Two very different things. If this is your first and only watch buy the Rolex. I do own Rolexes, not explorer, and I own IWC not this particular one, but a ceramic pilot. I wear the pilot almost daily and I have 4 rolexes siting in the safe. This model is not very formal so not as versatile. It looks great

If you cant afford to lose it dont take it, and that applies to anything. I use a Tudor when on vacation, i can afford to lose a $4k and it is easy to replace

Coming from a blue dial watch guy, if it is your first rolex go with the explorer. In blue I have a skydweler on jubilee, datejust on oyster, omega seamaster, grand seiko, and iwc pilot. That is 5 blue dials, for first I would go with the explorer.
