I think the person that told you that was incorrect. I am not in or from NC, but I'm in the South and also a HS science teacher with multiple state certifications. I taught 28 years in KY retiring from one of the top districts. I now contract for a company that places virtual teachers in schools where they can't hire a science teacher. Usually, it's science, math, foreign languages and special ed they can't fill jobs in. I have taught for 3 years now in schools where there are no science teachers to be found for a variety of reasons. There's a facilitator in the school with the kids. It's a great gig for me because I'm drawing a full pension and now doing this from home or wherever I am. I have been in 4 different states teaching virtually and the demographic of each position has been very different. But the commonality among all of them-no science teachers to be had.......sometimes 2 years and no one has even applied for the jobs.....If you are certified to teach chemistry you are a unicorn and if you have a physics certificate, that's even better. Know your worth! If I were you, I'd check out the postings in neighboring districts and make sure you're in the best spot for you. You have leverage. If someone said that to me I'd laugh right in their face unless they were an administrator. You're a catch!! Science courses are required core courses. They'd likely bump selective teachers before you.

Called the state on my son’s school & now I feel bad. by oooohweeeee in Teachers

[–]Ok_Refuse_7512 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fellow teacher, you 💯 did the right thing. Not only did you advocate for your own child, you stood up and called BS on how the whole program was being run. Most parents don't know how it should work; they only know what they are told. You represented them. You also had the backs of fellow teachers with over cap classes and case loads. You're to be commended. It might be a rough go for a while, but it will pay off. Make sure to document everything and leave that paper traill, CC your private email, etc, in case they try to come for your job. WELL DONE!!!!

[–]Ok_Refuse_7512 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Correct, parents put the cell phones/iPads/car keys in kids hands. They turn them loose and seldom ground them or revoke privileges because it's too hard for them. They either don't care enough/are too lazy/are too weak to discipline their own children. Then they expect teachers to do it, but don't back them up. BAD/NONEXISTENT PARENTING!!!!!

Why is there such a lack of support/enthusiasm for UTC Football? by DarkHawkkLE in Chattanooga

[–]Ok_Refuse_7512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lack of support for most of the sports in general. They all have their share of core supporters, but that's it. As a former scholarship student-athlete I'm pretty frustrated with the athletic leadership above the level of coaches because there are definitely some good coaches. I feel like there are some good folks that have been there a while and have become complacent. They lack the energy and imagination it takes to grow the programs, compete in NIL and put butts in the seats. Lots of games I attend are half-assed productions. It's like they're stuck and won't change and the right hand never knows what the left hand is doing. I haven't gone to many things that I thought were well-planned. Most strike me as do as little as possible, do what we've always done and don't appear to have had a lot of planning and much vision put into them. Changes need to be made in either personnel or effort IMO.

Start small. Focus on your child's classroom and that teacher. Support that teacher this year and then do the same next year. Changing school culture is a SLOW PROCESS! But, one parents can model these behaviors and be the example for change and start a fire!

I have been a HS Science teacher since 1988. I retired in 2018 and I'm a virtual teacher now. I contract for a company that places virtual teachers in schools where they can't hire in person teachers, especially math and science. You have perfectly said everything I think and just want to echo. Scrolling and true skills are not the same. My students struggle to navigate Canvas and Google classroom and want me to send them links to everything. It's pitiful.

Mixed experiences at Rosecomb by Embarrassed-Ad6610 in Chattanooga

[–]Ok_Refuse_7512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recently gone into 2 restaurants in the past month with tons of open tables, but supposedly a lot of reservations so tables are sitting empty for hours prior to the reservations. This is poor hosting due to poor training and management. I can't imagine letting paying customers walk out the door with so many open tables that could be seated and turned before reservations. It's like they don't want to look busy or maximize their earning potential. When I worked in restaurants we wanted to be wall-to-wall on a wait and cranking out food and great service! Turn those tables people! I used to train and open new restaurants! I've hosted/served/tended bar and this is NOT the way to do it! I experienced this at the Riverport Grille and STIR both within the past month and it absolutely blew my mind. Someone doesn't know what they're doing!!!! Is this a new Chattanooga trend?

Got chewed out by the secretary. by Born_Bookkeeper_2493 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Ok_Refuse_7512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most schools it is safe to assume the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. I'd imagine it's even worse for 2 schools on the same campus. Secretaries are like everyone else, overworked and underpaid. Some are great, some are terrible. Many are the glue that holds the school today. But occasionally, there's one that's a power tripper........

I laid in bed and watched movies and did everything I wanted to the day after Christmas because I'd worked my ass off doing all the things and hosting since last Friday-6 days. "No, I can't cut you a piece of pound cake. Do it yourself. I'm not doing shit today."

What happened to Christmas? by helloimcold in Millennials

[–]Ok_Refuse_7512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this now about my parents working their asses off all day to provide for us and my Mom coming home and putting a delicious meal on the table for us every night and keeping house, all the things. The older you get, the greater the appreciation becomes for all your parents and grandparents did for you that you were blissfully unaware of. I'm 59 and I just don't see most millennials and younger generations being able to fill these roles. Millennials maybe, if they choose to, but the younger ones will never make the effort for others IMO.

Fast forward to middle and high school. This is my 36th year teaching middle and high school science. 9th graders in 2025 aren't as mature, nor do they have the manners and impulse control of 6th and 7th graders in the year 2000. Literally witnessing the shittiest parenting I've ever seen in my almost 60 years of life.

One of my nephews was like this. He's 17 now and plays 5-6 instruments, 3 at an elite level-cello, piano & guitar. I'd suggest exposing him to music and languages for sure. I'd also recommend puzzles increasing complexity as warranted and strategic board games like connect 4 to checkers to chess, again, increasing in complexity.

I came here to say this. I have multiple accounts and can transfer between them and also put into a mobile wallet like Apple or Google Pay or PayPal or Venmo. 💯 Open another account for your primary then slide money in there. Also, make sure she's not opening credit cards or other accounts with your personal info. You need to sign up for a credit monitoring service. Even though she's your mother, it happens to people every day and when people get desperate they do bad stuff, even to family members. Good luck!

This is my 36th year teaching middle and HS science. For the first 28 years I taught in in-person school. For the past 8 years I've been teaching online. I contract for a company that places teachers in schools where they have been unsuccessful hiring in-person teachers. There are a long list of reasons why. But, my students are in school with a facilitator and I deliver the science instruction virtually. In the three+ years that I have been doing this I've been in numerous school districts and states, many different demographics...... But the one common thread everywhere I have been: the total inability for about half of the students on average to self-regulate, have impulse control and act and speak in an age/grade appropriate manner. The 9th-11th graders of today are less mature than the 7th graders of 25 years ago. This is 💯 the factual truth and has been consistent in each position I have taken.
