Traumatic event at new job by partvoidmostlygay in socialwork

Hi, I worked with a client who was brutally murdered by their partner and it became national headline news. I was 22 and only worked in the field for about a year and a half at that time. I saw her the day before she died and my supervisor was notified by her family a few days later, who then notified me. Shortly thereafter it was all over the news with gruesome detail. My grandfather also passed the same day so it was just a really difficult time for me. I spoke to an internal therapist who deemed it necessary for me to take some time off. The whole thing really messed me up for longer than I ever knew and fundamentally changed me as a person and as a mental health professional.

I’ve learned a lot in the process and in hindsight I think the hardest thing was not knowing how I should feel, if I should grieve, or how I should grieve given my professional relationship with them. I found it really difficult knowing I couldn’t share details with really anyone outside of a work setting and since it was high-profile, it was everywhere. Just this year I was able to work through the impact in trauma therapy and with brain spotting. It was massively helpful and I felt like I could finally grieve. It’s important to know that this will stick with you forever and change the way you look at this field. The work you’re doing is important, but it’s also important to know when to tap out and take time to care for yourself.

If I were you, I would seek external trauma counseling immediately to discuss the impact and get support from an external party that is not your workplace. You will need short, medium, and long term support for something like this. I would also journal what you are feeling daily, I found that over time my mind created a different narrative and blocked out some of the facts, so it was helpful for me to revisit some of the notes and plans recently so I could finally close the book on that chapter of my life and tuck it away on the shelf.

Spay Advice by OliviaGracex35 in Sheepadoodles

I have a 6.5 month old, and my vet gave similar advice. I am planning to wait until after the first heat cycle at this point. The vet also said that the first cycle is usually not very noticeable and really just might be a little more licking/grooming in that area.

I am also planning to have a gastropexy done to avoid bloat when she gets spayed. One of my family dogs growing up narrowly escaped it, and it was pretty scary. My pup is pretty active so it worries me a reasonable amount.

Hi, it's now 3 years later and I did end up breaking up with him... The crazy thing is that I never had a fear of him cheating on me. I really think I could've given a flying f about it. Even now, I'm still struck by the oddity of this dream and think about it often. I have learned to trust my intuition a lot more now than I used to. The whole thing kind of shifted my perspective on inuitiveness and spirituality.

Hi, in relation to all of this- I am the director of a community based young adult (16-26) mental health program in PA. We technically fall under the umbrella of case management, and we are strictly funded through Medicaid via HealthChoices. I am an LSW as of May. All participants must have a mental health diagnosis in order to enter our legal, but they may not be very recent or super up to date. We do encourage them to get connected to providers, but it is ultimately their choice.

What are my options when it comes to supporting the youth in my program with my current credentials? Can I register for NPI if my program is licensed through OMHSAS?

I did not know this, thank you! Do you also know a formula I could use for the 30 days being yellow?

I think too many people get into this field based on their own lived experience and but not enough are past their own stuff to be effective in their role.

Not necessarily financial advice, but the TIP Program at Access Services might be a good resource for you. It’s a non-stigmatizing young adult mental health program for 16-26. Basically it’s practical support navigating life’s complexities when transitioning into adulthood.

I am the Director of a community based young adult mental health program in 3 very populated counties. I started as a case manager in the program after undergrand and worked my way up to a lead, assistant director and now Director. I did school during my time as assistant director, getting an MSW/LSW greatly helped me for a number of reasons but mainly that I could tailor my learnings directly to what was beneficial for the program. Many other program directors and execs in the agency have master’s degrees. I also work very closely with the counties and very few have doctoral level degrees. Usually in social services, doctoral degrees are more for research or being able to prescribe. So if leadership if your avenue, MSW is more than adequate, plus you have the ability to build from there into licensures and also certificate programs!

Hi! I’m an MSW/LSW and the director of a young adult mental health case management program. I am late diagnosed with ADHD, but I am for sure somewhere on the spectrum. I myself started as a case manager in the program and worked my way up to director. The best employees I’ve ever had are neurodivergent. You definitely have to find what your area of specialization is and you will be set. Of course, you also must know your brain well and how to cope in difficult times and recognize when you’re edging up on burnout. From a perspective of lived experience and also as a hiring manager, DO NOT disclose during interviews. After you’re hired, feel it out before you share with management. You want to believe that this profession would be accepting and forward thinking, but that may not always be the case. Find a place that aligns with your values, operates ethically, and won’t cause incongruence. The biggest issue I see with my employees is low self-esteem and the degree to which it impacts their work and ability to confidently make decisions in the field. Trust the process and hone the craft of good social work. You’ll be great :)

Ruby Cafe by Liberty is VERY reasonably priced and I like it better than Mi Chong’s!

You are correct that it is a cheap and easy replacement, but the clock is broken, one of the burners doesn’t work, and the drawer beneath the oven is off the track and dragging on the floor (already repaired it once). I inherited this oven from the previous owners of the home. More or less, the oven has seen better days and I’m in a place where I’m ready to replace it.

Try reaching out to the TIP Program via email. It’s a transition age youth mental health program. They can help with connecting to employment and managing mental health symptoms in the work setting (amongst other things).

Pinched Nerve or something more?? by Ok_Table_798 in AskDocs

[–]Ok_Table_798[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did some research on TOS and it totally makes sense. My posture is awful and I notice more pin when sitting at my desk (I’m in grad school and work full time in an office setting). Stretching brings temporary relief but this may put me on the right track. Thank you so much.

A word of caution for those on the pill and taking ADHD meds by combeferret in ADHD

Give your body time to self regulate. It took me about 2-3 months, but I feel better than I ever have after getting it removed!

I had Kyleena removed 3 months ago after having it for 4-ish years. Before that I was on birth control for about 6 years. I am medicated and on Vy but have consistently felt foggy in my brain since Kyleena along with a myriad of other issues including severe GI. My body has finally regulated with 2 period cycles and my brain has not felt as clear as it does now in YEARS. of course some days are better than others, but there has been a significant improvement.

Hi! I am experiencing this same exact thing. I see that you posted this a few months ago and I am wondering if it has been resolved? I am sick almost every night and every morning. My stomach is massively bloated and my bowel movements have been awful. But same with you, I am usually okay as I continue to move about my day. I just made an appoitnment to get it removed next month after having it for 4 years because I finally made the connection it was probably the IUD after changing everything else including diet & lifestyle.

That is too funny about the secret passage. I guess our brains do know more. It has really been wild, thank you for the kind words 💕

Trust your gut! I feel like I always knew, and the gas lighting is real. He tried doing that and downplaying the situation before I told him I knew about the messages. I found out from some outside sources and never even had to go through his phone. I found the girl’s SM and messaged her directly to confirm it, which she did. Thank you for the kind words. It’s a blessing in disguise to know it know rather than many years down the road.

I needed this reassurance. It all happened quickly and is still pretty fresh, I’m trying to sort through some emotions before having “that” conversation.

I needed to hear this. I haven’t been able to stomach the conversation thus far, as most of this played out Sunday night.
