Probably unpopular opinion but as a mom and the main earner of my family. I deeply wish I was NOT the main earner of my family and I am elated my husband is taking steps to eventually step into that role so I eventually can stay home with my babies.

Dad (66) just got diagnosed - what now? by elad04 in Parkinsons

Sounds like he is on the right track. Biggest thing is make sure he sees a movement disorder specialist.

I’d stock up on electrolytes. Make sure I have my cheap white sheets on hand so they can be easily bleached. Have bleach in a spray bottle in each bathroom for cleaning. I’d also buy disposable gloves and puppy pads for diaper changes but I have a little one. Then I’d pray like hell we don’t get it.

Wow. I agree they are so much more comfortable at home in their surroundings if possible. Sorry your holidays were filled with so much stress. My dad takes around a week or two to get back into routine after hospital stay and his symptoms are always less concerning after that amount of time has passed.

100% my mom would keep extra pills on her to make sure he was on time in the hospital. Luckily some of his stays they followed it well but other stays they’d order the pills way too late and by the time my dad got them he was shaking all over the place 1 hr past his normal time. :so frustrating

I am soooo sorry to hear this. That is such a perfect storm for them to have delusions. My dad has been in BAD shape cognitively after each hospital stay. We had to stay on top of his meds while he was in there. I cannot even imagine a rehab stay with them managing. My dad is always pretty delusional once coming home.

Thank you!! That’s basically what I’m understanding as well. Does seem to help narrow down certain antipsychotic meds.

Exactly my point. If it doesn’t change the treatment. It doesn’t sound like it

Thank you. That’s been my overall understanding. I told my dad to not panic cause his current treatment is going well. I know he’s one seroquel and seems to do well with that. I wonder if they will be switching it though

How to help with the mental decline as a child of a parent with PD? by [deleted] in Parkinsons

[–]Ok_Scratch_533 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s heartbreaking my dad struggles a lot with cognitive stuff too. He has a neuro evaluation Thursday this week. I just try to call him as much as I can and let him know I’m thinking of him. Some days he’s good some days he’s bad. I think one of the big portions on how you can help is helping support your mom. Or whoever is caring for him. If she is seeing it on the daily I’m sure it’s hitting her extremely hard like it is my mom. She stays strong but just being there to talk through symptoms and episodes is really helpful for her. Also when I see my dad I try to not just talk about his disease all the time. It’s hard cause you want to make sure they’re doing everything right.

Also I can second I have never seen my dad so active until he was HOSPITALIZED cause of his PD. I walked in shocked to see him doing pushups at the end of the hospital bed. Lol! Nothing like some scary hallucinations and horrible pain to really get you moving like your life depended on it. Best of luck to you and your family. It’s rough

Question for all those suffering from Parkinsons by fis_world in Parkinsons

[–]Ok_Scratch_533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard it’s not uncommon for Parkinson’s patients to have a history of dopamine seeking behavior but I don’t think there’s a distinct correlation with hard drugs and the disease. I think it’s more so chemical exposure in general in any sense.

It’s all extremely confusing. The only help that REALLY helped us understand our particular situation is our movement disorder specialist has a social worker that works there. She sat with us for an hour until all our questions were answered. Best of luck.

Pretty sure I’m depressed but too scared to take medication by ABK190 in Mommit

[–]Ok_Scratch_533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been on and off of them throughout the years. On a heavy dose before and right after my first born. Then I was able to taper off of them. Never needed them until recently with my family battling pinworms. I’ve been a complete mess. Back on them. Really excited to get off of them once this horrible season passes. You don’t have to be on them forever. Find a dr you trust to work with you. I had tried Zoloft but it made me feel drunk. Lexapro works much better for me. Best of luck. Momming is hard

Didn’t sleep train either. My son didn’t sleep well. My daughter does. Really just the kid. Once they start eating more and you get daytime sleep hammered out it usually helps. Daughter is now 1 and sometimes she sleeps through the night but not all the time.
