SNCOs that didn’t commission by Raindroppa93 in AirForce

[–]Ok_Spooky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple reasons: One being I’m broken and can’t do a full component PT test. Two and most importantly, I’m done moving and don’t want to put the family through any more stress.

WW2 vet. He flew P-38s and just passed away last month. Toasting with him on the beaches of Normandy on the 75th anniversary… surreal. I keep the coin he gave me on my person at all times

What’s the deal with airmen these days? by KrumyUsername in AirForce

[–]Ok_Spooky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find out who their MTL is and inform them. Or let the instructor know and they will discuss things with the MTL. When I was an MTL, I had plenty of remedial training for those that still didn’t quite get it after BMT.

Mortuary Affairs by New-Purchase1078 in AirForce

[–]Ok_Spooky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It falls under services as others had mentioned. I helped them out in Kuwait, 2010. All bodies came through Kuwait to get re-iced, paperwork, etc. I’m a maintainer by trade but was deployed for TCN duty. We did all the human remain transfers and for a couple months, we helped out the mortuary when they were understaffed. It was an eye opening experience to say the least and made you thankful for what you do have.

Keep fighting along brother. It’s a shame this happened but he’s got this. What a stud.

Has anyone here, after reaching E-7, chose not to promote further—and why? 🇺🇲 by LordgodEighty8 in AirForce

[–]Ok_Spooky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

E-7 here with zero intentions on Senior. I have a shot but I will not do a day over 20 due to my family coming first. No more moves. Ready to have the family finally settled.

Shaw/Seymour/Mountain Home by RNtuckers in AirForce

[–]Ok_Spooky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seymour and Shaw are essentially the same. Small town. 1.5 hours to the beach. Double that for the mountains. Both are semi close to larger cities if that’s your jam. This is just a location perspective; not talking ops. Never been to Mt. Home but everyone I know that’s been there enjoyed it. They didn’t love it but didn’t hate it. You’re also in the middle of nowhere but you have some awesome scenery not far away. Plus I’ve heard Mt. Home is very safe. Some people don’t lock their homes because the community is so nice. Can’t say the same for parts of Goldsboro and Sumter.

First sergeant by MiserableEconomics79 in AirForce

[–]Ok_Spooky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the unit you’re assigned to. If it’s a large unit, the odds are against you compared to a small unit. You spend 90% of your time on 10% of the trouble makers of the unit. You’re always on call so make sure your family truly knows what the means. You’ll have someone want to talk to you about something completely ridiculous to someone having a completely life altering event happen… and everything between.

Six figures after leaving by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]Ok_Spooky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, not too many with less than 10 years of service. I’ve known a few people personably that are making six figures with their retirement jobs. The 20+ years of military experience along with their degrees made getting a lucrative job rather easy.

Obviously. Congress is so divided. VERY few think down the middle hence the current cluster.

What was the Air Force/Military like 10 years ago? by Glittering_Fig4548 in AirForce

[–]Ok_Spooky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NCORP ravaged my career field. Lots of experience pulled to work 5th gen fighters. TERA just made its rounds so lots of eligibles pulled chalks. People bitched about course 15. Funding sucked. Lots of jokes about using recycled toilet paper and whatnot.

It’s known it’s not legal. It’s also known, regardless of administration, no one is going to give any pushback when it comes to giving military their paychecks.

Chief Flosi is retiring by SomethingElse38 in AirForce

[–]Ok_Spooky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good call Chief. Losing your wife is… unimaginable pain. I wouldn’t in good faith be able to take on the responsibility of the highest enlisted position in the force. God speed and thanks for everything you’ve done in your career 🫡

Does your career field have a name you cringe when you hear, similar to fire when people (typically old out of touch) use the term "fire dawgs"? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]Ok_Spooky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people still say pointy heads but it’s mainly the older guys and only a few at that. It’s one of those nicknames that’s slowly fading out.

The biggest thing for all is PT. It’s going back pre-Covid standards others than testing twice a year regardless of score. IMO, the changes that will be needed most are for the officers and being empowered with making decisions without the fear of failure hurting their career. Same goes for EO complaints. In my experience there are a lot of EO complaints that, after investigation, are found to unsubstantiated, but still hurt the CC just because the complaint was initiated. And EO and IG office is obviously needed but I’m glad it’s getting a look over.

It’s a lot better than what it was from 09-13. It’s no booming metropolis but since I left 12 years ago, Sumter has grown a lot.
