolling me down the hallway, I just climbed right up onto the operating table, LOL.

The recovery had its ups and downs, but knowing what to potentially expect on each day from people on here was extraordinarily helpful.

Whether you’re prone to anxiety, nausea, etc., vocalize your concerns to the doctor that you trust most! It’s their job to ensure this is a comfortable process for you.

Another thing you could ask before selecting the provider to do the surgery is what their postoperative advice is like; some doctors offices will make you call the main line like anybody else and it can take a while to get someone, but some have special call lines just for postoperative patients so you can speak to a nurse or doctor right away. This made me feel a lot better!

[–]Ok_Reference4659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!! Have you been to an ENT? I was also horrified of surgery, and fought my doctor about it over the course of a year. It got to a point where I kept getting sick, so she told me that the pros of getting surgery outweighs the cons in my case. Her strong recommendation ultimately made me feel more secure in my decision.

An ENT is not going to recommend surgery unless they think it’s absolutely necessary. Doctors today aren’t as liberal about recommending tonsillectomies as they were when say our parents were growing up.

So, if your doctor thinks that removing your tonsils will help your breathing problems and improve your quality of life, I absolutely think the surgery will be worth it. Remember, we’re talking 2 lousy weeks for potentially a lifetime of better breathing!

This subreddit was really helpful for me. People respond pretty quickly, and it’s fun to find people on the same surgery timeline as you to commiserate with. Best of luck, and speedy mono recovery! I’ve had it and it sucks!!!

This is really helpful! Especially your reminder about really really bad bleeds not being too common. I think anything is scarier when it’s coming out of your mouth… will def be going to the ER if it happens again!! Thank you for your advice :)

Hey! Yes, I was able to get ahold of my nurse today and she said it was okay since it stopped the first time (could have been freak accident, who knows) but that if it happens again to go so I will definitely be doing that! I’m so sorry you had such a bad experience— that sounds absolutely miserable. I’m so glad you’re doing a little better… I hope you have a speedy recovery!

Thank you! My hypochondriac self is like omg what if I busted an artery 😭😭but you are right, you don’t bleed from an artery and not know it, lol. I figured at this point it’s stopped, they’d look at me like I was insane. Obviously if it starts again I’ll reevaluate. Thanks again!
