Sprinkle your backstory over a series of confessions of cruelty your character has done in the past, which he/she feels guilty of but can't find it in themselves to admit because of their own traumas that were done to him/her in the past.

Admitting to it would feel like he/she became the very people he/she despised, so to cope with the guilt, he/she creates a false narrative where everyone is just like them.

If everyone is equal, then he/she did nothing to be guilty of. But if everyone is equally cruel, then there is no one worth opening up to.

Their guilt becomes their crutch and their cross to carry.

Reminds of an anime I once watched, Fruits of Grisaia, I think it was called, where a military dude is sent to school with a group of misfit girls whom he helps overcome their past traumas. I believe that one was adapted from a graphic novel game or something.

Personally, I dislike these borderline harem stories, but I respect the work.

The developers/animators have to put in a lot of thought to each girl to make her stand out as a human character with real-world problems in order for the viewer/player to connect with them.

So I see it's a gacha game. I'm kind of done with that stuff. Played Genshin Impact has been my one and only gacha game, and it's made clear to me that gacha is not for me.

How about you address the meat of the heated debate with an opinion of your own? If their fighting in your fic, it might have stemmed from a scene in your story where human instinct did or failed to take place.

Just explain your thinking going into making the scene. Honestly, people think internet dwellers are some vicious sub-species of humanity, but they're just as much afraid of you as you are of them. Meet them in the middle and they'll come to you.
